I haven’t cleaned Noble’s anal glands in ages.  One of them was easy, the other nearly impossible.  It was so hard, I couldn’t get it out.  Poor guy.  Any suggestions for loosening up the gunk so I can get it out of him?  I prodded him for a few minutes, poor bunny, he kept wimpering, I couldn’t stick that qtip up there again…..

Aww… you can loosen it up a bit with warm water/steam. Just make sure it’s not too hot – he’s already irked from poking his booty – he’ll be really mad if you burn it!

I saw a Rescue volunteer do it on a video. She used mineral oil on a Q-tip. If it’s a hard plug, maybe soften the edges with warm water or the oil then use some plastic tweezers to pull it out? Please correct me anyone if this is no-no!  If you don’t want to use a q-tip, maybe use a cotton ball, or wad of them.  Even a sterile guaze pad.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don’t have the heart to try it again today. I tried to get the plugged hard buildup out with just a q-tip. Next time I will use warm water and have a pair of tweezers nearby. I’ll keep you informed…..

Yes tweezers are good for that.  This happens on occassion where a big black glob of ? is in there and the Qtip won’t get it so I go get the tweezers.

I need tweezers for Kahlua’s, hers are hard blocks, so I poke em out with Qtips but you can’t really pick them up so I need tweezers to pull them out of her fur once they’re out.
Mineral oil or vaseline on the qtip might do the trick?

I second Rachels suggstion of soaking it. Put some warm water, Vaseline, mineral oil or aloe vera gel on it to soften it up before your try removing it. Put it on, let your fella go hop around for a bit and check back in 5 minutes to see if it will come off easily. Remove as much as you can then repeat the same steps. I find that a mineral/oil-based product works best for this rather than just plain water.

Thanks for the great suggestions. This afternoon, I had the nerve to once again try to remove the waxy buildup. I put his bum under running warm water, to soften it up, then I had q-tips with vaseline on the tips and a tweezer nearby. Hooray, it helped, the warm water softened it a bit, and he seemed to like it….then the q-tip with vasaline was much easier than a dry q-tip, finally, the tweezers!!!!! They pulled that HUGE plug right out. I couldn’t believe the size of the plug.

Question: I understand that it’s on the monthly maintanence list of things to do, but how necessary is it? How can you tell if you need to do it? I have a hard enough time clipping nails, I can’t imagine sticking a q tip up his you know what….

I know what you mean, I don’t like clipping nails either. I don’t clip them often enough. As far as anal glands go, I’m not sure. All I know is I haven’t done it in over a year and one was very plugged. Depends on your bun, I think.

Good job on getting that out! (hmm, never thought I would say that about a scent gland plug….)

I think that monthly or every other month is a good idea to at least check to see if they need to be cleaned so that you don’t end up in a more difficult situation and have to go through a bunch of different steps like Jacki did.
