At 11:00 I’m heading over to a local rabbit rescue to help clean cages! I’m really excited.
I loved volunteering at the dog rescue, but had to quit when my work travel schedule went crazy. Now that I’m unemployed, I figured I needed something that would get me out of the house. Unfortunately this place is 45 minutes away, but it’s near where I used to work so at least I’m used to the drive. And the dog rescue required you to be there from 6-8pm, and now that it’s cold and dark that’s not really enticing. I’d much rather stay inside with buns during the day, which is when I’m bored anyway.
Wish me luck! I’m going to be cleaning out cages, but also getting to socialize bunnies, which I’m really excited for.
Have fun! I volunteer every Saturday and my 11 year old helps. She scrubs 30 litter boxes every other week without complaint. :0)
My favorite part is getting to say hello to everyone. Once a month I do nail clipping, which I also really like because, despite the fact that I get scratched all to heck, I get to sit with each rabbit for a couple of minutes.
I love volunteering. I would have no life if it weren’t for that.
aawwww, I’m jealous of your bunnie duties!
That’s so great that your going to help out a rescue! Hope you enjoy your time there.
Remember, if a bun nips you, it’s not because he’s angry at you – it’s because he wants to make sure that you’re real since no one else will play with him.
I’ve also upped my volunteer stuff since I’ve been unemployed, but my allergies won’t let me do in-shelter work. I did a bunch of fund-raising events in December.
Just got home from the shelter! The woman who runs it is very nice and does it all out of her home (something like 40 bunnies). The adoptable bunnies are in her garage (2 volunteers a day clean them) and I took over the unadoptables in her house since the usual person couldn’t make it. So I dove right in with the meanest bunnies and cleaned the cages of all but 2 Not that all of the “special” buns were mean – some were extremely sweet, but had medical issues that made them unadoptable. And typically the mean ones were bonded with very sweet buns, so at least I only had one going for me at a time (I did feel bad when one little guy went for his much bigger wife-bun because he didn’t want me cleaning the cage the woman at the shelter calls him her little wife-abuser )
A couple went after me a few times, but I was just patient and tried to lure them out if I could before cleaning (worked with one little girl, didn’t work on some of the others).
I also got the clean the cage of a head tilt bunny – poor little guy! He was a total spaz and would just run in circles around his cage every time you touched him or went in his cage.
Today my allergies were great and she was pretty impressed (the other new volunteer was having a miserable time). I’m actually a pretty bad allergy sufferer, but I’ve been on allergy shots for years which have made a huge difference. I know I’m not allergic to bunnies themselves (from allergy tests) but I’m sure I’m allergic to the hay on some level. Next time I’ll be out in the garage where the hay is also stored, so we’ll see how I do. At least then I’ll be with bunnies who don’t feel like biting me.
Oh my next volunteer day is not till next month.
I might have to pop in early to visit though.
I Love volunteering with the bunnies – I’m sure you will too!!!

Haha. She did mention that people come in just to socialize, but they generally only spend time with the nice buns, not the spazzy ones Once I get to know them better, I’ll have to spend some more time with the cage aggressive guys. Only one, named Munchy seemed really mean.
Thanks for the kind words everyone! I’ve really missed volunteering with the doggies, so I’m glad I have a new place to go.
I’m a little concerned that I’ll get a job in a few months and not be able to go down there anymore. If I worked at hubby’s company, I would be more than an hour from the shelter (with considerable traffic issues if I tried to go after work). At that point I’d have to go down on weekends I guess, but she probably has plenty of people for those days. So we’ll see. For now I’ll try to be as helpful as I can while I have the free time.
I’ve been wanting to volunteer for the rescue I got Moose from, was going to sign up for this saturday… but then the car thing happened, and with my car going into theh shop here soon, I didn’t know if i was going to have a car for it! So…. next month will be my time.
Good luck with your cars, MB! My biggest fear is that my old car will die – fixing it would be more than it’s worth, but we’re not ready to buy a new one yet. Cars are a pain!
My hubby is having tons of fun finding himself a new one tho.. silly man. he does love his BMWs… he’s eager to geta new one anyway. he’s been hoping somethign would happen to let him upgrade his old one lol.
Haha, well then, I guess he’s much less anxious about the whole thing than you are!
