Hi all- I am new to this website and have some questions about bonding!
I have a 5 year old male Lionhead rabbit who is currently living at my parents house. He’s been around dogs and my cat numerous times and seems nervous but also curious, especially with the cat, but has never acted aggressive towards them. The only signs of aggression he shows is if im sticking my hands in his cage too much to feed him or clean his litter box he’ll somerimes do his little grunts but that’s about it. Doesn’t nip or bite, and can be very affectionate when he’s laying on me. I am often away at school or work so I decided to get another rabbit to keep him company. I found an 8 month old Lionhead female at the shelter and although she’s much younger and smaller than him, she was too cute not to get. She’s very curious and friendly, but so far does not like being held. However has shown no signs of aggression. She is currently at my boyfriends apartment where I’m often at as well and am going to eventually be moving into. I previously bought a cage so I could bring my male Lionhead to the apartment sometimes, and that is the cage she’s currently in, so she was introduced to his scent. The male has been neutered since he was a year old, but the female just got spayed on the 4th of January. After doing research some websites are saying wait 2 weeks to introduce them, some are saying up to a month. I am asking would it be safe to introduce them at 2 weeks or should I wait? In this case I am impatient as they are being kept in two separate houses so I am constantly going back and forth between the two to take care of them (I feel like I’m cheating on them) so I would like to have them introduced to each other as soon as possible. I know the bonding can take some time but I would still like for their cages to be next to each other in the same house. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

          Hi there, welcome

So, it can take a while for hormones to settle. I’ve heard 3 weeks – 6 weeks. Even longer in extreme cases. I would probably split the difference and go with 1 month to start. BUT, if she is acting really aggressive or hormonal, give her more time. Sometimes they have hormonal surges a couple weeks post-spay.

But, you can house them side by side now if you want to. Having a hormonal bun next door might make your boy react more strongly to her, so he might mark more, etc. I would wait to start cage swaps and the pre-bonding “clock” until you are pretty sure her hormones are drained.
