I had saved Thumper (Dutch mix) from the humane society on 4/27/2016 as my first pet and moving out companion, Thumper passed away from a respiratory infection in the middle of the night on 1/24/2019 (a day i will always remember).

I had put thumper back in his cage after attempting to give him his medication at 11pm. I put his favorite blueberry treat in his still full bowl, just hoping he would eat it, but he hadn’t been eating much at all and i knew what was coming i just thought i had more time. I woke up at 7am the next morning and got ready to take Thumper to the Vet for a checkup, thats when i found him laying on his side, which i knew already was a bad sign as he hadn’t done that in a long time. As I came up to the cage i saw he wasn’t breathing, I screamed his name, picked him up… he was already getting stiff, I sped to the vet but 5 minutes later they came back saying they couldn’t save him. I cried for an hour straight in that room, holding him, apologizing, wishing i could of done more. He couldn’t of passed much longer after i had put him in back in the cage and i keep thinking about that night i was unknowingly holding him for the last time alive. he was only 4… my first rabbit, he was such a good bunny, always friendly, always coming up to the cage to anything any everybody. Now he sits above my bed always watching over me. I miss you so much Thumper and i’m sorry I couldn’t be there when you passed, but at least my other rabbit marshmallow was there for you.

i figure i would like to give a small story about him. When i first got him, it was a her and her name was princess (we were gonna change the name thats just what name she was given at the humane society) at least thats what the humane society thought. When i took her to her first vet checkup, they came back into the room holding her telling us our princess was a prince. We laughed. Now all that memory brings is tears, but i wanted to share one of the many stories I have with Thumper.

in his memory I returned some toys i got if he had gotten better, bought 4 bags of 25 pound rabbit food and donated it to the humane society. I also sponsored a rabbit cage which came with a plaque that i labeled:

        “We miss you Thumper

        saved 4/27/2016-Passed 1/-24/2019

        Watch over everyone”

He was with me through the hardest points in my life. I hope he’s watching over everyone here and keeps an eye on all your bunnies, as he was immediately friends with any bunny he came across… he just wanted more friends. Always love your Pets, you never know you will hold or see them for the last time.

I’m currently at work and came across this wonderful community and made an account to post about Thumper. I will post pictures when I have access to my phone on break.

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my sweet bunny on 02/02. I know what you’re feeling. Please don’t blame yourself, or at least understand the we all do that. It’s part of grieving. It sounds like you took care of him well. You will get through this; I know it’s not easy. I’m crying with you…
