So – Coco and I have what I think of as a little game.

I will say “I’m gonna get Coco” and chase her. She will run around and around her cage.  She does a funny little head shake and tail wiggle. Sometimes something that kind of looks like a half binky.

I have assumed that if I am annoying her, she will hop into her cage and refuse to play.

Tonight, she kind of stopped and got into a more defensive position…so I backed off. There was no grunting or lunging. Just that “look” – you know the warning look.

Maybe I am completely misreading her and I have been scaring the heck out of her and she has finally had enough and decided to tell me to knock it off.

Or maybe she doesn’t feel like chase tonight.

It’s hard being a rabbit mom sometimes.

Shadow and I play the same game. He runs away, stops and waits for me, then starts running again. If he is not in the mood he goes under the couch or off to his corner. If I don’t make the attempt he gets very sulky or he will tug on my pants leg and nip my feet.

I always played chase me with Spockie. He’d run and then wait and run again when I got closer. One sure fire way to know if it’s a game for Coco is to stop, turn around and run away. If Coco chases you, it’s a game. I’d been doing this for ages when I read somewhere that they find being chased scary. I was disappointed for a bit, but then he chased me and clearly wanted to go back and forth. Don’t worry. (And she may just be pooped.)

Most buns don’t like to be chased as it is a predator/prey thing. But if they have accepted you as another bun, then it may just be a game.

Maryann loves the chase game. She loves to put up a thumpin’ storm too when she finds a place that she thinks I can’t get to her. Dono, on the other hand, thinks that the chase game is a prelude to a bunny dinner. He’s not into it at all.

I have been letting her take the lead – she does chase me a bit, and then flip around to be chased. So I watch for the “PLAY THE GAME” body movement before I initiate.

I suspect I startled her the other night, when she confronted me.

Again, it is one of those things that I am growing accustomed to – watching these very subtle body language clues. SO not like a cat or dog.
