I just found out today, that .. my work hours have been cut from 27 a week to 9. Why? Because my manager thinks that having morning people is more important. So, he hires 2 people. When that happens, you actually give them hours and NOT CUT other worker’s hours.
He said the reason of me being cut is: I have unstable hours.
He said he “ wanted me to work at noon “ when I began, but I couldn’t, so I COMPROMISED for 1 pm instead! I had to cut 3 HOURS and come in at 2 pm instead BECAUSE OF SCHOOL. I have NEVER taken unnecessary days off. I have always arrived at work everyday on time and busted my ass, doing what is expected of me.
I’ve been at this place for 4 YEARS. “Seniority doesn’t matter,” the manager says. Really? JUST REALLY? Then what have I been doing for the past 4 hours?
He said he managed to keep my salary, which is considered ‘full time.’ That isn’t good enough. I would rather work minimum wage and have 27 hours a week.
I’m pissed off, angry and in a really terrible mood. I am applying at places right now. I have references at Target, which is at the mall that I work at. I’m going to apply at some places in the mall tomorrow.
I just found out that I have to pay for my books for school out of my POCKET in January. No, 9 hours a week isn’t going to cut it. IT ISNT. IT ISNT ACCEPTABLE.
My dad is supporting me, while I am responsible for payiing my phone bill and taking care of Chacha. I hope this damn house SELLS. My uncle screwed up a good deal a few months back . My dad isn’t too happy with my manager right now. In fact, he is PISSED.
Dad is off tomorrow and he is going to pick up some applications while I am at work.
The first thought that came into my head was.. “Am I going to have to rehome Chacha?” I won’t.
I have a few questions for you guys.. I do not have my Social Security card (I do but it is in the garage someplace and there is a lot of stuff in there) but I have a birth certificate. Do jobs accept this as an alternative to an SS card?
I am so upset right now…
Like I said on FB, that totally sucks and doesn’t seem fair at all!
I’m not sure if you need your SS card for all jobs or not but I know mine said to bring it in when I come in next week. I’d get a replacement card (which is free) if you could. I found this online if you need to get one: http://www.ehow.com/how_5159648_order-replacement-social-security-card.html
It’s great that your dad is so supportive! Good luck and I hope you find something soon! I know the feeling
Ooo! Thank you
I am going to find a job in 2 weeks.. I know it. I feel deceiving to the future job that I get though… I can’t tell them that I’ll be going to school or else.. they won’t hire me
Work study isn’t really an option at my school :-/
I have a feeling it is going to be a long night
I just made a profile on snagajob, thank you
Oh hon, I’m so sorry. That’s beyond the pits… that is ludicrous. What a ridiculous manager! How does it make any sense to rehire people who have no idea what they’re doing when you have someone as experienced as you are who actually wants the hours! He is going to regret it when you leave and he’s left with a bunch of new hires who are totally lost.
The main thing is that Chacha is safe and you have a loving parent who is going to help you. It sounds like he understands what a difficult situation you’re in, and that it isn’t your fault.
Get a profile on Monster too. That’s how I found my job in post-Katrina New Orleans, when everything was a mess. I was very grateful.
I bet your next job will be even better than this one!
Thanks Lizzie.
The only thing is, I think they do want to get rid of me. They just hire people of the stores ethnicity (Where the store is from originally). I guess I was never good enough for them.
It sickens me that there are people like this. What happened makes no sense whatsoever. I don’t even think that they will regret it because they do not really care about their employees.
The manager won’t even acknowledge the non-Japanese speakers when he is there. It is sad. Beyond sad that people act like this.
My first thought – time to find a new job. But i see you are already doing that. lol
I’m sorry you have such a sucky job. I worked retail off and on for about 10 years and it truly sucks. Always having to fight for hours and stuff. I’m sure something better will come along! Good luck!
I have applied for 6 retail places already. Phew. i’m not tired though.. I think my body is on adrenaline O_o ;;
I may have to put school off for a while.. which makes me sad.
