› Forum › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › George is at the vet (edit liver failure) (edit look like a ulcer)
What a day? George had been having GI issues, soft cecals, so he been on an all hay diet, and he had shown improvement. I started to giving him bene-bac on a oxbow barley treat (only way he will take it). Anyway when I left this morning he was has happy eating hay. By the time I got home at 1pm he was show sign of stasis, so I took him to the vet. The vet did not think there was gas so I took him home. Finally after giving him critical care and him not improving. I tool him back, the emergency vet noticed he was really dehydrated. So she recommend he stay overnight. Lucky she did not think it was a blockage, bu his gut is not moving.
Gracie is also upset as well going to the vet twice and her friend is stuck at vet
Poor George. Did the vet do x-rays?
Yes the vet was going to do x-rays. I want to make sure there was no blockage. I did get a chance to see them, but the vet said they would start some mobility meds if she did not see any blockage.
George is doing better, no blockage. His gut is not moving so he is not pooping.
They are also trying some ulcer medicine, since this is the second time this year he has had this.
I know how awful it is when an animal is at the vets, I must be the worst person, I’m on my mobile to the vets soon as I’m out the door or at the bus stop asking how the animal is, George is at the vets and having a holiday, he’ll be fine, but hope his medicine works soon.
I am kind of okay with it. He has been in an out of the vets for an Upper respiratory infection last year. I know they have better facilities to handle him.
The strange thing is is that the vets are not even sure what caused it. I took him twice yesterday, the on site exotic vet did not think it gas or anything. Since his stomach felt nice and he just produced cecals. Anyway the second time I took him, they suggested leaving him there.
I feel kind of sad for Gracie, she seems a down, but she would not be able to be with because they would need to monitor him.
Anyway as the vet said no news is good news. Just be patient and hope for some poops.
George is temperature is up but his guts just not moving. He is going to have a blood test done so hopefully that will shed some light on what is going on.
It looks like he has liver disease and is anemic, his red blood count was extremely low.
They are starting on liver medication and a iron supplement.
Any healing vibes would be great.
{{{{{George}}}}}
Oh no, I suppose that would explain why he wasn’t eating or pooping normal poops. Poor little guy, I hope the medication helps. Did the vet give any clue as to why this would happen? How old is George?
Oh no. Best place for him right now. Keep us posted… I will send healing Vibes…
(((George)))
George is only 1.5 years old. Really it could be any number of things. Lymphoma, liver disease, a torsion, however after reviewing the symptoms which are not many. They are leaning towards Hepatic coccidiosis.
His symptoms: were initially last Tuesday either larger cecal/mushy cecals. Also drinking a lot of water, but it had been warmer and he had been eating more hay. I thought it might be stasis, but him on a all hay diet. I previously noticed soft feces not many but he occasionally gets them, and sometimes a bad odor when he pooped, but again generally not too unusual. He was eating a ton but, up until yesterday morning, then he would not eat his cecals or treats. No gas gut will not move and he was sleepy no real pain just really sleepy. As quick as it was, I would be almost tempted to say a torsion, since his weight is good, but as the vet said he is in no pain.
I remembered feces and smell after the vet called with his blood work. Those two things in particular are making them think it is Hepatic coccidiosis.
I hope that this helps someone who has a similar issue.
The good news is we know why his gut is not moving, the bad new is he is in pretty rough shape with his blood count.
Oh dear, I suppose his symptoms would be somewhat consistent with that. Could the vet see anything in the x-rays?
There is some info on MediRabbit, if that helps at all: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_diseases/Protozoal_diseases/Cocc_en.htm
You might want to ask the vet about treating your other rabbit as a precaution.
George is doing a little better this morning, showing some attitude, moving his hay around. Moreover his stomach seems to be moving a little better.
The vet seems as confused as me, she is not sure what is really going on. She still has not ruled out ulcers. He seems to have some chronic bleeding going on.
She will consult with his usual vet today, and get some info and his history.
