So i didnt want to bump an old thread, but Gimly is back at the vet today, all day, for observation. He still hasnt gotten any better since he started acting lethargic/lowered energy/running into things about 6 weeks ago. Hes had blood work done and xrays done and everything has come back fine. He had his teeth burred last tuesday(has this done often) and his bladder flushed of his severe bladder sludge. He was on an antibiotic as well for 10 days. Nothing is improving. since his teeth burr he seems less interested in hay than he already was. i have been syringe feeding him some critical care to supplement the fiber for him. hes still eating all his food and favorite treats and loves petting. the only new thing i have noticed is that if he really leans over to scratch behind his ear he will flop over, and i have seen him seen a bit wobbly sitting up to groom as well. but he gets around hopping just fine. We might try EC meds even though that test came back negative. Im not sure what else we can do.I hate seeing him this way, but he still looks happy, and has had better days than others.

Honestly I think treating for EC would be a positive. Most EC tests come back negative even if the bun is having an active infection. They really need to be in the top tiers for their numbers for the test to come back as positive. My boy Bombur has chronic EC, which is different from a bun experiencing acute flare ups. He needs to be treated with EC meds every few months in order to stay good. I will say, be patient. EC meds can take 2 weeks to really kick in and you see the affects. So if it’s not working right away it doesn’t mean anything. When Bombur was first diagnosed he was on back to back rounds of Oxibendazole. We didn’t see much improvement until a few weeks in, but then it did start getting much better.

To be completely honest it has sounded like EC from the start to me. The neurological symptoms and the urinary symptoms all really point to a flare up of EC. Which is why I honestly think it’s best to pre-treat before knowing for certain because the test often has a false negative.

Our vet( who is a rabbit savvy vet) just wanted to explore some simpler options first before diving into EC treatment. She mentioned it to us after we picked him up last if he didnt not improve at all. Her only concern was that apparently rabbits can become anemic on the EC meds, so she would want to monitor his blood, which im fine with. I’ll see what she tells us later today after seeing him, but im leaning towards EC treatment. Is there just one basic medicine used, or a couple options? Is it a fairly easy medicine to give?

There’s a few different options. Usually anything in the Bendazole family. It’s so important to get that 2 and 4 week blood test though! Bombur has only been on Oxibendazole, which is considered a stronger one because it actually crosses the blood-brain barrier unlike some of the others. But most vets treat with Panacur (Fenbendazole). There’s a third drug that my vet says isn’t as effective, Albendazole. Here’s a good link to read on the disease and the treatments http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Neurology/cuniculi/pyrimethamine.htm

It’s a standard liquid med. It’s given for 28 days, and you’ll need to go back after 14 to pick up a new bottle because it expires rather quickly. It’s also a good time to go get that 2 week blood test. I’ve always just squirted it on his nightly greens to save the hassle of excess handling.

thanks for the update. hes really good as far as medicine goes and i have no problem handling him and squirting it in his mouth, so long as its some kind of sweet flavored medicine. he goes crazy for metacam after his dentals and we just put it on his oats. im just hoping that since its been about 6 weeks since he was in, that we haven’t waited too long to treat him.

Honestly he’ll be fine as especially if he responds well to treatment and it sounds like he’s a fighter so that’s always in their favor. I think we waited to treat for EC too. We initially treated 4 weeks on antibiotics with no luck, so we got the blood test with a big fat positive. He’s usually much better 2-3 week into the meds.

Sending you guys so many vibes <3

thank you. he is a little fighter. hes been tough throughout all this and is actually healthy outside of this issue.i have been getting him to be a little bit active every night and hes super happy with his food. still pooping a lot overnight too even though they are smaller due to lack of hay, but he takes his critical care like a champ. His test even came back negative for it, but we were told its not uncommon to get a false negative.

Im kind of confused. The vet called us and said he was showing the same symptoms there that we explained he was at home. She thinks doing EC treatment is a good idea but only wants to do it for one week and then see if there is any improvement. Isnt that too soon to show signs of improvement? Im going to mention to her doing atleast 2 weeks to start with.

Like I said, we really didn’t see much improvement until after the second week of treatment. It seems a little odd to only do it for a week.

I agree, EC meds sound like the best option. It’s what I would push for in your situation but it needs to be done for the whole 28 days for it to be effective. As far as I know, even if it’s not, EC it won’t cause him any harm to be treated for it.

