Oh my God. This picture just breaks my heart. I hope all bunny/animal lovers in that area reach a hand and help out. I hate how I live so far. I want to help them.

Oh my! I’m glad that person surrendered those poor rabbis. Was this person a backyard breeder or someone who got in over there head? Does anyone know.

I know very little about where they came from.  I’ll try and get some more information and let you all know.

Kokanee – I don’t know why you can’t see any pics.  I guess you should go directly to their website and the story is there.

                                Of course, I wish I hadn’t seen that one now. That just makes me sick as hell, (pardon my French), was that bunny even able to be saved? ;_;
Oh the poor, poor things! I’m expecting a dividend soon so I hope it will get here in time for me to help donate. In the meantime, my sincerest prayers are going for those bunnies!

So I just got back from a day there (I decided to skip work today to help out the buns). One of them is in pretty bad shape (the one you’ve seen above). He’s still in need of some medical attention as things are still oozing a bit. There is also one lady bun who is extremely thin and pregnant. Both of them are going to see Dr. Harvey tomorrow along with a few others (they have to terminate the pregnancy as they already have like 16 babies there). The ones I have seen aren’t too bad physically other than being filthy – however emotionally they’re pretty bad off. The little girl was honking in fear for a good 10 minutes when she was put into a corral at Save A Bunny. A few others (albinos) are still at the San Francisco Animal Control Center and all except for ‘jumpy’ are, well, extremely jumpy towards people. Jumpy, however, is a big (8 poundish) albino who will tooth purr while you pet his nose and then give you kisses in thanks for it.

It is a major juggling act there (and I actually put in a male with the lil’ momma to be by accident whoops!) but somehow they make things work. Marcy was actually on “Eye on the Bay” today with the buns, informing them to NOT get a bun for easter for a present and that the average age a kiid should be to take care of a bunny is 18

I”ll be going back to socialize some more of the buns on Sunday. It’s amazing how much love they want. They’ll scamper away from you, even kick when you pick them up or grunt/lunge at you but the moment you have them in your arms, they snuggle in for the pettings. Marcy is calculating that the cost of this sudden dump/rescue could reach five digits – although the vet at the ACC in SF is helping alot by doing a good number of the alterations there. But all the children will need to go to private vets and that’s about $150 per kid.

Oh, and the story is just that a year ago someone got two buns from a pet store (I believe it is the El Cermonte’ pet store – they’re notorious for this) and didn’t get them fix and now, BLAM! 29.

OMG That is seriously the worst story ever! What kind of excuse is that oh my goodness….

Markus that is sooo awesome of you to skip work and help out!! I know it must be sooo hard to see that stuff in person, it’s hard to see over the net!
I have absolutely zero cash right now (had a huge vet bill on friday and literally had to use my student loan to cover it….), like really no money soooo I emailed my parents pictures and asked them to send money! I’ll see them tomorrow and use force to get something sent to the shelter!!
I am going to go hug my bunnies

                                              Markusdark,

My donation the other day was right at the $150 level.

I dont have speakers for my computer because a bun chewed through the (unplugged) wire – but I *have* to ask – which lady shown on the video front is Marcy? I’ve spoken to her on the phone, we’ve sent emails – I’ve spoken with Joann countless times and would LOVE to put a face with a name.

(heck, I’m tempted to snail mail Holiday & Fiesta’s foster Mom a goodie rabbit-package for all of the work she did for them while she had them but I dont know if that would be odd)

When you see Marcy, if you remember, tell her HELLO from Jessica, Holiday & Fiesta – the splay legged babies in Missouri.

I haven’t heard from her in a few days but I’m holding off on emails because I *hope* she is flooded with help offers. When we spoke last time I offered to take some in and my offer still stands.

Ah well, I’m SO glad you were able to help out hands-on. I wish I were closer so I could – but all I can do is offer from afar.

Leaf – Marcy is on the right. Pretty woman with the dark hair. Everyone should watch this video! Thanks for your generous donation. I am going to try and go Sunday and see what I can do. I’m sure Marcy is flooded with work and calls. She did instantly respond to my donation though. I actually feel a little better seeing the video. I’ve been worried about going over there because I don’t know if my emotions can handle it!!!

Markus or anyone who’s actually been up there in Mill Valey since this happened:

How many of these bunnies are babies?  The spay/neuter expense for 20+ rabbits will be high.  I am sure they will get some free ones from local vets, but that’s still a lot of rabbits to fix.  Are these all Red Eyed White bunnies, or various kinds?

