So apparently Romaine lettuce is contaminated again and my buns eat quite a bit of it as part of their diet. They have pellets once a day and unlimited hay all the time. Can I feed my buns something else in place of romaine? I know to stay away from iceberg and to only feed them small bits of kale. Is there any other leafy green I can try on them??? Thanks

I’m really getting pretty angry about this, to be candid. There’s something very wrong in the production process for romaine lettuce if we keep having these issues. My mother will probably have to throw out the spring mix she got for Panda and Fernando (who love romaine) yesterday and we’ll have to buy a different type of lettuce, maybe green leaf.

My boys love green/red leaf lettuce and butter lettuce is a favorite too.

I hardly ever buy lettuce. We get things like dandelion greens, brussel sprouts, whole carrots & beets (use the veggies, buns get greens), watercress, collard greens, some parsley and kale (limited). Whatever looks fresh and cheap when I go to store. I have a big keep fresh container that is for the rabbits. I wash the greens, put them in that, and use it up as I go. It helps them eat a variety without getting stuck in a rut and too picky.

Yes correct there is another outbreak. All romaine is to be avoided. https://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/2018/o157h7-11-18/index.html

Ditto, Joea64. I felt angry and annoyed when hearing about this today. What is going on with the Romaine production?

I just bought 2 big Romaines the other day. Hope Elara doesn’t get sick. We ate some too. Just threw them out. I wish I would have read about this earlier as I was just at the produce store and would have picked up some green or red leaf. Big snowstorm on the way so she’ll have to make due with what we have. Poor bunny….all she will have to eat is Collards, Arugula, Dandelion and Carrot Tops.

Cari, I hope you don’t mind, I edited the thread title to add “E.coli”. I just figure its another quick to make people aware and read a bit further.

I hope they get to the bottom of why this has happened again. Deregulations???

I just bought and fed my rabbits some romaine lettuce last night . . . they seem completely fine right now, but what are some symptoms to look out for in case the lettuce was bad?

                        Watery diarrhea, to my knowledge.

Serious question–are rabbits affected the same way we are? What about other veggie eating animals like guinea pigs? Most of these resources are for humans, but I’ve never seen anything definitively saying other animals should take precautions as well.

I know it’s good to be cautious, but I’d like to know for my general understanding.

Here is a little about it in regards to diarrhoea: http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_dis…tis_en.htm

Also, the bottom of page has some foods that *may* aid a rabbit that has intestinal upset. They could be good for those times they get a bit of gas discomfort. Definitely not for cases of colibacillosis. That would require hospitalisation, antibiotics, IV fluids and possibly Imodium.
