Morning all, I’ve had a pretty traumatic couple of weeks with Buckley, to start with, he was neutered on 25th June (two weeks ago yesterday), as far as i am aware, it went smoothly, he was glued rather than stitched. When I got him home, he was obviously not himself, he wouldn’t eat (even treats), wasn’t interested in hay or anything, didn’t see him drink and his poops were only about a quarter of the size they were pre-op and not many of them.
48hrs later he went back for his early morning check up, the vet was not happy as his now empty sacks had filled with liquid/swollen and he needed more meds and force feeding, so they keps him for that day too and I picked him up on the Thursday night to take home. He started to have a nibble on some hay but still not himself.
24hrs later he went back in for another check up, his bits were looking a little bit better but they gave him more meds for anti-inflamatory and pain killers, but I was able to take him away but with instructions, that as it was Friday if he still showed signs of discomford to go back on Saturday afternoon for more meds, but if not, then go back on Monday for more.
Monday, went back to vet, more poking and looking at bits, he had been eating and poops almost back to right size so “come back in another week”. Went back yesterday (after the week) and although bits had shrunk to proper size, it looked like one of the internal stitches had appeared on the outside, so they snipped it off and glued him up and said he would be absolutely fine.
I can actually say that I have my little bun back, he is back to his usual self, he is so happy, he never actually matured and the only reason I had him neutered was to get him a wife and on that front I’m also very excited to say that I have been approved by a (fairly) local rescue who are now on the active search for a potential friend. They will get 2-3 possible suitors in (as they work with other local rescues too) and then Buckley will go stay with them for 4 days where he will go “speed dating” and pick himsef a wife (hopefully) and then the rescue will bond them, if he doesn’t like any of them, then they will source more suitable companions, so there’s no pressure that Buckley HAS to pick one.
A lot of people ask if their bun’s behaviour will change post-altering, as I said Buckley never matured, but the only behavioural change I have so far noticed (only 2 weeks) is that he will more readily grind his teeth when petted and he has flopped for the first time, he just seems a bit less “on edge” and slightly more relaxed. I’m hoping the flopping will become more regular as I’m sure it’s more comfortable.
Out of all this, I am so thrilled with the service I received from my vet, whilst Buckley is insured, the insurance does not cover voluntary work like neutering, so after all the problems we had and the numerous visits to the vet and being keps in for a total of 2 days and 3 further appointments, I was over the moon with the bill (bet you don’t hear that very often), it was £55 for the neutering, including a nail trim and 2 lots of £11 for the meds, so a total of £77, they didn’t even charge me for his day stay, so the total bill was approx $115 – I couldn’t be happier, I have found a vet that actually cares about he animals and isn’t out to line their pockets!
If you are still reading when you get down to this point, thank you for listening to my little story.