There are a variety of buns. I counted 7 REW’s myself but there are a couple of soft greys and some spotted rex’s. Most of the rabbits are around 1 year old as the person surrendered them after the last population explosion.

Yes, this is why you need to get them spayed. The way things usually run are:

I have two – it’d be nice to have babies.
Okey, I have the babies but I’ll seperate them before they get pregnant
OMG! I got so many now, I’ll have to make SURE they’re seperated
DAMN! I thought I knew what were boys and what were girls!

And then, you have a flood of buns. It is a typical story.

So I don’t get it.  You mean this idiot decided he was in over his head and decided to just dump them?  Where were they living?  Why were they so injured?  Because they were not fixed and they fought?  This person should go to jail!

It’s soo terrible because when people are reported for animal abuse (besides the fact that not much happens anyways) it usually means that rather then surrendering them they dump them off outside when it’s closed or worse…But at the same point, You want to report them and put them in jail for a long time. It’s disgusting and I wish there was some sort of solution. On the upside, it looks like in Canada our animal cruelty laws are getting updated…

I don’t know all the specifics of the case but yes, I do believe he realized he was in over his head and surrendered them to the ACC – which, IMO, is a lot more responsible than many others.  I’m not sure where they were living but their injuries were due more to other, unaltered buns than their living conditions.

Even if convicted of animal cruelty, it will more than likely only be a fine.

Is there any way I could make a donation to help out … I know I’m in Australia.

Even if I could direct debit funds into someone’s bank account and then you could pass on the money to Save A Bunny.

Hi Dawn…I think you can use paypal to make a donation…check out the site http://www.saveabunny.com and I’m pretty sure that should work, it also I think (I looked yesterday) allows credit card donations.

Knowltons – THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS.   I was going to do that today, and saw had already done it.  Thank you!

Dawn – the direct link to the donation page is http://saveabunny.org/?q=donate   I don’t know how paypal works internationally.  If that doesn’t work, you can email me, and I’ll forward the email directly to Marcy’s email, and I’ll call her to let her know to watch out for it (as she gets bombarded with emails daily)

I used to go to SaveABunny every single Wednesday, (did that for years) until recently when Marcy has asked me to help her more with the site stuff.  I really miss going there, maybe next week, I will just grab my laptop and work from there, so I can also spend some time with the bunnies.

SaveABunny really is a great hardworking fun creative group and  trying to fund it all is always a struggle, and now with Easter coming up….oye!  The shelters always get filled up post Easter after the novelty wears off, so the cost of this recent rescue is gonna hurt ’em.    So thank you to those that have donated.

                                                                  1 Stupid Human = 29 rabbits suffering

Are there laws on this sort of thing? Can he actually get in trouble for doing this? I know the laws around here are pretty lenient towards animal cruelty which makes me sick. I read in the paper just yesterday that a local man broke his roomates 2 month old kittens leg, then 2 days later strangled and buried it. He was put on probation. I was FUMING!!!!!

Did the person drop off those buns anonymously?

Spent Sunday over at SaveABunny again and brought the girlfriend along with me.  Did some major cage cleanings as new buns came in.  We also got a couple of people to foster a mom and 7 kids combo of “Love and Kisses” as well as a pair of abused buns “Dandelion and Maui”.  Some people stopped by to check out buns but I don’t know if they decided upon it.  And Leonard (below) went to his forever home!

I personally cleaned out 4 cages, 7 carriers, vacuumed the place twice and spent some quality time with the “Difficult bun” Munk (who’s a sweetheart when you get him on your lap and give him ear rubs.  We had three new arrivals from the rescue (they’re coming in groups as the SF ACC alters and clears them) and one bun infested with mites who looked just like Maryann.  It made me feel good that I was helping out these people.

My girlfriend spent the day socializing and grooming buns.  She probably went through 10 of them and each one was ‘cuter than the last’.  I took her there with the hopes that she’d love the buns enough to consider getting her own bun neutered so he could get a friend – which worked like a charm.  She has to check with her roommates but I hope to talk to them and explain how having two buns will not be much more work than having one (I know, I can lie a little).

With buns infested with mites, do they keep them away from others?  I really don’t know how this works.  I just don’t want Edson to catch anything with all the sick guys there.  I can’t believe how neurotic I am over this rabbit!  I have no qualms about boarding the cat & the dog but the rabbit?  I’m a wreck!

The buns that are ‘contagious’ are kept away from other buns until they are no longer as such. They not only have a downstairs bathroom that acts as a mini-hospital but there is also the upstairs of the house that they could sequester infectious buns. So, you shouldn’t have any worry about your bun becoming infected.

