› Forum › DIET & CARE › I cant find hay !
Hey, i live in philippines. I am a rabbit owner(2weeks). Now, i only feed my 2 bunnies a grass that grows in my backyard, and i know that too much grass is not good for rabbits. Here in my place, we only have DAYAMI (http://raisinggoat.proboards.com/in…;thread=12_-just translate it to english-, a hay, but its nutrients is not enough for my cute bunnies, i am worried because my rabbits poo now is black not thier usual poo which is brown.”(.help me please..
If you can find any sort of pet supply store, farm supply store, or anywhere that has horses-you could contact them and ask them if they carry hay and what kind and if they can get you what you need.
some petshops here in our place feed their bunnies water spinach, is it okey for them? and also breeders here in philippines use that”)
I’m really not sure. Maybe someone else around here will know.
Are there any veterinarians there that deal with horses and other farm animals that you could contact?
There has been a new member here recently who also lives in the Phillipines; maybe you can send her a message ask her how she handles the hay problem. Her username is Charcoal’s mom, you can look up her profile through search.
I found this link to a store located in the phillipines that also ships. http://philippinepethaven.com/forum…amp;page=6
If you scroll down to comments ithine the stores home page, it looks like they answer people’s questions — one being about do they carry Timothy Hay. They said they don’t carry Timothy, but they carry Versele Laga Hay. i wasn’t sure what that was but it looks like it a type of mountain grass — Here is the link to the actual product description. http://www.versele-laga.com/nutri/n…;pro=22751
thank you very much. I will buy that products soon, dont have enough money now because its summer and because its summer it means no allowance LoL.
Is there a way that you could do some chores to earn money? Hay is a very critical thing for bunnies to have.
Indeed. It can’t wait until summer is over, your bunnies need hay as soon as possible
naah…i dont know how to earn money, sometimes i helped my mom in her store but i am doing it without any return like money, Lol, she just giving me foods”)haha..i think my bunnies should wait for their timothy hay, grass is enough for them FOR NOW.”(.huhuh
Hi ILovebunny! Kamusta? Taga-san ka? {How are you? Where are you from?}
I was out shopping for my bunny today (she got a new food dish and fresh supply of pellets) and I got shocked with the number of bunnies up for sale in the malls here in Davao. I want to buy them all since they’re so young, I’m guessing about 2 weeks old, and give them a good home. But I already got my hands full with my own bun. It’s just so heartbreaking looking at those bunnies. Easter is also coming up, more bunnies up for sale… and I’m seeing little kids grabbing them like crazy…
Yes, hay is a problem here in the Philippines, luckily after tireless research online and calling every petstore in the phonebook, I found one who had 2 small bales of alfalfa hay available. You might want to check the local stores in your area, ask if they carry exotic pets since rabbits are considered as such and ask for hay. Alfalfa is good up to 6 months, after that, switch to Timothy. But I guess Timothy is okay all throughout, if that’s the only one they have available. Try also a vet which does service to horses, I’m sure they can give you info on where their clients get hay. Check with a vet for vitamins suitable for rabbits too…
Also, I’ve gotten in contact with a Quezon City based pet supplies seller online. She has beddings, rabbit pellets, treats and hay — can be for pickup, meet up or shipping. This is the link, she also has a facebook you can befriend for more info/pics, just check the details:

About water spinach, that’s kangkong right? A lot of rabbits breeders in Asia feed their rabbits with Kangkong, studies have been conducted about this. Try a bit of Kangkong as a once a day treat, monitor his poo though. We have a small garden, so fresh grass is accessible, I feed her that every morning in big amounts.
Water was a struggle then since a small bunny can get water into their noses when drinking from a bowl, so what I did is feeding her thru a small syringe (pry off the needle of course) or a cottonbud/qtip and offer it by touching the side of its mouth. I’ve read somewhere that you will need KMR (kitten milk replacement) for the very young bunnies, but since we don’t really have that in the Philippines, I substituted with diluted evaporated milk 1:2 parts of water (which I also read online). Someone also recommended to give small amounts of Yakult to enhance gastric health.
My bunny is about 7 weeks now, eating like there’s no tomorrow. I give her a vegetable ration twice a day, here are her faves: bokchoy, pechay, kangkong. I alternate that everyday, she’s eating about 1 cup per feeding (roughly chopped). Pellets are still unlimited and hay is always available. She gets a carrot slice everyday. Water feeder is refreshed every day, she’s fickle about the temp of the water, it’s has to be cool. Spoiled brat.
