I have not posted for a while here but thought I’d bring this up to see if I can get some ideas about Luey’s poop habits .

He is and always has done a more than larger amount of the night time poops for some reason I don’t know why.  However, he tends to drop them on the floor and they end up getting squashed and pounded into the vinyl  (mmm nice cleaning up for Mum later!! ).  He will mostly do the hard droppings in his tray but these ones are decorated all over the floor and on his box where he sleeps (heck knows how he puts up with them right under his nose!!!)

I am extremely particular about his diet (no goodies from me!!!)  I know I’m mean as … he gets plenty of hay and a 1/4 cup pellets in the morning … I feed him his greens every other evening as he is a lazy bunny and even when he is out he just lounges around.  I give him the Chinese veggies for his dinner, but no bok choy or spinach or those other veggies that cause problems.

Last night I decided to make his pen smaller .. heck knows why now thinking about it but I was hoping he’d use his tray to deposit the night poopies … he was dreadfully nowty last night thumping to his heart’s content (he was out roaming too … he very rarely thumps at all!!) he was even thumping at my feet  .  I could not understand why then ooohhh duh Dawn I realised he was miffed about me making his pen smaller. He would not even go in it!

I like him to have some room to move so this morning I have made it a bit bigger!

I know he is getting the right amount of food etc … but just wondering if anyone else has this problem like myself … doing the right thing but the results are still the same every night … Perhaps its just my bunny

If it’s still occuring…His diet sounds fantastic…You know, maybe scoop some and take them to the vet for them to run tests…Maybe he has a parasite, or gosh I don’t know! But with that diet he really shouldn’t be not eating his cecotropes *VIBES*

How big is Luey? Maybe 1/4 cup pellets is too much for him?? I feed 1/4 cup pellets total for my 2 rabbits- so only 1/8 cup each, (one is a 5.5 lbs mini lop and the other is 2.5 lbs lionhead who is still growing a llittle bit). Beside’s K&K’s suggestion of asking the vet for tests the only thing I can think of is to try cutting back on pellets a little… maybe try feeding him greens every night and cut back on the amnt of pellets as I don’t think you have to worry too much about overfeeding greens- its the pellets that are high in calories…

I ditto K & K and Bob.  I would suggest bringing some poops to the vet as well as cutting back the pellets.  I too only feed 1/4 cup at the MOST 1 time a day.  Actually I’ve cut down to 3/16 ?  am I doing my math right???

Your vet may recommend putting him on the beneficial tummy bacteria stuff…sorry I forget what it’s called….oh priobiotics.

Thanks guys for the advice.  I’ll cut his pellet consumption by half and see how the Grouch goes!

Dawn, it could be that Luey is getting too much protein in his diet. This will cause and over-production of cecotropes.

I have cut down on his pellet intake to 1/8 cup now … perhaps I should cut out the pellets for a while and see if it subsides.

i wouldn’t cut the pellets out completely. we had discussion about pellets a few months ago and how they fill in the little nutritional gaps. what kind of pellets are they? timothy based? and do you know the nurtritional info or can you find it?

He gets just 1/8 cup now … I am not sure what type of pellets they are … packaging has absolutely no description and the time I asked in store he just shook his head at me … like!!!  I have texted Lisa43 to see what type she uses for her buns.  Timothy based items are very very dificult to get here in Perth ….

and there’s no brand name or company info you can search online? that’s frustrating…

The pellets in Perth do not have the ingredients written on the packets. Most of what is in the packets I would say is junk food.

The rabbit Savvy vet here would not tell you either, she is for profit, profit and profit.

Yes so dam typical here …. and very frustrating as well … I agree with you Lisa … are you still seeing Elizabeth at the Rabbit Shop … personally I agree with you too … and the staff there are very unhelpful … there used to be a young guy working there … he was so helpful and very savvy with rabbits … I remember I went in there with Sprinkles and he did not even charge me … but he unfortunately has moved on … and not that I blame him … he was wasted there!

I have headed to everyone’s advice here and have reduced his pellets down to a tablespoon now … and am giving Luey double hay which he loves.

No more stinky poops for a while