Thanks. I asked about the week only treatment that was suggested as a start, and it was because he didn’t really have tell tale signs of EC. But ultimately it’s up to us. She said to call back Saturday. I’m going to say we need to do at least 2 weeks and then a blood work up. The reward vs risk is worth the treatment here.

I agree, I would push for EC treatment, it won’t harm him and some buns don’t show typical EC symptoms. You can also consult another vet to see what they say!

Vet thinks hes losing some muscle with him not wanting to be as active. he had dropped some weight from 10-1 through 11-1. he was down from 4.25 to 4.13 in that time frame. so we gave him additional food and he weighted 4.20 on the 20th(weighed before they flushed his bladder sludge so im sure it was slightly less). Yesterday he weighed 4.08, and the vet suggested additional food again. when you pet him and feel him he doesnt seem thin, so thats why she suspects muscle loss. poor guy. hopefully the EC meds will work and he will slowly gain his strength back. and i have been trying to get him to move around a bit each night and its not like he struggles to move, he just doesnt want to on his own very much. oh also his blood work was fine last time a few weeks ago.

Not that i want to get ahead of myself since its only been a couple days on the panacur, but he started eating a lot more hay, doesnt look like hes struggling to chew, and has generally looked more alert in the morning and evenings. he even went and loafed in one of his favorite spots he hasnt gone to in weeks yesterday! we have been giving him some breakfast pellets to help his weight in the morning, and before he would started to fall asleep or zone out eating them, and now they are gone in 5-10 minutes. Hes still not very active but he also hasnt been just randomly falling alseep standing up either.

I know its probably just a coincidence, but it was really nice to see him hay smash, and he had some good poops again. I didnt have to give him any CC either. now, to see how he is when i get home later

Last night seemed good. Gimly really packed on the hay hunger and had good poops again. He didnt have the difficulty chewing and even did the conveyor belt with some dill. Also didnt randomly fall asleep sitting up and was more alert all night with us. he even went and hopped off on his own twice. which he hasnt done in two weeks. once across the room by his expen and kitchen, and one lap around the christmas tree and to his hay. he really took down his breakfast pellets this morning again too. Just gotta stick with it and hope he keeps progressing. We are suppose to call the vet and give an update tomorrow, so im sure they will be pleased as well, and then we can get him more medicine.

Im cautiously optimistic. I thought it had to be just a coincidence with his slight changes being that its so early in his treatment, but he never had a day the past month where he eagerly ate this much hay or didnt do the difficulty chewing. one thing i have noticed is that there has been sporadically some white residue when he goes pee. i have seen it dried on a towel and once right after he went. i assume this is just excess calcium, because i have seen white dried before when he had a different litter setup. didnt look thick like sludge though. Now he did just have his bladder cleaned out since hes a bladder sludge bun, and his peeing habits are not quite back to normal.

Gimly update. He explored around for about an hour last night, and ate a lot of hay. This morning he explored a bit and then hopped back to his expen for hay and has been napping. Looks like he’s got a tiny bit of sludge/ calcium coming out when he pees. His peeing still isn’t back on schedule though. He’s definitely seemed so much more alert and happy. We called the vet this morning and they were happy with his progress and we will happily continue his meds

He was pleased for pets and a treat too. He looked a bit more sleepy but not as disoriented sitting with his eyes closed. still pretty alert and happy. He was active friday, but not much saturday, and active sunday, and not much monday. so maybe he will be active tonight. Im sure he doesnt have much energy yet, and we just completed the first week of Panacur. So just three more to go and two blood work ups for the guy. Hoping to see some more improvement this week now or after. i know people have said you dont usually see improvement until 2-3 weeks in, so this bump this week was really nice to see.

Just the little things like sniffing our hands to see if we have treats, or pooping a lot lol. And loafing when he naps and happy teeth grinding. im sure getting energy and strength back with take the longest, if it even happens.

Do we need to worry about him shedding the parasite via urine and re-contracting it all while hes on the medication, or right after hes finished(pending it works). Due to his lack of energy and mobility and muscle loss hes has not been able to/wanted to use his new litter box so we have towels down in his expen that if he pees on i have been washing daily every night so they stay clean.

Most cases of EC are flare ups that occur very rarely. Most bunnies contract the disease initially through the mom, but remain asymptomatic their whole lives.

