› Forum › THE LOUNGE › Names For Pet Fish: Vote
Okay, so I am getting 2 fancy goldfish within the next week or two. These are the breeds I am interested in. (DISCLAIMER, I DON’T OWN THE PICS. ALL RIGHTS AND CREDIT GOES TO THE RIGHTFUL OWNERS)
An orange version of the above fish
Anyway, here are some name suggestions. Please vote on two, and if you have another name, feel free to suggest.
I’m not a big fan of food names or joking names like “bait”.
I’m still going to get a Nessie one way or another! LOL
*Note* Must me signed in or it doesn’t let you vote.
I vote for Nessie! LOL
I like squishy and moo moo.
I think I might be leaning towards Smidge and Zookie. I’m super excited though, a lot of time, care and money is going into this and I’m hoping it all goes well. I’m scared I might kill them. =/
I think I like Smidge abd Zookie!
I used to have pet fish and name them, I used to have one that was blind and one of the other fish used to push him up to the surface at dinnertime, the blind fish was called Popeye, because he had big eye sockets with skin over them, I had another fish called Jaws, Jaws because if I put any fish in his tank he would eat then.
I’m anxiously waiting for Thursday to set my tank up so it can cycle and I can get my fish!
Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesie!!!!!
Brigid?
LOL Bam!
LMAO bam !!!!! LOL Or “Calypso” !!
My two were called Cagney & Lacey
Smidge and Smudge !
Zookie (Suki) and Yaki =)
So I got the tank set up today. I’m getting my fish Monday.
So looking forward to pix, Moxie!
Yes, definitely Bam!
My little sister’s birthday was today (Jan. 1st) and she got a new 10 gallon tank because she was kinda jealous I got one. She’s just gonna get 1 Betta fish. I’ll post a pic of her tank too.
So I have Pellets, Flakes and dried baby fresh water shrimp for my gold fish to eat.
LOL – Moxie, I thought you had decided to call them “Pellets” and “Flakes” !!
LOL!
So my Alkalinity is low and my PH is high, and my little sister’s tank’s water’s Alkalinity is so high the color wasn’t on the chart and the PH is high. My mom is going to buy a PH adjuster. Any other suggestions?
Would removing some of my tank water (tap water) and add some distilled water (from the store) help lower my PH levels?
Off to pick out the fish!
Have you used water conditioner? (to get rid of the chlorine)
Yes. I also bought some “PH perfector”. It did fix my sister and I’s PH issue, but it made our water cloudy (like somebody put some drops of milk in it so it was a bit cloudy white, although it was not bad). I don’t think I’ll use them again though. Also, I noticed as I was putting my fish in it there was a funky smell to my water like fish had already been living in it. Although it was kinda too late to turn back. The fish seem to be doing good, today is their second day.
Also the pellets I bought are too big for them and since they are goldfish (bottom swimmers) they won’t swim to the top to eat flakes. Any advice on how to crush pellets? My black moor is probably only an inch (not including tail) and my fantail is probably about the same length but fatter, taller and a bigger tail (and mouth lol)
What did you go with? I like smidge and zookie! Also, steer clear of the pH adjustment chemicals. The fish are most likely use to your city water. The chemicals will cause fluctuations and you have to get it JUST RIGHT at each water change. A stable ph is more important than anything. If you drip acclimated them they will be fine in whatever ph your water naturally is. It’s a stressful thing playing messing with your ph. It’s not just about the chemicals. Your water hardness plays a big role in ph. If you have hard water your ph will constantly slowly rise back up even with the chemicals. If your water is rwally soft then it will be easier to get the pH right but it can still fluctuate quite a bit. Best thing is to just leave it be. Most fish these days are captive bred. So the pH is really just best left alone. How are your new fishes doing? Any pics! I have a pet fish myself! I used to have a high tech planted setup with nano fish and shrimp and such but broke it down after the baby came because it was a lot of work. Plan to bring it back though. Now I just keep my betta named Bilbo lol and a nano tank with a few shrimp lol
My fish are seemingly doing pretty well. I haven’t quite decided on a name for them, I was waiting to see if they lived. I think the little guy (black moor) looks like a Smidge, but also a Zookie! My big guy (Fan tail) doesn’t look like either of those options, so I’m thinking Squiggles. Although I REALLY like Zookie, I think Smidge and Squiggles sounds cute together.
I’m trying to get some pics up, but my camera has been broken since April, and now it’s not working. I’m hoping it just needs new batteries. I have a ton of pics on my phone but they won’t upload onto the computer. Uhg! =/
So a little funny story:
When I was picking out the fish, I didn’t really get a chance to observe them too much because the worker was kinda rushing me. I mean she came over with a bag and net and took the lid off the tank and asked me which ones I wanted. Well my black moor was the first to catch my eye because he is SO tiny and was all lively swimming about (all the others were in the corner on the ground. They were most likely eating a dead fish… ). I asked the lady if they had issues with the size differences, and she said no. None of the other fish had ever tried to pick on him. I thought “Okay” and I picked him. I then picked out my Fantail. Keep in mind he’s 2-3 times bigger than my moor. Well the lady put them in the same bag (She did it so quickly I couldn’t ask for them to be “packaged” seperately. Because we did drive 2 hours and goldfish are messy, so I was thinking about oxygen and ammonia build up).