Yes, is quite ridiculous. Especially if he refuses to acknowledge the non Japanese workers. And if he only hires a certain ethnicity, I do believe that is against the law
Yes.
There are Asian marts in the area that hire Asian only cashiers and their stockers are Mexican.. o.o;;
I told my dad I should quit and collect unemployment (which I doubt I’ll get). I think my manager doesn’t want me to quit so I can’t get unemployment (the company is cheap). I actually do know a lot about Japanese products since working there, however I do not think it is enough. I have grown tired of the ugly treatment I have received there. “Can I please speak to a Japanese?” in not a nice tone. Some people won’t even talk to me because I don’t speak it…
I hope I get something – I would love to work at Borders. I’d definitely be stuck in the backroom all day looking for books
im sorry you have to go through this.some people think they can do whatever they want since they have a higher position.there’s a thing called “respect and appreciation!” geeezz.theres so much pricks around now.
my friend got fired recently and she got them for unemployment and she actually gets more now than when she was working.LOL.
youre better off lookin for a better job that will appreciate you.
I’ve applied at many places and the guy at Gamestop in the mall drilled me on the spot I think that I did well. He was the assistant manager. He said he would give the application straight to the manager
I’m watching “Undercover Boss.” Lol.
I hope you can find a new place to work Britt, this really isn’t good at all. You are way better than having to deal with that!!!
Gamestop!!! If you get it, be prepared to do a midnight shift on Dec.6th/7th
Release date for the WoW expansion is Dec 7… 12am
I think it would be fun to work at Gamestop!! Although yeah… there are some big names coming out soon. Woo!
Brittany, I’m so sorry you’re going through this, and it doesn’t help to know that others of us have had similar unfair treatment in the past as well. I actually found myself totally freaking with anxiety for weeks before a review this past week because I had been treated so badly by a former employer that it left me reacting like an abused dog with the thought of going through something like that again. I am a terrific employee and she just couldn’t understand my being so scared. I finally realized the meaning of “emotional damages” that people sue for. I have been scarred. P.S. My review went really well, and I am unbelievably relieved.
So why tell you this now? Because my job hunt after that awful experience helped me find this current work place, and I settled for a part time job on the weekends for a wage I hadn’t made in over ten years (that low.) But it was a great place, my new boss and I were like long lost friends who really needed each other and made it work, did some fantastic work together from the start, got me hired on Full time as soon as they could budget me in, got me a salary back at the level I had left, and it’s now my 3rd year there and I had a terrific review!
You don’t need this employer. They’re skating on thin ice because they ARE breaking the discrimination laws, and they are betting you won’t bother to hurt yourself by doing anything about it. Maybe they’re right, but you are experienced, trained, and willing to work the hours you are available. Fill out those applications, hug your bunny and your Dad, and move on.
Btw, don’t rule out small independent stores. I know the current employer makes them seem like poison, but a small place can sometimes be better pay, more flexible hours, and appreciate you more, not less. Pick a store or business that has a need that you are qualified to fill, and then tell them how much you will help their business in these hard times. Do your best negotiating up front, be clear (don’t say yes to everything, let them know exactly what hours you’re available, and your bottom line for wages) and emphasize your punctuality, attention to detail, and willingness to learn their business and make each customer or client count. Write a thank you note after each live interview. You’ll stand out as the one to hire. We’re going into the holidays, so if you take holiday help, be sure you know that. Try to find a place that wants to keep you after they are over if you can.
Thank you RabbitPam
Well, at the suggestion of my coworker, she said to look at the workplace handbook. It says: The manager cannot change your shift without notifying you beforehand.
AHEM, COUGH. They didn’t, I found out via a coworker, and even if I did not, I would have seen it when I came into work on Sunday anyways!!
