I was at the shop with a young friend of mine who has Special needs,he wanted to go and see Father Christmas so he could give him his letter, my friend is nearly 24, but he loves Father Christmas, we were stood in the queue waiting and parents were asking their children what they were going to ask Father Christmas for, so I asked my friend and he said. “I can’t tell you, its all in my letter, its secret between me and Father Christmas.” He took out of his pocket his letter in an envelope and kept looking at it and smiling, there was a little girl with her mum before us and she got called through, we could hear them talking and Father Christmas asked her what she would like for Christmas, she said. “I want a white rabbit, a real one.” He said. “Oh a rabbit, they don’t need much looking after, they just need some food water and sawdust, what does your mum think to you having a rabbit?” Her mum said. “I think its a lovely idea, no they don’t need much looking after just stick them in a hutch round the back.” I was like ‘Face palm.”

After we saw Father Christmas, the girl and her mum went into the pet shop and bought a rabbit, a bag of sawdust and a bag of food and a small hutch

Sorry for double posting but I just got an idea! What if there was a pamphlet or something with proper rabbit care for the kids/people who go see and ask Santa Claus/Father Christmas for a bunny with more info links so this doesn’t happen again for where you guys went to? Would that be possible?

Oh joy, another parent that will neglect and abuse a rabbit. People disgust me.

The RWAF in the UK has a campaign called A Hutch Is Not Enough, http://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/campaigns/a-hutch-is-not-enough/for-retailers/, trying to get retailers interested in the welfare of the animals they sell.

I personally think the best way forward would be a ban on selling live animals in stores (maybe with the exception of fish – I can’t say anything about fish because I have no knowledge whatsoever). There would of course still be breeding, but getting a rabbit from a breeder takes more planning, you can also get to see the environment the rabbit has been raised in etc.

I think a ban on live animals in pet shops would be a huge improvement.