ANYWAY, short story long, the itsy bitsy black moor with poor eyesight (because that breed has bubble eyes) was bullying and picking on my fantail who’s much bigger than him the whole ride home! And I had been concerned about that “innocent” looking fish being bullied, LOL!
Although now that they are in their tank they’re perfectly fine together.
I think I’m gonna make a thread with all the pics I’ve promised to post and haven’t yet. I have my fish, my hat made of Moxie’s angora wool, the puppies we rescued who aren’t quite puppies anymore…
I am apologizing in advance for the TERRIBLE picture quality! But do you know how hard it is to take a picture of a tiny, moving fish at night with a broken camera? It’s pretty hard!
Smidge, the black moor on the left. Squiggles, the fantail on the right (he has beautiful white markings).
Squiggles looks so big compared to Smidge in this photo below!
(Smidge is actually closer than Squiggles, giving the illusion that he is bigger in the below photo)
(
Squiggles is in the top left corner, Smidge is in the bottom right corner. I forgot to buy a back drop pic for my tank when I was getting my fish so I have to order it online. =/ but this gives the general idea. Sorry the LED lights are so bright on the pic!
I would agree with newbunny123 on leaving the ph. It is indeed dificult to keep every attribute of the water the same every day. My water temps vary from 72-90, because the water heaters are as effective as the ambient room temperature. In winter I keep my house at 64 over night an 68 while I am awake. The fish tank with the heater on high – is at 72. During summer, I keep the house at 75. I have to turn the heater off or the water will be 90. So as summer gets warmer, I dial down the heater. During spring and fall when we have cool nights and warm days, the temps vary between low and high in the fish tank. I haven’t even tried to maintain ph, alkalinity, etc. Not even nitrites.nitrates. I honestly am at the point where I only check amonia. I can’t control the tap water, and I don’t like the idea of adding chemicals and mitigating here and there.
NESSIE!!!!!!
Hehehehehehehe!
I love your fantail! He’s so pretty! Luckily goldfish are cold water fish. Heaters aren’t necessary and be prepared to upgrade that tank. They get big! I love goldfish they’re one of my favorite fish! I love the diversity of them and they have such cute personalities lol
NBO— I definitely plan on upgrading my tank when they get bigger, don’t worry!
Here’s my fish during the ride home: (the bag was tilted slightly so it looks like there isn’t a lot of water in the bag)
Bubbles, my sister’s double-tailed male betta fish and her tank for Bubbles:
There, I was able to get some picks off my phone by emailing them to myself, and then go on the computer and download them off my email onto the computer.
They both look lovely together…. you ‘could’ say….
wait for it….
“that they get along together swimmingly” ……. ha ha ha ha ha ha !!! Sorry, couldn’t resist !!
Ha ha ha ha
So pretty! I used to have goldfish back in the day. Just a few, in a small tank. They are very practical: cold water fish, don’t require special food like live larvae and stuff, and they are so beautiful.
They grow with the size of the tank I think. But I’m certainly not sure! I just had mine because they were so stunningly beautiful to look at.
Bam it’s a misconception they grow with the size of the tank. Their outer appearance may get stunted but they aren’t healthy and won’t live a full life because their organs will still grow. It’s a common misconception that they grow to the size of the tank. They may get stunted, which isn’t really a good thing lol
Technically, they have indeterminate growth. In other words, their ultimate size is not dictated by genetics. They do not grow to the size of their tanks, but continue to grow throughout their lifetimes. Many fish, including carp (e.g. goldfish), can grow to be quite large when there is an abundance of resources. When kept in poor conditions, their growth can become stunted as NBO said.
I had no clue their organs will still grow even if the fish can’t. That’s so sad =(
It is. =( That’s why many people say the minimum for fancy goldfish is 20 gallons per fish (Considering they can be 8 inches long not including tail). Since mine are still very little I’m keeping them in a 20 gallon together although I plan on upgrading.
Smidge isn’t acting right and it’s really scaring me and causing me anxiety. I think he might die. I was looking on a website (because I noticed he was not acting right) and was looking at symptoms for a sick fish and he fits 3 of the symptoms. 1) Red streaks. Yesterday I noticed he had a red streak under his chin (although I didn’t think much of it) 2) Staying by the top/sides of the tank (he’s just kinda floating upright at the top, swimming a little bit) 3) Loss of appetite.
I don’t think this has anything to do with my care/water. I think it was the place I bought them. I did notice there was dead fish in multiple of their tanks and a possible dead one in their tank. I tried my best and I really liked smidge and squiggles. I don’t know what to do, and the tank is like a foot away from my bed so I can’t help glancing over. I got the fish to help relieve anxiety and right now it’s causing quite a bit.
