I have been looking for information on how rabbits cope and move on after one half of the bonded passes away.  We had a female of a bonded pair pass away in foster care (Jelly Bean) and, having never gone through this before, how will Oreo handle it?  Are all rabbits different in their grieving?

Oreo was dependant on Jelly Bean to explore and make sure things were ok.

Any links or information would be greatly appreciated.

It’s hard on them; They do grieve differently. Some will stay cooped up all day long and be very depressed like; Some will be angry. Some may start eating or drinking more or less.

It really helps if the other bun passes away at home, so that the remaining bunny can see the body and realize the bunny is not coming back; If the bun dies at the vet sometimes it’s possible to bring the survivor to see the body; If they don’t see the body it’s thought to prolong grieving as they don’t know they’ve died and think they may be coming back.

When Kahlua was grieving, she was angry (chewed everthing all the time) and desperate to make friends with Rupert as she was very lonely. He finally accepted her and I think that really helped her move on.

          Here’s a great article

I’m sorry to hear that Jelly Bean passed away, I do think that it will be difficult on Oreo, if it were me I would try introducing him to some other females to see if he is receptive to bonding with someone else to help him out.

I came across this today. http://www.qrabbit.com/health.html    Scroll down half a page to find “Grieving and Pet Loss” Warning: page contains many picture regarding medical issues/ailments.

Time and maybe a new mate should heal Oreo. Binky Free Jelly Bean!

This is a good article to read from the Colorado HRS when one of a pair passes over the rainbow bridge:
