I am getting my beautiful female mini lop, Pepper, spayed on the 27th. I am interested in getting her a friend so she won’t be lonely, because bunnies are social animals. I found a very very pretty female Holland lop but she is only a baby. She can’t even be taken home until the 10th of April. Would it be safe to try and bond them before the baby bunny can be spayed? I don’t want my larger, mini lop to hurt her. Also, at what age can baby bunnies eat veggies? I have heard that they can’t eat veggies until they are older but I was confused. Also, when should I switch her from Alfalfa to Timothy and change her young pellets to adult pellets? Thanks!!

It would not be safe to try and introduce a baby. It’s recommended that both bunnies be altered before bonding is done. This means you’ll have two separate bunnies for a while. You’ll want to wait until the baby is spayed, healed, hormones settled and prebonding is done.

You will get mixed answers about greens. Some say to wait until 6 months and some say 3 months. Either way you want a slow introduction.

As far as pellets it depends on the brand. I know some go to adult at 12 weeks and some go to adult as late as a year. My bunnies have been on Timothy Hay since they were babies. If you are giving a good alfalfa pellet they will usually be fine with Timothy. If you decide on giving alfalfa it’s normally recommend stopping by 6 months.

Doodles, thank you so much! You have been answering almost all of my questions and I am very grateful! If I do end up with the baby bun she will stay in a dog exercise pen in my room while my older female bun will be upstairs working on free roaming most of the time! I will just get a good alfalfa pellet and give her Timothy/grass hay! Thank you so so much!!!!

My pleasure Pepper the Bunny! I am happy to help when I can. I know how frustrating it can be with so much conflicting information and so many differing opinions out there.

I had separate bunnies for a while and I will say that it’s not the most fun time I had. It was worth it in the end now that they are happily bonded. If you have the space, patience and energy to do it your plan could work. Good luck with your decision!!