Knowl – you really should bring Edison by someday and have Marcy take a look at him and see if there’s a suitable single for him. Call first and set up an appointment. She’ll also be able to board your bun as well. I have seen two boarders there so far during this whole fiasco. She’s getting people to foster some of the new buns.

In addition, she’s still looking for volunteers to help out. I know that EVERY shelter is looking for more volunteers. Marcy just put out a request for more help with simple cleaning of cages because she’s currently paying about $600/wk on a cleaning service to make up the excess with the extra buns. I’ve just volunteered two evenings a week along with all of my sundays to the cause.

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘space’. The house rabbit society has about 20 cages (a couple of them 2 level condos) that the buns are kept in.  They are the big cages most of us people who use cages for our buns have.  They get daily exercise in an X-pen and are, of course, treated very well.

With Save a Bunny, the bun is housed in an X-pen, not a cage. If the bun’s a ‘jumper’, they clip a sheet over the top as a lid. I don’t know if they get daily pets and so on like the HRS will do but they do have a good amount of space to romp in 24/7. And that’s another thing. Since the shelter is in Marcy’s home, there tends to be someone around more often than at the HRS.

Pricing difference is minimal and if I was going to board, it would be at Save a Bunny – though that is also due to the fact that I know that Marcy can handle Maryann.

I do like the idea of the xpen over a cage. They SAY they get lots of pets and attention but who knows. Thanks – that’s what I wanted to hear that you’d choose Save A Bunny over HRS.

Thanks Markus!  I’ll be reminding you in July!

I just wanted to let y’all know that I spent my Easter over at Save A Bunny helping out.

The buns are doing terrific. Even poor Lionel Barrymore is doing much better. He’ll be going in to see Dr. Harvey this week for some follow-up surgery and a little nose job.

There is an amazing group of 7 female Harlequin buns in one cage that are scared to death of people. It has become my personal goal to try and help socialize these buns. Half of my stay at the shelter was me sitting in their pen and playing a video on my phone while they investigated me from top to bottom. Apparently my shoes and the back waistband of my pants are the tastiest.

Marcy has also done a TERRIFIC job of finding more foster people for the buns (with the secret hope that they’ll fall in love with their bun and adopt them of course – but shhhhh!). I spent a little time with one of these new people showing her how to pick up a rabbit as she is left handed (as am I) and Marcy was having a little difficulty translating.

Things are moving but not all of the buns have come to Save A Bunny yet. For every one she manages to take in (either from the large rescue or elsewhere) another two aren’t saved. She did a phenomenal job of getting the word out before Easter about buns as presents and we are hoping that the flood of unwanted buns in another month or so will be a little reduced.

Oh, and I also got my ‘scoldings’ yesterday for what I was doing wrong. There are some things I learned at the HRS that Save A Bunny doesn’t do or does differently. But I don’t mind Marcy’s blunt attitude towards these matters – it makes sure nothing is mistaken.

I was there for 6 hours along with my girlfriend. We were tired, smelly and had more fur than clothes by the time we finished. And neither of us think we have ever had a more fulfilling Easter.

P.S. – I checked all the cages, just in case – but no eggs.

I attempted to encourage the 7 lady harlequins to be more friendly with me by offering them rasins. They are a big NONO there – in fact any high sugar fruit is off limits. They offer them some banana to help the meds and every so often a baby carrot. Their recipie for buns is 80% hay, 15% greens, 5% pellets.

I also got a little correction about telling personal stories to people as such things may not be the same for others. For example, both Maryann and my girlfriend’s bun Fitz like to play the chase game, where we chase them about the house. However, most buns don’t like to be chased. So to tell that might get people thinking, “Oh, I’m just playing with my bun” whereas they’re actually scaring the bejesus out of them.

And when I say, “Scold” I don’t mean yelling and screeching. It is just in a very matter of fact way of saying “We don’t do that here.” Which I said I prefer that so there’s no mistakes.

BTW, when are you going to bring Edison by so that Marcy can meet him and think about a girlfriend for him? Of course, check with her first not me.

Oh, and as for dedication, I just feel like it’s repaying Marcy for gettin’ my two buns together. I feel that just he boarding fee wasn’t nearly enough.

I do understand how peaceful and relaxing it is to have bonded bunnies. Life is much brighter! It can really be a huge pain all around when they don’t get along – Between the separate housing, the frequent sessions, the stress, and “back” pain from bending and leaning….ugh. So, I fully get how thankful you are. It is still really nice of you to do all that you have done.

