About two weeks ago we took Sunshine to the vet to look at her poppy butt. The vet gave her a butt bath, trimmed her matted fur, and prescribed metcam due to arthritis in the lower spine. Since then, she’s been taking .02 mg of metcam everyday without fail. So I’m trying to figure out if her urinating is due to another physical issue, or if it’s behavior related.

Yesterday, while feeding her slices of mandarin oranges for a treat, she peed on me. I was completely confused because I was feeding her a treat. She’s never done that before. Then tonight, she left a decent sized puddle of urine on the floor after I fed her a few of her pellets, before giving her the usual portion that is served every night as her reward for going inside of her cage.

So I ask the question – do you think this is behavior related of physiological? There have been no changes in her appetite, and her stools are normal.

Bad urine habit can be due to a UTI or E cuniculi, it’s a parasite that affects many different things in bunnies and the tests give false negatives and positives so it’s best just to treat them with panacur for 28 days and sometimes it takes longer treatments to help. Every bun has EC but it only starts having effects if there are any stressors or illnesses, then it will start showing signs. Asriel and Bombour on here, one of hers has EC and it affects potty habits of hers. Hopefully she’ll see this and she can give input.

With hind leg issues and urinating, I’d be concerned about E Cuniculi. Hind leg weakness is a hallmark sign of the illness, and frequent urination is another sign that is lesser known. The blood test is quite expensive, and the result can often be a false negative if your bun is not in the top tier of the disease. A lot of vets will treat on suspicion. Treatment is typically a 28 day course of Panacur.
