Died after neutering

My bunnies went in today for their neutering. I expected to come home with two of my beautiful fur babies but only returned with one. After a successful surgery I was due to pick them up at 4:15 but due to circumstances my mum and brother ended up going at 6:30. When they got there they were taken into the room and told he had passed at 5:30. It came as such a shock as he was such a boisterous little bun with so much energy and life in him. My other vin who is the same age had grown up with him from birth and so he has now lost his best friend too just like I have lost mine. I’m not sure what to do and I know that he’s going to get lonely but I’m not going to get another bun due to the pain of this. I was so ready to have two neutered bunnies ready to be bonded for life I don’t know what to do with myself

I am so sorry for your loss. It’s always painful but I am sure especially shocking when you already have news that the surgery was a success. Based on your other posting about this it looks like the one you sadly lost is the one that was falling over at times. There could have been something wrong with him to begin with.

I lost a young buck around that same age that I was trying to bond with Doodles and my first reaction was that I will never go through that again. Please don’t close the door just yet on getting another bun. You will know in time what is right for you and your bun but things are still way too fresh to make any decisions. I personally decided that we went through way too much and Doodles waited way too long for a friend to not give it another try regardless of how much my heart was hurting thinking about another bun. With that said that may not be the right answer in your situation and only you will know what is right.

This happened to my Jasper he was allergic to anasitic, seems quite a common occurrence, such a shock especially when he was so young, I know vets recommend neutering but I’m so scared to get clover my new bunny to have this, I lost two bunnies due to anasitic. Very sad and very upsetting.

I know it’s awful. I really don’t want to get another bun however I know that in the long run it’s the best thing for ginger to have a friend. Im even more apprehensive because I’m too scared that it will happen again and after the heart break of losing toffee I don’t think I can go through that again. I’m looking into adopting a pre neuteredbun if I do decide that we should get another bun for him. It must be horrible to lose two in the same way after how shocking and upsetting it was after losing the first.

I am so sorry about your bunny! When I took two of mine to the vet for their spay and neuter I was worried all day… and afterwards because I was hoping they would be okay. They both ended up being fine and are now bonded. I would recommend getting a bunny who is already fixed so you don’t need to worry about the same thing happening again.

I am so sorry for your loss. I thought I had my mind set about getting Marinette spayed but now I’m not so sure. I am going to have to talk to the vet about their success rate and how many spays they have done, but I was planning on doing that anyway. Is there any way to find out if your bun is allergic to animistic ahead of time with out putting them under? I will definitely be praying hard about this decision.

Honestly don’t be put off by my experience. There are so many benefits to it and it reduces the risks of cancer especially in doe’s.I’m unsure if it is possible to find out if the bun is allergic before hand but I know that it is a really rare occurance and unfortunately we were part of the handful of unlucky ones. Toffee needed to be neutered and so although it is terribly upsetting I know what we were doing was for his best. He had the best life whilst he was with us but unfortunately his life was cut short. Please don’t let this affect your decision, unless you’re really sure that it’s what’s best for your bun. Speak to your vet and maybe they can help you with your decision and help put your mind at ease.

I am going to meet the vet soon for her first well bunny check up. She still has like 4 months til she will be old enough for the procedure. Its scary but if they have experience and a good success rate then I will do it because I know its best for her. It is a vet college with an exotic pet department so IDK if that is better or worse. But if I am not convinced they are the best ones to do the surgery I might take her to Montgomery. Its a longer drive but that hospital is not a school and I know they have a rabbit savvy vet because that is where the Alabama HRS chapter is located. I am glad Toffee had a good life its sad when a loved one dies so young. Animals are more then just pets.

You’re 100% right. Am I right in thinking your from the states? I’m from England and so they could do the procedure differently. I’m not sure that they do but their could be some things done different. And just do whatever you feel is vet for her. Good luv

you are right I’m currently living in Alabama. I don’t think we have bunny vaccines here yet unfortunately. I’m a big believer in preventative medicine. Thank you for the well wishes. Its so cool how the internet has made it so that we can live across the pond from each other and still be a part of the same community. I joined this forum to make friends and get sound advice on caring for my new bun. I am glad I met you just wish it was happier circumstances.

I agree. I too wish it was under better circumstances. You don’t have vaccines over there? Wow I didn’t know that. They’re a big thing over here. My bun ginger has had all of them and before our new bun we buy on Thursday is put near him, she too has to have them all. I’m guessing that the diseases aren’t as big in the states as it is over here? Or is it that they haven’t been approved? Either way it’s crazy how different care is.

I think vaccines are very important even if the bunny never goes outside. Its always better to prevent an illness if you can then to treat it if it happens. That’s why I am going to get her fixed I am just going to make sure I feel like I have a good vet for the job.