Hopefully he can recover fairly well so we would have an idea if it was flaring up ever again. Id still like to know what caused it. Wonder if it started in his kidneys and that was causing his extra build up of sludge, and the fact he had urinated on himself a couple times leading up to whats going on now. thankfully and hopefully it didnt damage his kidneys horribly, as he had full work up done november 1st and his function was perfect. im sure it was a combo of his age and some stress. He doesnt ride in the car very well and in the week leading up to this he had gone to the vet, rode in the car and stayed in a different place(my inlaws, but hes been there many times), and the ride back home. two days later he was acting lethargic.

He ate slightly less hay, but after i refreshed it he got the hunger for it later in the night. He seemed alert and happy but not as active. I was trying to get him to explore around a little and he actually went into our bathroom and came back out. Then he just wanted petting. This morning when i got up he was napping with his face in his hay but got excited when i started petting him. took a bite of hay and some of his dinner green scraps. then he took down his morning pellet snack. hopefully he will come out of his expen today while we are at work. Last night started week 2 of his meds, so i know i just need to be a bit patient. i think his initial burst got me overly excited. hoping some more of his energy starts coming back this week so he can start building up some of the muscle he lost the past 6-7 weeks.

Hes still having some urinary issues, but hes gotten better about only doing it in his expen or by his hay pile on his hay mat. Its not incontinence because he postures himself to go, but sometimes its alot. and sometimes its a smaller amount. hes goes back to the vet tuesday for his bloodwork so hopefully his kidney function is still good. and im hoping he put on a little weight or maintained. im most concerned with that. hes lost weight while eating, so its muscle loss. has anyone dealt with that before? Im praying its just a result of the neuro issues caused by EC (if it is EC) and some limb weakness.

Hes still very enthused for any kind of food or treat(more than he was before the meds started) still eating a good amount of hay, poops have been pretty good, eating more of his cecals, sort of getting back to a normal peeing schedule(used to pee early morning when i got up and overnight mostly, maybe once while up during the day). Not looking as disoriented or having difficulty chewing. Seems pretty excited when he gets dinner at night, circles around in his expen as he chows, seems excited in the am when we get up, explores his expen a bit and waits for extra pellets, but the last couple days i have found him still in there when i get home. Still not being active to much on his own. i can get him to move along if i nudge him a little bit but i dont want to upset him. Still trying to be patient with the EC meds. but honestly its hard. quick question about dosage. hes getting 0.3ml every 24 hours as a 4lb bun. is that enough?

We have to be up and moving around or cleaning or playing a video game for him to willingly be active. He’s a 4.5-5 pound Holland Lop and I believe he was getting .3ml of Oxibendazole a day as well. Maybe .2ml? I’d have to check the bottle when I’m home from work, but it sounds about right.

Now i have to really be on the floor and engaged with him to move around, or nudge him over to his petting spot and then he will get comfy and loaf and teeth grind for us. he had those few days last week where he explored his pen, the tree, and the kitchen and bathroom all on his own, but now its slowed down again. hes still alert and awake though, which he was not before the meds. baby steps i suppose.

I checked Bombur’s bottle of Oxibendazole and it was actually .42ml once a day. So it was a larger dose than what Gimly has. He’s around 4.5 pounds.

Gimly has slowly regressed now back to little movement on his own and eating less hay. He’s also now when sitting, he keeps slowly moving his head to the left and he just sits there. I’m not sure what else I can do anymore.he goes back to the vet Tuesday, but after that initial burst his essentially how he was pre meds.

He actually came out and explored a bit yesterday morning after I posted. His hunger for food is still there too. We will see what bunny doctor wants to do next. He’s not even 2 weeks into his meds either.

Gimly seemed pretty ok last night. got a papaya treat and some dill that he crushed. he also seemed a bit more interested in his hay at times again. this morning my wife got up at 530 and could hear him munching away in his hay pile in his expen. she gave him a few pets and then he went right back to eating. when i got up he was still having a little bit more hay and got excited for breakfast pellet time. he also pooped a bunch more over night than the past few nights, and there was no extra cecotropes either. Im hoping when i get home he will have come out on his own again. He goes back to to the vet tomorrow for observation and his 2 week bloodwork. i might ask if we can bump his dose of panacur up from the 0.3ml since he seemed to respond well that first week, and not so much the 2nd week. if his bloodwork is ok that is. i know it can be a slow process with the meds, so im trying to maintain as best as i can. i think this next week will tell us alot if he will ever respond to treatment, as it iwill be the 3rd week of medicine.

The first time Bombur was on Oxibendazole we had to do back to back courses of the meds. So for two months straight. EC really is such an up and down illness with some bunnies and several rounds may be required. Unfortunately it’s not like antibiotics where it takes two weeks worth and they’re better in 3 days.