I am going to call the Unemployment office tomorrow or Friday (Thursday is Veterans Day) to ask questions about my employer. If I have enough complaint, a very valid argument (which I believe I do), I am going to either: get partial unemployment, or quit and apply for unemployment. People have said that if you quit, you can’t get unemployment. All cases are different and handled differently. I have a valid point and many complaints against my manager that I solely believe that I take this into my control.
I am still looking for jobs, but the Unemployment is what I am seeking. I cannot tolerate to be at this job and I just feel like walking off of the job. I will be attending school next year and my education is more important than working. If I can get the unemployment, i can focus on my studies (I am going to school to become a medical assistant, so I will need ALL THE TIME to study as I can, and spend time with Chacha) and do what I enjoy without worrying about a lot.
I have spoken to my dad about this and he supports me. He just wants to make sure I can get unemployment. A reason why I am still working and sticking it out is to support my Chacha bun. I love her more than the world its self
Thank you everyone
Good-fight them!! I’m so proud of such a strong backbone *hugs*
And keep applying. As someone who is hiring right now I can tell you it’s more about timing then what’s on your resume. I mean here it’s different, we hire a ton, and spelling mistakes mean nothing we just need (inside joke) someone who’s breathing and warm! But in all my experience, it’s timing (when they need someone) as opposed to whats on your resume. And call after to thank them for looking at your resume (this makes HR find the darn resume they lost!!!)-totally normal and called for! Good luck!
Thanks
Well, I got home today and .. I got 2 messages!
You’re going to tell us more than that, right?
Hahhaa Okay okay okay!!
Well, I THOUGHT my gym had called because I had submitted my resume online, but when I called back this morning, it was regarding my account! GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! Oh well.
Aeropostale, a clothing store in the mall called me back and asked for an interview tomorrow I called back to set up a time, but the lady that does interviewing wasn’t there at the moment.. so I left my name and number!!!
I am going to be honest with Aero and let them know, I am open for working this holiday season, but after that, I will be attending school. It is up to them if they want to keep me. I am going to do my best to rock this interview and hope that they will keep me after the holidays. I hope I can get part time, a few days a week, one weekend day. I don’t mind weekends, but I do want a Saturday or Sunday off.
I like how I may be working in the mall still. The mall always closes at 9, which leaves me time to go home, fix Chacha her salad and do homework/relax with her.
Also, a fellow coworker that got her hours cut (not as much as mine did) applied for Winco, a grocery store and got an interview! They already called her back for a second interview! I think her and I will be getting out of our current job around the same time! This may sound mean but, karma is haunting my manager. He hires 2 people and expects the people with their hours cut to train them… well, there won’t be people to train them once my coworker and I leave
There is this coffee newspaper I read when I was eating dinner on Tuesday. It is a paper with random facts and a weekly horoscope. Gemini said: “It is your time. Through gentle persuasian you will gain something.”
Two, because you are a Gemini.
I like the karma, too.
Is rabbitpam a gemini as well?
I have already set aside my clothes for the interview.
My coworker gets off around the time of my interview, so we are going to meet up (we both work in the same mall, same place) afterward and talk about the interviews and such!
Chacha knew everything is going to be okay!
I like the mall idea too! It’s nice to know you’ll be able to go home before it’s too late. I don’t want my girl to do anything dangerous!
<3
Haha thanks!
I am looking into Starbucks. They are looking for help asap. There are 4 in my city and one that is isn’t so far from my house. I’m still looking for something permanent, not just temporary.
My dad works next to a Safeway and he goes in there a lot. There is a Starbucks in there and he talks to the baristas a lot. It would be nice to work so closely next to my dad, lol.
The store location wasn’t on the application site so my dad and I are going there Saturday. But I did apply online for other locations.
Not a Gemini.
Very much a Scorpio. In fact, my birthday is this Sunday.
Typical of Scorpio to say it, but hide the fact in the middle of an unrelated thread. lol
Yay for November babies
MB, are you one too?
Yep. Nov 25
See my new thread. Computer is losing battery. Must go now.