Any fish I get again is NOT going to be from them! >:^[
It’s nearly midnight so there’s nothing we can do tonight. If Smidge is still alive tomorrow we’re going to go to the store and see what they have for meds. I think he has Septicemia caused by stress? That’s just my best guess considering his symptoms…
Most of the time fish dont thrive because of water conditions. Before diagnosing and medicating your tank, have you tested your water yet? are all the levels alright? This means pH, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia. Also make sure you are using a liquid/dropper testing kit and not the ones with paper strips. The paper strips are not accurate.
Most importantly did you wait a few weeks for your water to cycle before putting your fish in? Many people don’t realize how important this is. When I did this it made a world of difference. You can still cycle while you have fish in the tank, but you risk your fish dying. Here is a website about the aquarium nitrogen cycle: http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm
And here the article on how to cycle: http://www.fishlore.com/nitrogen-cycle-page2.htm
If you didn’t cycle read up on what it means and how to do it, it’s very important.
If you have cycled then ignore all that lol.
If you are using tap water be sure to condition your water before using it. Pet stores usually sell them.
Your tank looks rather small, how many gallons is it? For two goldfish a 40 gallon tank is a good idea, you may be able to get away with 30 gallons. Larger tanks are MUCH easier to maintain and keep water quality balanced, trust me I learned this the hard way.
Make sure you have lots of filtration (goldfish make A LOT of waste), heating, etc. Check your water quality/chemical levels regularly. Plus goldfish get super big, so a bigger thank is better. A smaller tank will shorten their surprisingly long life-span.
I cycled my tank for nearly a week. I Have tested it a bunch and conditioned it.
My tank is 20 gallons. My fish are like an inch/inch and a half long (not including tail). I was planning to upgrade the tank size in April (A few months).
I also had bought some bacteria stuff for the tank so apparently you don’t need to cycle the tank. And I cycled it for 5 days.
Poor Smidge didn’t make it. I bought some aquarium salt that is supposed to apparently calm and help heal fish. Haven’t used it yet, but wanted to know if maybe anybody knows about it?
Smidge was very tiny, so I wonder if he had a weaker immune system? I’m just REALLY scared now for Squiggles. I don’t want to give up on fishkeeping though.
I think squiggles would be a good name for a goldfish because they are. Very active
Thanks.
Although still upset (RIP Smidge), I think this really motivates me to learn even more. I’ve decided to buy “Repashy Soilent Green Gel Food” instead. It’s a tad pricey and I have to order it online, but there’s a lot of great reviews and it’s recommended by several goldfish breeders (Solid Gold and Dandy Orandas). So I’m going to give it a go.
You’re feeding your fish people?!
Oh wait, that’s Soylent Green.
Lol, what’s Soylent green? I saw a comment that said “This is made from people” and gave it a one star review and I just thought it was some troll. Please explain because I’m too lazy to search.
It’s a movie from the 70s. It’s the future and the Earth is overpopulated with people. Real food is very expensive, only the rich can afford it. So they have these processed rations for people to live off of called Soylent. There are different colors and the green, it turns out, is made from the bodies of people who have died. The main character discovers this at the end of the movie and he yells “Soylent Green is people!” as he’s being dragged away.
Sorry, bad joke. Anyway, I’m sorry about Smidge. Poor thing. I don’t think it was anything you did.
Keep an eye on those ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. One week is short for cycling, so it’s possible your tank isn’t done yet.
No products will allow you to avoid cycling completely, but adding bacteria from an old/established tank or bacteria product can help shorten the cycling period.
What filter are you using and what heater (unless your room temp is ok)?
I have heard of aquarium salt being used on sick fish.
I use a tetra whisper internal filter (not sure the exact model)…No heater (the water normally stays around 70-72).
For a 20 gallon tank try to get a filter that runs at 200 gallons per hour at least, more filtration doesn’t hurt. Like instead of using filters “for up to 20 gallons,” the filter “for up to 30 gallons” might be better. Marineland is a good and popular brand
If you can figure out what model your filter is you can probably find out the filtration rate on google.
sounds like your temps are good though.
If you want to learn more about fish keeping I recommend joining a fish forum (i use fishlore.com) and asking about your tank set-up there. It’s what I did when I was planning my freshwater tank. I got a lot of information, people there recommended me filters, heaters, plants, lighting, etc after telling them what I wanted to do.
I signed up for that fishlore site. I’ve been able to get some information off of there, members are pretty quick in responding/giving input.
Red streaks is internal bleeding from amonia levels.
Vanessa– Could it be possible that he already had internal bleeding (considering he was in a 5 gallon tank with like 10 other fish. It was PACKED), since my ammonia readings were fine? I noticed the red streaks after I’d had him for 4 days, but it’s very possible I could have missed it.