So he had stopped dribbling all over the place and stopped sitting in his pee. With the second course he was back to his usual litter habits and back to getting in and out of the cage on his own without help within the first or second week. He goes in and out though with his and we were back on it in another 3-4 months for more back to back rounds. So like I said, I think with some bunnies more than others it can be a bit of a roller coaster. He still has terrible vision as a result of the EC and he can sometimes still pee out of the box, so he’ll probably be on and off the meds the rest of his life. He’s almost 2, but I think when they are active it’s such a good thing and we just want to see them have so much more. I understand your frustration and I’m 100% here for you <3

Im not sure if we will get his bloodwork results back today. depends on what time they can draw it, and then it gets sent to a local lab which is actually pretty fast turnaround time. Mondays and Tuesdays are busiest at out vets office as thats when most surgical appointments are. thats why we had to board him today because they were not sure they could do it after we get out of work. normally we could just pop in for a quick 15 to do it. But i am going to check the panacur this time.

Now we are basically back at square one. So im mildly hopeful if its made right this time he will make some initial progress for us again.

The vet tech said he was a little firecracker today lol. They gave him some critical care to help with his lack of hay and he pooped a bunch. Of course I let him out of the carrier and he hops off around the Christmas tree and into the bathroom and then out behind the couch. Must be that bunny vet adrenaline ?. But still nice to see. His panacur looks much more mixed up and he gets apple banana baytril for 14 days. They said he’s not in any pain or distress, so he’s a little fighter. Like a prized fighter going 15 rounds he won’t quit. And neither will I.

Vet told us to try and give it with food, so i gave him a few greens and oats before i gave it to him last night. then he gets his panacur at 8pm. he gets a later nightime dinner with his full salad and pellets after that. when i got up i noticed he ate the majority of his greens but not pellets. he woke up and just about finished what was left of them and ate a few greens scraps before he got sleepy. i gave him his morning baytril dose so he ate before, and we gave him some additional pellets. i know it can cause upset tummy, but would he just stop eating? he did spend the day at the vet, have blood drawn, given a bunch of critical care, and was off his nap schedule yesterday. But hes uaually always chow enthusiastic.

Is he on pre or probiotics? Since it is an antibiotic( also named enrofloxacin) it could cause a gut flora shift with it.

If he is still not back to his “normal self”( before starting it) I would call the vet and see if you can do something like metaclopromide or some other antibiotic that might not make him feel so bad.

His eating just seemed a bit off schedule, but like i said, he did get down to eating this morning. i will see if there is anything left when i get home. if not i will chalk it up to bad day and off schedule. He was taking green snacks and a treat after he got home last night, so he is interested in food. He just seemed extra tired last night. He was on a round of sulfatrim about 6 weeks ago and had no side effects, so i cant imagine this upsetting his tummy too much.

One of the side effects to drugs like Panacur is low white blood cells. Which at that point my vet has just paused treatment for about a month until his white blood cells have returned to normal counts.

Thats when we gave him sulfatrim because the vet suspected a slight infection. His count came back roughly the same yesterday as it was then, so she suggested the baytril and we are going with it for now. But if he keeps having some appetite issues with it i will have him go off of it.

Poor Gimly has such a long thread and trying to keep up with it. Maybe it was the critical care that was causing him to eat less? I know when I’ve had Bombur on it he wasn’t a big fan for his pellets or greens much.

Got up this morning and he was awake and his food was gone except for some greens scraps, and he was very pleased for breakfast pellets, which we were almost gone when i left for work. i keep telling myself todays the day he perks up a little.

My vet usually advises I give Benebac at the same time to help protect the gut flora.

Whenever Bombur’s been on benebac and antibiotics together they he’s never ha any issues. Maybe he just has an issue with the baytril and they could try another antibiotic? Like how some humans have sensitivities to certain drugs, I’d assume bunnies are probably the same way.

We have to call the vet today because i suspect he somehow chipped a front tooth on the outside. i was able to see and feel it. poor guy just cant catch a break. luckily it hasnt affected his eating too much i dont think, but it needs to be looked at and addressed.

