So, I have had my bun Shinobu since September of 2018; about 5 months. She is about a year old now, and I was hoping that after getting her fixed and a after a couple months going by that she might be less territorial and aggressive towards my two cats. I really want them to be friends but I just maybe haven’t taken all the slow correct steps for them to bond. My oldest cat who is 5 is deathly scared of her now, and my other cat, will be 2 in a month, he’s loves being chased by her but I worry because he is very strong and playful. Anyways, the bunny spends a lot of her time under the couch, when she hears a cat hit the floor she darts out after them. Idk if she is having the best time of her life or if she is always under there because she’s sad. Any advice on cat/rabbit bonding and just bonding with her in general for all of us would be awesome! We love her and we love our feline babies as well, I just want us all to live in peace. Help!!

Rabbits are very unique pets because they are among the only prey species kept as companions (aka not in an aquarium). They are instinctively scared and defensive, making bonding them with other pets, most of which are predatory species, difficult. It is possible to get a cat/dog and a rabbit to get along ok, though. Heck, my bunny Panda likes my dog more than she likes other rabbits. But as far as actual bonding, like you would bond two rabbits, it is unwise to attempt that with a cat and a rabbit. Even though both are domesticated, those predatory/prey relationships still exist. Basically: don’t leave them together unsupervised, no matter how much you trust them.

If your bunny is always hiding out under the couch and then chasing them – she is likely terrified. That aggression has nothing to do with hormones so being spayed wouldn’t have had an impact on that. Rabbits are prey, cats are predators. Sometimes a relationship can work but it doesn’t sound like it’s a possibility with yours
