So recently, I’d say in the last few weeks, I feel like the bun is constantly acting like he is starving.  I mean to say it’s the point where I feel bad.  If i open the fridge (he lives in the kitchen), he comes running there and i mean he is incredibly eager.  I give him a 3/4 cup of pellets in the morning and he devours it.  I also give a cup of fresh veg and he devours it in no time flat.  I fill the pan with hay and it’s gone by the time i get home.  I give him more hay and he’ll keep eating and eating it endlessly.  I went to the vet and the vet was showing  that the dish of veg i give him should be his allotment for the day and even said a little less than 3/4 cup on the pellets.  but the bun seriously gets through his entire days allotment of food so quick.  i try spreading the veg out among the day now but maybe that means he’s not actually getting full.  i feel bad because i feel liek he’s really hungry but i don’t want to overfeed him.  I don’t know i don’t feel he was ever this obsessive about eating.

          Hi there,

Some buns are very food crazed! It’s great that he has a great appetite for hay. How much does he weigh? 3/4 of a cup pellets is probably too much, even for a large bun. He should have hay 24/7, so if he is finishing what is in his tray, add a hay rack so he always has hay available to him.

I feed my buns about 1 cup of greens per 2 lbs of body weight, so you might be able to up his greens as well (slowly to prevent tummy upsets).

oh i didnt realize that. now that i recall i do recall the vet saying even 3/4 of pellets might be a bit. i will cut back on it. he absolutely love brocolli and could eat it all day. currently i feed him about a foodbowl full of greens each day. maybe i can up that a bit. he weights abut 5 pounds if i recall.  and yes he LOVES hay.  im not sure a food rack as i wouldn’t have anything to hang it on however   he just has a standalone pan in the room and im not able to screw things in to the walls.  maybe ill look for one that attached stand alone to a pan!

If you don’t have anywhere to hang a rack you could always add another pan to the room so he Hasmonean hay or fill up cardboard boxes and toilet paper rolls with hay for him and put them around the room. My bun came be messy with these but i do t mind sweeping it up later if it means he’s eating more hay

At 5 pounds, as an adult he should only be getting 2tbsp. Pellets are a supplement, not a main dietary source. 80-85% of the diet should be hay, 10% greens, 5% treats/pellets.

For a hay rack, you could get some NIC style grids and attach a hay rack to one of those!

Check out this nifty and cheap hay hopper idea:

You could do this and just put next to his litter tray? Then he can much all day and night!

Also, broccoli is not a great staple veg for buns. It can cause gas in sensitive buns, and is pretty starchy. Aim for mostly leafy greens with high fiber.  Here’s some info on safe veggies and amounts: https://binkybunny.com/BUNNYINFO/VeggieList/tabid/144/Default.aspx

Really the leafier the better! My buns love dandelion and cilantro.   It’s good to aim to feed at least 3 types of leafy veg per day. When introducing a new food, go very slowly (a little at first), and only try one new food a week to make sure to not upset his tummy.

omg, that hay of the carboard box is so awesome. I can SO do that! Also – I was wrong, it is not 3/4 cup he was getting, but a little less than 1/3 cup. I had recalled the wrong amount. The vet had told me to give him a little less than 1/3 cup – does it sound like too much? I didn’t know that brocolli wasn’t good for a main. Usually I give him a mix of carrots, brocolli, and cilantro, because I’d given him a lot of things and those seemed to be his fave (and brocolli is his absolute most favorite). I can definitely change it up to do more dark leafy greens!

Awesome! Yeah some buns are fine with broccoli, so he can still have it sometimes, but usually leafier is better for their tummies.
