cage bedding & litter

Ihave 2 questions. 

1: We use the SafeCare chips for the bottom of Shadow’s cage and Yesturdays News for her litter pan.  Is that needed or use on or the other. for both her cage floor and litter pan?

2: She has recently started tipping her litter pan on it’s side.  Should we remove it from her cage?   I was also thinking of putting it under her cage loft.  Yes/No.  She doesn’t really use it. We really don’t know why, she does use the corner pan behind a chair we have in the dinnuing room.

As far as chips for the cage floor I personally would not use it. I just use a towel in there on one end for Edson to sleep on if he wants to. I just think it’s way too messy to have the floor full of that stuff. There is probably a way to secure that litter pan to the cage with some kind of clip. Mine is pretty big and sits in front of his hay bin so I never have to worry about that. Do you have a picture of your set up?

I agree with Knowltons about the chips on the cage floor – not needed and probably confusing to her.

Have you tried putting her corner pan from the dining room in her cage? Might give that a go since she seems to prefer that pan.

i would try alternative bedding in the cage.  either a towel or inexpensive rag rug that can be washed, or a straw or grass mat that can be chewed and replaced occasionally.  i assume your cage is not wire bottom, so there’s no need to have something down to protect her feet.  what you may find is that even given an option of a towel or grass mat, the bun will probably just lay down on the solid surface for much of the time.  buns are weird like that… lol.  you do want to make sure she is on soft ground sometimes to prevent sore hocks.  also keeping nails trim and making sure she is not overweight will help with that.  the good news, you’ll save money on not having disposable bedding in the cage, plus it will be much less messy and will allow you to truly see how she is with the litterbox.

onto the litterbox… my first rabbit Stepehn was a litterbox pusher.  he wouldn’t dump it, just slide it all over the place.  we had one of the large high side corner boxes for him (and for Meadow now)  my husband drilled a small hole in the top corner of the high side and we would loop a ziptie thru it and around the cage bars to keep it in place.  the only downside… you have to cut the ziptie each tiem to clean the box, but they’re very  cheap to buy, so we would just have to loop a new one thru every 2-3 days when we cleaned the box.  most importantly, it worked.

The cage is all plastic and has a ramp/loft. The corner litter pan is a smaller pan than the one in her cage now. I think it’s (the litter pan) is fine she has only done that once. last night. I will try it without anything on the flooring.

Should we be using any bedding at all in the base of her cage, or just a towel (bath??)/mat.

try an old (clean) towel or cut-up sheet.  if she’s a chewer this may not work because you don’t want her ingesting the fibers.  if she is a chewer i highly recommend the grass mats.  Binky Bunny sells them on here for very cheap, or they have them at most pet stores (for more money) in the small animal section.

Hi jpgood, she may be confused about where to go potty if her cage is lined with bedding and she also has a box in which to go potty. In lieu of the bedding on her regular floor, place a towel or sea grass mat. The thing with moving the litter pan is that you really need to let the rabbit decide what spot they want to go in. If under her cage loft is where she goes most often, then that would be a good place.