I’d like to get a new one, but since I’m unemployed there’s no way I want to spend any of our savings. Plus hubby is still paying off his car til June, so we couldn’t have two payments at the same time. I can’t wait for a few years though! I’m already thinking about what to get. I love BMWs too! Though I don’t like their gas mileage.
We’ve been lucky with my hubby’s job.. he has a good one that is nice and secure
Same here! Hubby just got the best review ever – clearly they won’t be getting rid of him any time soon. So he’s my sugar daddy for now 😉
Ahhh gotta love the sugar daddies
Don’t forget to fill out your taxes soon – unless you usually have to pay more after filing of course. I usually get a few hundred back.
My hubby got hsi tax stuff in the mail… it came with a letter saying not to file til after february, due to possible changes after an election here. lol
Mark, I’ve owed the government $25-70 the past few years 🙁 I’m hoping for a refund this year!
Glad you had a positive experience at the rescue.
Since I’m unemployed, I’ve been ramping up my volunteer work with Red Door. I’ve signed up to work two adoption events in the next month – Basically teaching “Bunnies 101” to people thinking about adopting. I get to tell PepperStories!
Also, the shelter does a quarterly “Spa Days” event, where volunteers do groomings, nail trimming, ear cleaning, pet massage, and theme photos with all proceeds going to the shelter. cats and piggies are welcome too but it’s mostly bunny people hanging out with other bunny people. I used to take Pepper all the time, until she was diagnosed with pasteurella – its’ unlikely that she could infect somebunny with casual contact but it’s still a chance I’m not willing to take.
Well, this month’s theme is Shakespeare. I’ve been performing at Renaissance Faires for decades and also do professional costuming. I had the idea to make a couple of ruffs, and asked Toni if she wanted me to try one. She loved the idea, and asked if I could come up with any hats as well.
This is the result:
Clockwise from lower left, those are a ruff, a collared frill, a gabled hood with veil, a cape, a circlet and a flat cap – all in bunny sizes. The cap and hood have ear slits. Not shown are the gold crown (cardboard and spray paint) and wreath of ribbon roses which I made the next night…. Why yes, I AM a big dork!
I know better than to try any of them on Pepper (I’m rather fond of my fingers) so they are boxed up to drop off at the shelter tomorrow. The shoot is on the 23rd and Toni has promised me pics for my portfolio. I promise I’ll share when I get them
Wendy! I have thought you should branch out into this!! When one door closes a window opens yada yada yada… Someone posted about a costume for piggies site recently and it had rabbit ones too. (That;s I think when I thought of you) Anyway, I been wanting to suggest it but thought it might not be welcomed. Also that you’d think me a bit ‘dorky’ – go figure. Must see those costumes on real live buns so please post the pictures! I see great things in your future….
oh wow, we’ve GOT to see photos when you get them! Can’t you just see a big disapproving bunny with the ruffled collar and a time-period wig just glaring down upon us!
Wendy, those are adorable! I was just wishing the other day that I had the skill to make costumes for my bun, so you’re not that dorky 😛
I can’t wait to see pics on the bunny models.
Wendy! That is so cool! Please, if you can snag us some pics, I’d love to see your beautiful costumes in action!
I had a small chuckle too… you are going to be telling people Pepper stories to *encourage* adoption… or scare them away… LMAO! (Just kidding!)
wendy – i love it! i was the one that posted the site with the cavies costumes because i think rabbit costumes have to be the ultimate cute and there aren’t that many out there.
the mixture of ruffles and disapproval is the best.
very nice work! pictures on bunnies needed pronto!
I think Pepper stories work very well for BOTH sides of the equation….1) showing that they are NOT fluffy desk ornaments and 2) if you are patient and informed they are AWESOME
And yes, I will certainly share pics when I get them!
Here you go – I made everything except the brown vest-thing that Hamlet bun is wearing and the kilts.
Ahhhhh, so frickin adorable. I love the grey and white loppy guy from Macbeth.
Lol ! What fun!!! I’m also liking the Macbeth buns in that last pic – hehehe!
Awww I Love the Shakesphere one . They are all soooo cute!
OMG!!!!!!
What a wonderful display of disapproval. Great job!!! I would have loved to see that in person.
I LOVE THOSE PICS!!! The costumes are wonderful! Your so talented!