Where do you keep your rabbit? Philippine summer weather is too hot for a rabbit. I keep mine indoors, but since we don’t have airconditioning, I make sure during the day she has an ice bottle on her bed so she can lay beside it to keep cool. (Just fill a used mineral water bottle with tap water, freeze until solid and wrap with a thin towel)
Be sure to bookmark this site and be not afraid to ask questions! People here have been an amazing help in raising my Charcoal!
Hmmm… hey guys, I’m also not so sure about the color, but mine are about like large-puffed black peppercorns. Uhm, forum leaders, is that normal?
thank you very much, yeah summer here in the philippines is like in the hell LoL..i live in nueva ecija, and i keep my bunnies indoor, next to my pc, so that i can watch them every minute. thanks for that site, it is only 250, unlike other online sites that costs 305+.my bunnies are 3 weeks old now, they grow up so fast”)…and i have to make a big cage now, a very big cage.haha..and my dogs really want to play with them, but i am so afraid they might kill my bunnies! haha ! it is like -hey you, give that rats, i want to play with them- my dogs like chasing the rats in our house.hehe..
Yes, the bigger cage the better. They grow up so fast and need a lot of space to run about else they’ll feel very cramped, about 4x their stretched out size. I also sectioned her cage into 3 areas: bed (made of an old towel), litter (shredded newspaper topped with wood shavings) and food & play (food dish, water feeder and toys)… it’s better this way to somehow litter train them —poo and pee on the same spot. Cleaning must be done religiously (every other day), or else you’ll have a stinky rabbit.
I have dogs too, so far they know not to mess with the bunny or else they’ll be hearing from me.
Charcoal’s mom – yes that is fine for the fecal poops.
Thanks for giving Mybunniesneedyourhelp such good advice too!
No problem. I’m just paying forward the help you guys gave me.
i am in litter train mode now for my two rabbits, so far so good. And wait, a minute now before i online, i step on my rabbit play area and whistler flop and wiggles also flop next to him, so cute.hehe.
na-spayed(neutered) mu na rabbit mu?
Are their names Wiggles and Whistler? Very cute.
Do you know how old the rabbits are? And if they are boy or girl? You might have to keep them apart so they don’t have babies.
Their poo is probably darker in colour because they are eating alot of green. Grass is natural in a rabbit diet. The poos should be round and dry and there should be lots of it!
Are you near San Jose City? My sister lived there for the past year. : )
I don’t think my rabbit is old enough to be spayed. She’s around 7 weeks.
yep…too young to be spayed.
i dont know, im sorry, haha…my bunnies are 2 months old, i dont have any plan to get them spay and neuter I am still a student and dont have enough money for that.
@jerseygirl ,Yes, i live in san jose city, nueva ecija, ph.And there poops are dark and have lot of it in their cage even in their playing area.I am trying to earn money to buy them timothy hay.
Do you plan to seperate your bunnies? Your male is sexually mature and will mate with your female. It will not only cost you more money, but it will add more stress to you and your bunnies. Seeing a female go through prengancy is not a pretty thing to witness.
By not spaying or neutering them, they will be very hormonal, and very moody towards you. I just want to see them be happy
i will buy one more cage, and i will seperate them when my male bunny start to mate my female rabbit. but i am planing to put them again in one big cage when they are i year olds so they can make baby bunnies.. Lol.haha..
Oh, please don’t do that. There are too many rabbits already needing good homes without making more.
Just so you are aware, talking about breeding rabbits is not allowed on this site. It’s in the Forum rules and Guidelines (see below). It’s also mentioned at the top of every page.
• Posts that imply intentional breeding are not allowed: Posts that mention pregnancy, new litters, kits, or babies may be considered as “intentional” breeding, if it is not clarified as accidental. *NOTE: Repeat accidental litters from the same person will fall into this implied category as well.(regardless if it was truly accidental over and over) . Again, a surprise litter that someone needs help with, and they continue to mention their kits’ progress is OKAY, but mentioning brand new kits in a way that implies new litters over and over is NOT OKAY.
Rabbits can eat hay other then timothy hay. If that is something hard to find where you live, it’s better to get another type that you can keep getting for their life time.
