I have a 5 year old albino rabbit that has what looks to me like infected scent glands. I have done everything I have read about. Cleaning with peroxide and tips, epsom salt baths, keeping her clean, great diet, clean cage, fresh water, I am so frustrated as to why it won’t go away. Anyone have any similar issue?

I am not familiar with infected scent glands, however, I advise seeking a rabbit vet to see if oral antibiotics are needed. While an infection can look solely surface-level, if there’s part of the infection below, no topical treatment will be able to combat it, meaning the infection will keep coming back.

Also, although it may look like infected scent glands to you, it’s always good to get a professional opinion to ensure you and your rabbit are using time and resources effectively. I’m sure it will help ease frustrations as well, whether it’s confirming what you suspect and getting a more effective treatment, or offering an alternative explanation and getting the correct treatment.

Infections in secretory glands are hard to treat because they tend to have lots of pockets to harbor bacteria. Topical treatments are nearly useless and even extended antibiotic treatment is iffy. When my Xavier got infections in his chinning glands my vet basically insisted on surgery. You’ll almost certainly have to see a vet for this.

Just an infection in general requires more than at home treatment. It’s like when humans have a sinus infection vs a cold. You don’t need medications for a cold, but you do with a sinus infection. At home remedies may even exacerbate the issue. Just get your bun to the vet.

Thank you so much everyone. I think the vet is our only option.
