Hi All, I’ve recently adopted two flemish x lop earred buns. They are currently free range inside during the day when we’re home and overnight or if I’m out (which isn’t often during the day, I’m a stay at home mum) they’re in the outdoor hutch they came with which I feel is too small at 4′ by 3′ with an attached run of an extra 5′. They’re very well behaved boys, perfectly litter trained and so far haven’t gotten into any mischief inside. I am wanting to get them an x-pen so I can keep them inside overnight, and am just wondering how tall I would need to go to make sure they can’t get out. Would a 4′ by 4′ pen that’s also 4′ high be suitable for overnight? During the day they will continue to have free reign of the kitchen and living/dining area

Welcome! ! Thats a lovely thing to do. Well done you!

You don’t mention their ages or if they are neuteured. If they are still young and agile and jumpers, 4ft may not be high enough. And they certainly have strength in their jaws so the xpen needs to be fixed rather than ‘free standing’ or they will be pulling and pushing at it through the bars (I speak from experience!).

Of course if they are seriously chilled out buns and are happy staying put (mwah ha haaaa) then it should be OK.

          Any pics ?

My boys are 3 years old and both neutered. Fairly cruisey so far, they don’t even jump up onto the couch!! My mum picked this up for us this morning, so far the boys seem to like it, and it should be alright for overnight and maybe a couple hours during the day here and there, yeah? It seems ridiculously high! But I’d rather be safe than sorry haha

Yup I think that should be high enough !!!
But joking aside, it’s best to have one that is too high than one they can jump over = waste of money !! lol

The thing mine would do is grab the bars between teeth and push and pull really hard…. it’s quite impressive the force they have in their teeth… and the nice right angle corners would be non existant and the whole thing would be pushed over (or they’d lift it and go under !! Ohhhh yes… they have already !!)!!

The way I prevent this is to weigh it down by brick weights on the outside, held to the bottom rail of the xpen by cable ties….

But you’ll see what mischief (if any) they get up to tonight… might be worth leaving a door open so you can hear if there’s any attempts of escape