Things just dont seem to be looking good for him. we are basically done with 3 weeks of panacur and have seen no results outside of that first week. he is still eating and going to the bathroom. Hes eating has seemed to slow down but im not sure if its due to this condition or perhaps his mouth is sore. but i have been feeding some additional critical care because he wont really eat hay. he did eat some so long as i sat there and fed it to him. But hes still not moving around, still moving his head to the left, and sometimes after i get him to hop he will look tired and flop over for a bit. i think hes slowly losing more energy. Its been a struggle for us all. I will see what our vet says when we go see her tonight. Im worried that they will have to put him under to fix that tooth, and then they can can just check his molars too. im worried that he wont have the strength to wake back up. Im not ready to say goodbye to him. i’ll never be ready to say goodbye to him. He was my first bunny. my heart bunny. im absolutely heartbroken seeing him this way.

He’s got bad cataracts now and I don’t think he can see anymore. The tooth we thought broke was one of those 2nd ancillary insisors in front but she said it’s slightly dislocated but not rubbing anything. He got a 72 hour pain injection, we are going to give him metacam daily, and he’s on a med for dizziness now. We were also advised to push the critical care to keep his gut hydrated. I think we will have a better idea in the next few days of how things are going. In the meantime just going to enjoy my time with him.

They want us to supplement his diet with about 40cc of critical care daily, in addition to his normal food to get his gut more hydrated. in the past when ive given him critical care he would eat it up as i gave it. now of course he wont swallow it down until i set him down and hops a little bit. ugh. i did make it a bit more watery so maybe thats why. i’ll try it a bit thicker and see. he ate his pellets and most of his greens overnight so hes still eating on his own even though i gave him 20cc before that. he didnt poop as much overnight as he usually does but the poops were much bigger than they have been. is it possible he could just be absorbing more nutrients if he was dehydrated? otherwise if he doesnt poop much before i get home i’ll have to call the vets office. i know i shouldnt force food in if its not coming out.

If he’s eating his greens try feeding them wet so he can get some extra hydration in that way. I feel ya, I thoroughly despise giving CC to an unwilling bunny. So difficult and messy.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but have you discussed with your vet about giving Sub Q fluids at home? I had to do that with Bindi, daily, for the last 3 years due to a tongue injury that left him unable to drink well. I also did it in the pass for bunnies who were in stasis. It’s not too hard, if you are okay with needles. My husband had the vet demonstrate once and then we were able to do it at home, no problem. Can really help give an unwell, dehydrated bunny a boost sometimes.

They want to see if this helps at all during the week. they mentioned to me making it watery for extra fluid, but hes never taken water from a syringe and thinner medications. the thicker the CC and meds and he usually noshes it right from the syringe.

I will take that as a small win. He’s also pooping more tonight and peed a bunch all over the blanket, so I don’t need to worry about his bathroom usesge overnight/while at work. Hopefully he will keep taking his cc easy like this

It’s good he eats and poops and drinks. Those are all signs of a relatively healthy bunny, despite the EC. I think as long as he’s doing all that, can get excited for treats, and still wants love and attention, and can be naughty, then he’s probably not in as much pain as you think. I’ve been through the tears with Bombur enough, but at the end of the day I always smiling knowing that whenever he goes, I know I’ve done my best to give him the best life possible and make him as comfortable and loved as I can

He basically refuses to eat hay, so i know his molars are going to be bad soon. im worried about him being put under to fix that. hes been slowly losing more energy and just seems weaker to me. we are on a clock. his weight. hes still losing weight. and if we cant stabilize it with all these extra calories there wont be much more we can do for him.

He’s been out of his expen on his own everyday I’ve gotten home from work since Wednesday. I even found him in the bathroom Sunday morning?. Took him to the vet today for his blood draw and we will get results Wednesday to see if we can keep him on panacur a bit longer. His weight went up from 4.055 to 4.09 in a week on the extra cc, so we are keeping it going. He explored around for like an hour after we got home today too, so now he’s tired. Our vet is concerned that if he’s not responding well to meds he might have a brain tumor?and she’s concerned putting him under for his next teeth burr, but he needs to have it done. So we will just keep the course as long as we can☺️❤️

He’s having troubles eating possibly and his mouth gets very wet after and his chest. He’s not taking his critical care with as much gusto either. He’s slowly going downhill. I think he just wanted to make it to Christmas with us???❤️❤️. I’ll need to talk to his vet today anyways but after a very tough conversation we think it’s time to say goodbye to sweet little Gimly. You guys have been a great resource of information and support and I love you all dearly. Thank you.

But he was a great fuzzer. He had such an outgoing personality from the day we rescued him and the appetite of a 50lb dog ?I’m going to miss him so much, but he told me it’s time, and to not be sad. We did everything we could and he loves us. But it’s time for him to see his bunwife Bella again. I’m just glad we can be there with him when crosses over??????????????
