I don’t let my bunny have the whole apartment to run around in. Is this okay? I have a very large section (about 12 feet by 3 feet) sectioned off by a playpen that Boston gets to run around in when I am home. Is this enough?

I don’t let my guys have whole run of the apartment either; my main reason is that I’m *in* an apartment and I don’t want them to do something while I’m not looking that I end up getting in trouble over…
However, I do let them out in the living room/dining room supervised …

I’m trying to picture 12 x 3 feet…12 feet seems long enough, but 3 feet doesn’t seem too too wide. But that being said, as long as he’s getting out and getting some exercise I think that’s good

          Welcome to the forum!!!

that’s a very large section to have, what a lucky bun!  with that being said tho, i’d still let him out for supervised out time… if nothing else so he can bond with you and run off some of his energy (bunnies do the Bunny 500 where they run laps at lightning speed) and his area is not big enough for that.  they really only (in my experience) want to play for a short time, about an hour, before they’re searching out a place to nap.  so if he could come out for an hour in the morning and an hour at night, i think that’d be great for him!

I keep my bunnies caged and let them out for supervised runs for a couple of hours a day. I like to switch their run places (bedroom, rabbit room, living room) once in a while to keep them from getting bored. A bored bun is a desctructive bun.

I think the more you can let your bun out to run the better but many people have buns in cages that are never let out (unfortunetly) but I think they are much happier when they can spend time with you and have lots of space.

Thanks for your responses everyone! i have noticed that she is much happier when she has room to run around. If I do let her run around supervised, I’m assuming I need to cover up my wires (she chewed through one her first day home)…What do you reccomend I used to cover them? I’m kind of scared she will go under the couch and chew on my carpet, especially since I live in an apartment! Any help here?

bunnyproofing is vital.  there are cord covers you can get, or you can block off the entire cord area (for example by your tv or computer) by constructing a cage with NIC cubes.  i’d also try and block off the back of the couch.  buns can cause major damage to soft furniture, and it’s not good for them to eat that stuff.  your best bet would be to crawl around the room and anywhere you don’t want the bunny going, block it off.  you may also want to keep the bedrooms off-limits.  if you have a living room, dining room, kitchen and hallway, that should be a good amount of space for running.  as soon as you bunnyproof, the rabbit will find a way to outsmart your system, so be prepared for trial and error.  but bunnyproofing is all about safety for bunny and peace of mind for you.  if you do a good job, you should feel secure enough to leave the room to use the bathroom or do something in another room without constant worry.

                    Hey Allen!

I’ve had my bun for a lil over a month.  I’ve always let her out for a few hours a day.  But TODAY is the 1st time I’ve let her be out all day. And she did great!  No accidents!  She only has access to my kitchen and living area.  She will run around for a bit and go back in her cage for litter, food and naps!  Someone told me that u can use duct tape to tape the cords to the wall, but I don’t like that idea.  Sticky residue and ugly.  ;(   but I get chords up high, that i can, and put the rest in some type of lil plastic piping that my hubbie got fm work.  And so far she’s not been in any trouble.    Also my house is just baby proofed pretty well anyway with all the electrical stuff, etc since I have 2 children.  A 4 yr old and 18 mt old.

My bunnies have large pens, and the only reason they are confined to them at times is because Bailey and Rucy don’t get along, so they have to have separate times out. When it’s their time out they usually get 24 hours runtime. HOWEVER, I must say, both my husband and I are freelancers and work from our home office, so we’re here all the time, AND my bunnies are older and are much less destructive than when they were 2 years old. They don’t chew on anything they aren’t supposed to anymore. Jack and Rucy do not mark at all in the rest of the house, and so their behaviors and our lifestyle do allow them more freedom. Even if they all got along, I would have a homebase pen that they understood was theirs area. This can help prevent marking elsewhere.
