I woke up this morning to find Gus refusing food and stretching himself out on the floor repeatedly- I assume he has gas or worse (he’s had these symptoms twice before in the last year; once passed on it’s own in a few hours the other time I took him to a vet.)

I’m going to wait to see if he starts feeling better on his own first like the other time but in the meanwhile –

        – Is there another safe brand of baby gas drops I could give him? Infacol doesn’t seem to be available anywhere here, I’ve looked on a lot of common stores online.

        – How long should I wait before going to a vet?

I just use the generic gas drops.

If he doesn’t eat or poop after 12 hours, it’s considered an emergency. I don’t know how long it has been now, or if he’s still eating or pooping.

I decided to take him to a vet anyway even though it hadn’t been too long – he was acting quite distressed, and I have to work tonight so no chance to take him in after 12 hours.

He had a low temperature , his tummy was quite firm and he was a little dehydrated. I opted to keep him in for 12+ hours so they could try to get his fluids up and get him eating as the vet was worried he might have a blockage. I’m to call them in a couple of hours to see if he’s improved, and then if he’s doing better at 2am when I’ve finished work I’ll be able to pick him up (fingers crossed)

I’m going to have a very anxiety filled shift at work (provided I can stop crying long enough to get there)

I’m so sorry for your distress!! (((sending hugs))) I know what that feels like. You did the right thing by bringing him in, given the circumstances. But please don’t worry too much — he’s in good hands, and they’ll take good care of him. It’s good you acted fast, but this is pretty common and, caught early, it usually resolves just fine (in the absence of rare complications). Let us know how it goes. We’ll be cheering for ((((Gus))))

You did the right thing taking him to your vet. Please don’t worry, though its totally understandable

Healing vibes to (((Gus))) He is lucky to have you looking after him.

Please let us know how is coming along! xx

Gus is home again. He is eating a little and pooped a lot when he first got home. I got a whole 4 hours sleep before it was time for his 2 medicine doses – wow was that an ordeal. I didnt manage to get the full dose of either medicine as he was getting too stressed out – i was holding him on the bench on a towel and had his head secure but he still kept managing to avoid the syringe. Really dreading having to do that every 12 hours…. anyone have any advice? I put banana on the syringe tip first, i wrapped him up in a towel…he’s just a difficult patient! Could i maybe mix some juice in with the dose to make it taste better?

You could try sitting on him. Sit on your knees on the floor and sandwich him between you legs. Make sure there isn’t a gap for him to back up in an attempt to escape. Then lean forward and steady his front end with one hand. You can hold his head if necessary, but I often find it isn’t necessary. You then have another hand free to get the syringe in his mouth.

Two more medicine sessions later and we are both getting the hang of it a bit. For the second session I thought I’d try keeping him on the sofa but he wriggled right out of my grip and kicked me in the mouth

By the third try there weren’t really any issues at all – I picked him up (which he hates) put him on a towel on the kitchen bench, pressed him sideways against my chest with one arm along his other side so I could hold his head if need be, then syringe in the side of his mouth.  He’s not fighting too much any more now he’s realized it’s over quickly and that he gets banana afterwards.  Still not managing the entire dose but he seems to be happy and eating a lot so it must be okay as is.

                      Thanks all for the help!