It could be very expensive if you decided to breed. The mom could have complications or possibly die. Plus, she may have several babies and then you’d be stuck with them unless you know enough people to take them all in. It would be very expensive to feed all those babies until they were old enough to be away from mama too. Exotic veterenarians are very expensive too as they specialize in rabbits and have had extra training.
Please don’t breed your rabbits. There are already so many homeless rabbits in rescues, rabbits in shelters being euthanized and rabbits being turned outside to make it on their own, which they can’t. I volunteer at a Rabbit Sanctuary and we are always full, and unfortunately have to turn away many rabbits each year because we have no room for them. I know that most of the rescues stay full. No more rabbits need to be brought into this world, when so many of the ones that are already here don’t have a home.
Rabbits can reproduce at a very young age, so please separate yours now.
If you can’t afford hay, you can’t afford to breed bunnies. Just a fact of life.
@Monkeybun: Very well said.
@Jomar: Please do not do that, you are already having trouble taking care of those two, how can you take care of their babies? I’m sure you’ve heard of the term “breed like rabbits”, they multiply really fast and you wouldn’t want to be bothered seeing sick and dead bunnies.
Right now to you, it’s seems so simple taking care of them, but in the long run you’ll realize what a big responsibility it is. Bunnies are not a play thing, you don’t just grab them and poke fun at them. To them you’re a big predator, have you ever noticed that their eyes become tensed, all-round and wide? It shouldn’t be something you’ll find cute because they’re actually very scared. If you’ve read thru the topics, bunnies are very delicate and get stressed easily. Right now it’s summer and you don’t have classes, you can give them your attention 24/7; but how about when you have to go back to school? I know you’re young and carefree, but taking a bunny as a pet should be a mature move.
And they’re right, the simple reason you can’t afford a sustainable amount of hay, you cannot afford to breed them. That is if you don’t have a conscience. Also, they “do the deed” when you’re not there.
yah.. i think of it last night, it is so hard to take care of two rabbits what more if they are already 5-10? thank you for all of your advices. Maybe i should delete the idea of breeding them. I will tell to my friends that if they are going to adopt rabbits, adopt anly one, or two with the same sex. Thank you
@charcoal’s mom-do we have rabbit shelter here in the philippines?
I don’t really know. PAWS seem to cater to only cats and dogs. Most rabbit breeders here are producing rabbits for: a) pets or b) meat. Scary thought.

Regarding telling your friends to adopt two rabbits of the same sex, there can be problems keeping rabbits of the same sex together if they are not spayed or neutered. Especially with unneutered males, they are likely to fight, and rabbits can severely injure each other when they fight. Spaying and neutering is so important–for health reasons, for behavioural reasons, and of course, to prevent litters. Bonding can be difficult with rabbits, and it can also be easy in some cases. Usually the best pairing is a male and female, but they must be spayed and neutered.
Many people have been surprised by unwanted litters, after being told that their rabbits were the same sex when they got them. That’s why it’s essential to separate the rabbits before they reach sexual maturity, and have them spayed and neutered before putting them back together.
Even if the rabbits are of the same gender, they will still fight with one another. That is why fixing them and getting them bonded is the best thing to do. Bonding can be a very hard process on both the rabbits and the person taking care of them.
my rabbits are 1 1/2 old only, dont know their gender yet, but the person in pet shop told that they are male and female, but i want to see if its true.
If you want to make sure that they are boy and girl, please take them to a vet.

dont wory about my rabbits, i seperated them last night..hehe”).
I would not suggest any of the pelleted food with colored bits. It is not good for rabbits.
but what about the Natural Hay?
can i give this to my bunnies for them to chew? http://www.google.com.ph/imglanding?imgurl=http://www.exploring-malaysia.com/pics/sepak-takraw-ball.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.exploring-malaysia.com/sepak-takraw.htm&h=304&w=300&sz=23&tbnid=9XtYRUZVKRzDdM:&tbnh=116&tbnw=114&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dsepak%2Btakraw%2Bball%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=sepak+takraw+ball&hl=tl&usg=__-O5AR0GRHQBgckwMaAe5d5oWTKs%3D&sa=X&ei=Eki4TZ-vNYiovQO59omiAw&ved=0CCoQ9QEwAQ
I wouldn’t.. It looks like it has been treated with chemicals. Have you tried a willow ball?
try to look tomorrow in stores. My rabbit dont play their toys except for the tunnel that i made for them.
