Microchipping Bunnies

I am considering getting my bunnies microchipped, and we are also looking into having all Rabbit Haven bunnies chipped.  Do any of you have your bunnies chipped?  Any experiences positive or negative with the various chipping companies?

Medusa is chipped. I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s a simple procedure- like a shot that inserts the chip. They don’t even feel it.

I also want to get my bunnies microchipped. I know they do it at the Marin Humane Society, I should now check if they do it here in Alameda. I have seen it done though. The chip is like the size of a grain of rice, and they usually do it on the back part of the neck. which is perfect for bunnies because that is the place where they are the least sensitive.

One of the biggest problems that happens is people don’t update the information when they move, so it become impossible to track them down.

As far as the companies go, I am not sure how many there are, but I would call several local shelters and ask which companies they scan for so you can be sure to have one of those. I know Home Again is widely used here. (homeagain.com)

I don’t think anyone around here does that for buns but I am sure they would if someone wanted it. Home Again is big here in Ohio as well.

From what I understand, almost all the county shelters do that around here. We had a big adoption event and adopted out 30 bunnies from various shelters – and we microshipped them all. There was even this little “scanner” to scan the bunnies microchip when they got adopted!

sounds good. i might want to get Cookie microchipped. But is a lot of money?

I do not think it costs too much.  I think my vet charges $5 to $10 for the procedure, not sure how much the tag costs.  I will probably call them and find out soon, I can let you know.

Pepper came already chipped from the shelter.  I had to pay $15 to the chip company to change her info, including my brother in CA who is my second contact.

I want to get my kidlets chipped too. We just moved and with a sliding glass door near them, it has me worried!

This might actually be a great fundraiser for the Haven, I wonder what kind of equipment is needed to chip bunnies.

I think its closer to $50. Our local shelter chips all the animals that they obtain and they will chip walk-ins as well, for a fee of course, I recall reading. So look into your local shelter cause they might be able to do it for you and cheaper. Different regions use different chip companies. Shelters use c hip scanners that are cross compatible and each company works off different freq.. so no matter where you go you’ll never have to worry. Just make sure you update your information. Now, if you are savy with animal vaccinations you can inject the chip yourself, it utilizes a syriange for injection.

Avid & Homeagain are the more popular companies.

Speaking of chipping….

So I was talking to a friend about chips and was shocked to hear what she had to say since her dog had recently run away. When we get out pet chipped, they then scan the pet to keep the chip number on record, right?

Apparently our local SPCA is so inundated with animals that they don’t even scan the various pets they pick up!?! This made me pretty angry / upset! What’s the benefit of chipping if it still doesn’t help get your pet returned to you?

When her dog couldn’t be found she called the local shelter and was told they don’t scan, despite having the technology to do so. i’m not sure if this is common or not. just something to think about…

and she did find her doggie, he was ok!

I asked at Palo Altos animal services today, and they charge $35 per bunny for the chip and the registration.

Gravehearted, if they are really not scanning incoming animals, that is criminal!  They hype these things at vets, shelters, pet stores and try to sell them to us.  What is the point if they do not scan for them?  I have heard of small shelters not being able to afford the scanner, but for a large shelter, the scan takes a minute.  How can they not have time?

Its absurd for them not to be able to scan or to even care to scan. Most shelters charge for retrieveing a lost animal so that is a loss of income.

Osprey – that’s what I thought too! I was appalled that they have the scanner, but don’t bother checking the animals. it’s terribly upsetting!