I am not sure what the status of the rescue is right now, but I just can’t help but keep on writing here whenever I’m done with a shift at the shelter.  I had worked briefly at another shelter exercising dogs – taking one after another out for a half mile run (when I used to be in better shape) but that only lasted two weeks before I made the mistake of walking into the back where they were loading up all the animals that they had just euthanized.

I went looking for three of my favorite buns but two of them had found their forever homes!  Stew, the giant black bun who was suppose to be food and Kimo Sabe, the blue eyed hot-tot.  Actually I got to see him there with his new girlfriend as they were just finishing up bonding the two of them.  The lil’ stinker is VERY jealous and went to nip me when I went to pet his girl.

One of my new favorites though, a male dutch named Sammy – the one that was infested with mites – was at the doctor’s.  Apparently there was some unknown damage to his tongue and this explained why he wasn’t eating or grooming himself.  The outlook is good though for him.

Marcy is an incredible person (well all people who run shelters are incredible).  The way she finds buns new homes (either forever or foster), how she can juggle all the needs of the buns AND the shelter and so on.  It is also amazing how every volunteer helps, even if it is only for a short period of time.  I went over there Sunday night.  I was tired from a camping trip that weekend but figured I’d help out by just refilling the water bottles and hay racks.  It turns out that that simple job saves the shelter around $100 of paid work by the cleaning crew she has to hire.

Although it is sometimes a tiring job, the simple moments such as seeing Nadia, the lil REW bun with the bad leg (below), doing binkies in her cage when I approach her just makes all the strain disappear. (This gal has NO idea she is a ‘special needs’ bun and can run just as fast as any bun I know).

So Marcy ended up doing Edson and did everything from trimming nails, cleaning glands, ears and even fully brushed him.  She had no help that day and the place did not look as it usually does.  Spotless. I am so happy to hear you came to help.  I saw the pens with some of the 29 rabbits, the girls.  And in the middle of the room were 2 being bonded. Oh so cute. Then I left and felt like I should have pitched in.  I don’t know what stops me and I feel sooo bad about it. You saw the shape the place was in.  You are an angel going to heaven.  I’m going the other direction…

I am going to have to blow Marcy off this weekend as my home needs a lot of attention itself. The bun that had the emergency was Sammy. The two being bonded was Kimo Sabe and his new girlfriend. She called me, I believe Sunday morning and asked for the help. Luckily, we called our camping trip short and left the campsite at around 2pm. I’m not an angel, I am a dirty old man who, as he feels his age upon his body, has decided he better start getting some karma ‘brownie points’ stashed away.

Oh, and of course the buns are cute.

I know that the rescues really find their volunteers to be absolute life-savers, and especially in the case of rescuing rabbits, you really are saving lives I told my bunnies to save up their allowance and we’re sending a bit of $$ over to help with the rescue.

Knowltons, thanks so much for helping bring this to our attention, I think its so great that we have so many fantastic members here that want to help out with the rabbits! And how ’bout that lovely little Nadia *nudge nudge* have you showed Edson her picture yet?

You gotta take a look at Dianna & Poe’s video at http://www.saveabunny.com If I didn’t have Edson I really wanted Poe. He captured my heart way back in November because he would sleep on his back and it was so endearing. I couldn’t find him on the available rabbits recently and kept wondering if something bad happened to him. Then I saw they moved him to the special needs rabbits. He’s in love with an identical white lop. They are soooo cute. If I just had more rabbit space I would get them! P.S Markusdark gets ALL the credit for physically helping! I just donate $$. I would, however, like to help them do a major fundraiser.

I just heard that Sammy’s back but he needs to be fed through a NG tube for the next 2-4 weeks! They’re looking for a foster who can feed him 4 times a day. I’d offer but, besides not having the space, my shedule wouldn’t allow me the proper time for feedings.

Well I call any white with pink eyes REW’s.  I’m stupid that way.

Oh, there’s another special needs with a bad leg named Tippy.  We tried pairing the two of them together but apparently Tippy doesn’t like sharing.  I hate to say it but it was funny watching them run in circles due to both having the same side bad leg.  We have put them in cages next to one another so that they may get a little more used to one another.  Oh, and the below picture doesn’t do him justice.

It was garbled and I could hardly make anything out but I *think* it was from Save A Bunny. I just e-mailed Marcy to see what’s up. Maybe it has something to do with some of these guys.

Both of them can move normally, aren’t compressing their bodies and so on. The only reason that they are noted as ‘special needs’ is that the owners will need to keep an eye out for signs of arthritis as they get on in years.