Still could use some healing vibes!!

(((Vibes)))
Porky had a liver infection a few months ago. He came through it with antibiotics, NSAIDs, motility meds, and critical care.
A little good news, George is gut is moving he had 4 poops. His red blood cell count is up to 13%, still a long way to go from 35%, so whatever bleeding there was look like it stopped (knock on wood).
He is not sleeping in the corner and being a sad little bunny. He stayed closer to the front of the cage. He is moving hay around not eating but moving that hay.
The vet really thinks it a ulcer. So it looks like he will be on a couple of meds to help him, still a long way to go, but a little progress.
Now just hoping I only hear from vet in the morning.
Poor bub…. (((((Get Well George)))))
I think an ulcer is better than hepatic coccidiosis. I mean, an ulcer is still not good, but it isn’t as scary of a diagnosis than the other. Hope he feels better soon.
Another update, this mornig George’s red blood cells were up to 18%. They will only be checking them once a day now. This evening I actually had to call to check on him. Talked to a vet tech. He is doing well nibbling on lettuce and pooping on his own and being more chipper.
The vet think I was seeing the excess cecals because his gut was digesting the blood, I guess they call it Melena.
So it is good news. Still anxious every night before going to bed.
Another little update. Mostly good news. He is eating and pooping on his his own. His red blood cell count is now at 24%. However he has a fever of 105 and it was as high as 106.
Still could use some good vibes.
(((((Get Well Soon Little George!))))))
Some more good news. His fever is down to 104.4. They were able to do a ultrasound his liver and intestines look good, which means no coccidia or torsion or much lower probability. A little liquid which they think was blood , most of which was reabsorbed. That is why his red blood cell count improved so rapidly. They will check his feces this afternoon to check for anything in his gut.
He is being feisty throwing around lot and lot of hay.
He will probably be on ranitidine (Zantac) to lower his pH and Sucralfate to coat his stomach. I think the latter may have saved his life since they gave it to him initially because they thought he might have ulcers.
The best news if he keep his fever down for 24 hours he can come home!!! Thank you for all the healing vibes and the continued vibes.
Oh that is very good news, he is a very strong boy, give him a hug from me and Olly please.
More good news his red blood cell count was up to 26% and his temperature was at 103.9. He is being very very feisty. Keeping my fingers crossed I can pick him up this evening after the evening rush hour.
It looks like he will be on something like ranitidine (Zantac) and Sucralfate (Carafate) to help with the ulcers.
So glad he seems to be doing better! Keep us updated.
George is back home, with a laundry list of meds. including pen g. Any advice for critical care or giving sub q shots. how do you stop them from wiggling with the sub q?
Sorry I don’t know about the shots, but I wanted to tell him.
Thank you. He is doing pretty good all things considered. He is eating himself just not as much as he should be. He pretty much inhaled a piece of romaine. Any experience in getting the right amount critical care, and still encouraging him to eat? I am afraid I am either not giving him enough or I am giving him too much.
If he’s eating, the best way to get him to be still for his shots is treats. Let him have some banana while you give it.
George is back at the vet his gut is not moving again. Most of his blood work looked good except he had high calcium level which might indicate a tumor of some sort.
Poor George.
Poor George.
((((((((George))))))))
George had a barium swallow, he has lesion the size of a silver dollar on his stomach his calcium values are not too bad. He is eating and pooping. It explains why he does not feel so well with a big hole. It could a tumor but at his age it is probably a ulcer.
I’m so sorry he’s back at the vet.
((((((More vibes for George)))))))
How’s George doing?
George is doing well, he had been boarded at the vet since I had to go to my nephew’s birthday party.I picked up to day. He is eating like a horse so far. Loves his hay. He is on cimetidine, sucralfate and Yunnan Baiyao. I hope Olive is feeling better. Having a sore under your tongue does not sound fun. Hope he is eating on his own.
Glad to hear George is doing so well.
