i want to let everyone know that i have gone in and edited the subject line of the threads that show the bonding process from start to finish.

the title remains the same, but i have updated it with *BONDED* afterwards.  this will give new people a good starting point if they want to read about successful bonding.

if you decide to document your bonding experience, first of all… THANK YOU!  reading other’s experiences is very helpful for people to see what does and does not work for some buns.

second, my suggestion is that you try to keep the whole process in the same thread so the back story is available for folks coming into the story late.

finally, if you have the ability to take pictures (or even better, short 1-2 minute videos!), that is very helpful when determining body language.  it’s usually easier to “see” what is going on then to try to put into words…

Absolutely! Two neutered bucks can be bonded. Unfixed rabbits will more likely fight and it can be nasty.  On how long it takes – this is totally variable. Some create an instant bond, sometimes it’s a week, 2, a month, several, even longer. Some bonds can be difficult and take longer maybe due to rabbits personalities or history, but they get there eventually.

2 things that will help are having neutral space to work in (i.e.area both rabbits have not spent time in) and consistancy of bonding sessions. Daily work with them should get them well on the way to becoming bonded.

If you have further questions, perhaps start a new thread regarding your rabbits. I’m afraid your questions might become lost in this thread…

                                Hello Griffenbun.
If you create a new thread for your question it is more likely to be seen and answered. Currently your post is at end of an older thread and may get lost. For a new thread, just click on Add New Topic at the top left hand side just above the Green bar titled “Topics”.

In case you don’t create a new thread I’ll try answer your question. (I can paste it in new thread if you do make one.)
When the rabbits sit heads together like that they are requesting each other to groom them, It’s a bit like a stand off between them. Have both your rabbits been spayed and neutered? This will help tremendously in bonding.

by the way, I have my eye on that little grey dutch marked bunny of yours!!!!!!!

yes they’re both spayed/neutered.  good to finally know what that means !! I’ve been google-ing it like crazy! There is definitely alot of tension in the tub with these two!  She is for sure the aggressive one, she seems annoyed that he is so eager.  Do you think there’s any hope?

Peter (neutered) met Patty in early September. Just a quick visit with two watchful humans. And the rabbits just watched each other. Peter is usually very timid and that held true for this first meeting. They were about six feet apart and since Peter is generally a nervous wreck, when Patty moved he did too. She is a lionhead dwarf mix and is blind in one eye, just a few months old. She would turn her good eye towards him so I know she was watching. Peter did come closer when I picked her up….
Peter is a Holland Lop. After that short visit, Patty came and lived in a cage next to Pete. They got together for short visits in the room and he mounted her a lot. I would let it go 30 seconds, then say no nicely and push him aside a bit. I would also put her back in her cage for meals and after being chased a lot. She is very mellow and did not seem to mind anything. I made sure he did not mount her head, having read that.
Now they have two cages side by side. It was a process, putting her away at night so I did not worry but he would sleep in front of her cage and pine for her. It really was love at first sight. But they made too big a mess and the vet would not fix her until 6 mos. old so I gave her back to my friend’s barn for 2 months. Pete really missed her but I was traveling and could not worry about them peeing and pooping everywhere. I got her back in early December and pretty much kept her in her cage when I could not watch them. Or blocked off their room so they could not mess up the whole house. She got fixed about 2 1/2 weeks ago and they are still so in love and happy to be together. They are never more than 2 feet apart. He is very protective or possessive. If I talk to them, he puts his head on her neck. I sometimes feed them separately because she eats slowly and he wolfs down his food. So I put her in her cage to eat for awhile. They still make a mess in the living room and I find some spots of pee in their room. So the living room is off limits with screens and I am hoping the marking of territory will ease once her hormones disappear but I really don’t know.

I am sitting with them now. She is munching hay stuffed into a wine box (with separate compartments) and he is watching her and me. His two prized possessions, I guess he thinks

Bonding of bunnies is the bunnies choice, not ours. A neutered male with a sprayed female to protect will still fight with another neutered male. If no female is present, the male bunnies will bond but in their own time. We as humans, must be patient. In rabbits, age does matter. Older rabbits whether male or female, feel it’s their responsibility to keep the younger bun in it’s place. Nipping or head dominance is a normal behavior while bonding. Head dominance is when an older rabbit wants to be groomed first & the younger bunny has not learned it’s place yet. Bunnies will use a nose to nose position or forehead to forehead behavior, each trying to force the other one to allow them to push their heads under the other ones chin. By being the bunny under the chin first, that bunny gets groomed first. Most of the time, it’s the older rabbit who gets under the younger rabbit’s chin. If the younger rabbit fights this action, the older, more experienced rabbit will teach the younger bun it’s place (nip at it) until it learns how to do this. When a rabbit is grooming or licking you, it means they’ve accepted you into their world/ into their family. It’s a very special moment for a rabbit to accept you so let them lick your arm & gently pet them back, to seal this bond.
