Today, at 1:20PM, I lost my rabbit Cocoa to an unknown respiratory illness.

Just yesterday, I took her and her brother (Cerise) out to play. And since I’m a student, their normal playtime is roughly around the time I come home (5:00PM). After I took them out, I gave them hay as usual and I went back to my room to check my phone that was charging. Then, my older brother calls for me in a concerning tone, and I witnessed both Cocoa and Cerise do this strange motion.

They were coughing/sneezing, it sounded wet. There was some kind of discharge coming from their mouthes and noses. With Cocoa, she was getting the worse reaction out of it and it almost looked like she was vomiting. Their “attack” was so bad, that both would even fall onto their side as they struggled to fight it. I panicked and immediately brought them to the vet.

The vet I spoke to was no rabbit specialist, but she did enough to diagnose something. Both of them had an acute upper respiratory track disease and none of us were sure what caused it. I was given something called Enrofloxacin to help and I started giving it to them just last night.

I did not sleep. I was worried sick about the both of them. Around 1AM, after I gave them critical care and their medication, Cocoa looked extremely lethargic. She was slouching, dragging her front paws and she couldn’t even go into a loaf position. Typically, she’d thump at me after I force feed her critical care but her state was so crucial that she had no energy to thump at me at all.

5AM I fed them again, then at 10AM. and after that, I was too late..

Before I found out, I heard a loud thud noise, and it turns out it was from Cerise. I had two water bowls and a big bowl of hay for them, and that hay bowl was thrown onto the opposite side of their cage. And the moment I showed up, I saw her lying there. And Cerise was hunched over, beside her. He was sadly grooming her face, and I was absolutely devastated.

Cocoa just turned 2 years old last month. I brought both my pets to the vet today after I found out about Cocoa’s death, for the vet to perform a Necropsy. Cerise is going to be hospitalized because for some reason, whatever sickness he picked up, made him drop half his body weight. His heart rate is weak, and needs special care immediately. I’m worried.

But really right now.. oh.. I can’t believe it. I really can’t..

I’m sorry for your loss. How is Cerise doing now?

I’m so sorry you lost Cocoa. She was so pretty. I hope Cerise will be ok. This sounds like some particularly nasty airway infection. Cocoa was given the appropriate antibiotic for an airway infection with lung involvement, enrofloxacine is broad-spectrum and effective against most of the bacteria that make rabbits sick. Sadly, sometimes not even the best medical care is enough.
