Small white spot on eye

Hi all,

So for the past week I’ve been every busy, but of course snuggle my rabbit whenever I can. I didn’t notice it before, but I now see a white spot on his eye! I’m totoallt freaked out! It looks like a simple almost, although not lumpy or anything. I noticed the iris is also deformed now! Could it be something stuck in his eye when I didn’t notice? I’ll attach a picture below. He seems totally normal otherwise, so I guess there is no pain. I’m very worried he will go blind though

It could be the picture quality, but I am noticing some glob on the bottom right of the pupil as well. I suggest going to a rabbit vet to have this assessed. Some times a rabbit can get hurt by a hay poke, and this can leave a white mark that isn’t harmful (happened to my Wick); however, there are a lot of progressive eye diseases as well. A rabbit vet will be able to give you the best assessment of whether this is worrisome.

How old is your bun?

I think you should make a vet appointment for your rabbit, with a good, rabbit savvy vet. It should be investigated.

Eye problems like these in young rabbits especially can be related to e cuniculi, a microscopic parasite that the bun gets from its mother already in the womb. It should be treated promptly. There is nothing you can do yourself about it.

It could also be a bacterial infection (abscess), in which case you treat with antibiotics.

I would also definitely take him to a vet. I see the white spots at the bottom but almost his whole pupil looks cloudy.

Thanks for your replies. I noticed that other white spot too. It seems like it might be something stuck also, and I’m afraid to give him any eye drops as some other websites say I should. I have a vet coming to the house Wednesday or Thursday since I don’t think I’ll have time this weekend, and I’m not sure if it’s truly an emergency. I don’t think he’s going blind, but I’m worried it will be irreversible. It would be one thing if it was just a white spot, but the deformation is making me very anxious. Also, he’s turning 5 soon, so I don’t think that is too old, right?

I think you can wait until Wednesday or Thursday, an emergency vet visit wouldn’t be of much help unless of course he’s showing other symptoms like refusal to eat etc.

I’d not put anything in his eyes until a vet has seen him. If it’s an abscess he’ll need systemic antibiotics, not just drops, if there’s an injury to the cornea, certain eyedrops could make it worse, if it’s a ruptured lens, eyedrops might potentially be beneficial, but I’d wait for the vets recommendation.

You can rinse the eye with 0.9% saline eye wash for humans though, preferably the sterile, single dose type. If there actually is sth stuck, rinsing could help get that out. But what looks like sth is stuck could be a sign of a ruptured lens, so don’t try to pick it out or anything unless it comes all loose with rinsing.

It could be just the picture but I’m wondering if above the cloudiness I’m seeing if he has some brownish/redish pigment on his pupil? It looks to me like there is something unusually in the top 1/4 right by where there is a peak in the cloudiness in the middle of the eye.

@bam Yeah, I really don’t feel comfortable putting anything on his eye, but if I see it get any worse, I might call my vet and ask about making doing the rinse. I usually come home from work late at night and I guess I didn’t see it. He doesn’t seem to be in pain but I feel bad, and that I should’ve caught it sooner.

@Doodles I think it might just be the photo reflection. I took another look and I don’t see the cloudiness on the right anymore. Maybe it was a window reflection?

It could be a reflection. It didn’t look like it to me because it almost looks like a lighter version of what is happening at the bottom but it’s so hard to tell in photos. I am glad to hear at least there isn’t cloudiness throughout. I was curious myself so I was looking for similar photos so that is why I asked. Little tip for everyone out there….don’t google image eye conditions in rabbits. Some photos out there are very disturbing.

I know for some eye conditions getting early treatment is crucial so I would see if my vet at least has time to look at the photo to give me their thoughts. I wouldn’t beat myself up about it. For all you know this just happened and you couldn’t have picked up on anything earlier. Please keep us posted!

@Doodles, I learned that the hard way also! Haha. A lot of rabbit eye problems tend to be gorey on google. But this is minimal. It still disturbs me as it looks like eye is deformed. But from fat away it looks normal. It doesn’t seem to change at all, so that’s good and bad since it’s not getting better. I sent a picture to my vet and she didn’t say much other then Thursday was the best day. She usually airs on the side of caution so if I’m waiting to the middle of the week l, it must not be that bad to her.

In the photo, it almost looks fluid. Kind of like lipid deposits within the eye.

So the vet came by and took a look at my rabbits eyes. She couldn’t se much, I think because too many lights were around and the spot is close to the bottom of his eye. She did a due test and it seems nothing is damaged internally. She gave me a 7 day dose of anti biotic eye drops, and then we will check again. I’m still worried but hopefully this helps.

She said it looked like some kind of small trauma in the photo.

I have been giving him the drops but it doesn’t seem to change anything. I’m getting very nervous

Oh Kazuya I am sorry you are getting nervous. Try not to worry too much especially since it doesn’t sound like the vet was overly concerned. It may just take time! There is also a possibility that it might never go away but at least it isn’t getting worse!! Trust me I know it’s hard when you don’t know 100% what it is.

Thanks Doodles for your kind words. I know I worry too much about him, and the vet even joked with my rabbit about it, but I care for him! As I’m sure all owners on here feel.

I actually got a message from the vet. She sent the photos and history to a vetranary opthamologist and they said it is actually an old corneal perforation, and when healed became synechiae. The Perforation must not have been noticed, and since the eye did what it was supposed to, and healed, it scared the eye. Unfortunately the eye will just be this way and there isn’t anything that can be done. His vision doesn’t seem to be impaired, but it is probably not as good in that eye as before.

Thanks for the update! I know we all hope when something like this happens that it will go back to normal but honestly I would still be relieved with that result.

I had a dog that got a scratch on her cornea and even with treatment she ended up with a scar that covered most of her eye. Her sight was significantly impacted She adapted just fine but it did make me nervous about eye issues! If his sight isn’t as good as it was before he probably doesn’t even notice it at this point.

I can imagine the relief you must feel to finally have an answer!!