I think most bunnies don’t like toys that you buy them…save your money and don’t buy toys at pet stores. They are very happy with leftover clean cardboard and blocks of wood, which is very cheap.
I don’t think the sepak takraw ball is a good idea, it’s often lacquered. Toys in Filipino petstores are either for dogs or cats, size-wise and material-wise, not suitable for rabbits.
My bunny likes the toilet paper cardboard roll, anything that they can nibble safely on. I stuff it with hay and a few pelllets, makes a bit of a mess because she tries to get them out by tossing it around, but it keeps her occupied. But at this time, babies likes to sleep eat sleep eat sleep… so don’t force them to play if they don’t want to, just give them space to run about, soon they’ll just flop and lay there relaxed — they’re happy.
ok.back to the topic..we have straw here, is it alright for my rabbits to eat this.?
No, straw is not okay to feed to rabbits.
Here is what Susan Brown, DVM, a leading veterinarian who specializes in small animals, says about straw.
“Do not feed straw. Straw is devoid of most nutrients and although it is not harmful in small amounts, it will lead to serious nutritional deficiencies if it is a major part of the rabbit diet.”
Hi, this is my first time to post anything on this forum. I also live in the philippines and I am horrified by people who goes to the pet shop looking at those poor little bunny and just buy them without thinking of the future. Rabbit are not a toys and its not because they are cheap to buy that you wont spend a lot of money later on. I bought my female rabbit here at a pet shop because a kid wanted to buy her and leave her outside inside a cage, so I stepped in and bought it. You have to realise that bunny/rabbit are not dog or cat and can’t handle the heat very well. Therefore imagine the weather here in the philipines…..
When I took her home, she was sick and had a severe diareha, no savy vet around so I start looking on the internet for some help. I didn’t know how much work and how much knowledge was around rabbit. Now she is 7 months and very healthy. She live indoor and all of the Oxbow and timothy hay come from Europe where I place an order every 6 months just for her and get a Balikbayan box.
Pellet should be fed only for bunny, as soon as they reach adult, the pellet should be remove completely due to the high amount of Alfafa and calcium. Rabbit need a low calcium diet to avoid any issue. No tap water unless you live in a clean country which is not the case in Asia. Someone mentionned the diet of spinach and water, this is so wrong… Rabbit should be fed unlimited amount of hay, fresh water changed twice a day, slowly introduce the vegi one by one after 3 months of age. The rabbit under 3 months are not adept to process vegi because they are separated from their mom too early. Carrot is consider as a treat and should be given only once a week and small amount due to sugar content.
There is a great website where they explain everything about rabbit from A to Z its called the house rabbit society.
Also rabbit should be given every month a shot of Stronghold/ Selamectin 60g that you can buy from the Animal house here in Manila.
Rabbit are not toys, they are living animal and please dont buy them just because they are cute. This is lifetime purchase, as to know rabbit can live up to 7-8 years old.
I hope I have helped some of us here to take great care of our rabbit.
I would have to disagree with removing all pellets, unless advised by a vet due to health problems, or other issues. Pellets should only be given in small amounts once a rabbit has reached adult age, or otherwise by a vet. Pellets provide vitamins and nutrients for rabbits.
Dr. Lo.— Welcome and thank you for helping a fellow member out.. I am sure it is extremely difficult to find the best care there, and it sounds like you really try – even if you have to order from a European based store. You set a wonderful example!!
I do understand where LoveChaCha is coming from. My bunnies are on a pelletless diet that was recommended by my vet for medical reasons, however my vet did recommend that when I did go pelletless, that my bunnies get a large variety of greens and they were allowed more carrots to make up for their lack of fat and calorie intake due to zero pellets.
In general though it seems that HRS does recommend even small amounts of pellets Check out this article about pellet nutrition.
http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-4/pellets.html
I read in the “Rabbit Nutritional and Nutritional healing” book that if a rabbit were to go pelletless, they would need a lot of different vegetables to get the nutrients that pellets give. really good book
@Dr.Lo Potable water, and yes that includes tap water, in Davao City is considered one the cleanest water in the world.. so don’t lose hope about OUR 3rd world country…
hi. where can i find a vet that neuter or spay a rabbit in phil. or someone know a vet that spay/neuter a rabbit in mindanao area?? and is there a mindanao based pet shop that ship hay and rabbit needs?
