So last night my wife, Tony (our rabbit) and I had what could be the closest thing to a panic attack heart attack as possible.

        The Scene of the accident.

I was sitting in my movie theater chairs watching a show at around 10 pm, we just bought these chairs less than a week ago, we’ve been very pro-active trying to keep the rabbits from going underneath them since there is many mechanisms and moving parts and we were afraid they could get hurt under there, well last night our worst nightmare came true I saw Tony hop over to me and I put the legs of the chair half down I looked up to pause my show so I could stop him and also so I could go down to greet him, in the split second that I paused the show he ended up under then-chair so I went down to scoot him out Imedity I knew he was stuck.

He was stuck between 2 bars that go across the chair he had his neck left leg forward of the crush point and the rest of him behind he was really struggling and at first I wasn’t in full panic mode I tried to get him to back out by pushing his head back but it was caught just as it was in a vice, then I panicked, what felt like an eternity I had to figure out what was going on and then as we were both stuggling he went totally limp and I swear at this point he was dead I ran next door (my wifes parents live in the duplex next to us) to get my wife and her husband Rob we raced back and Tony wasnt moving Rob after a few seconds figure the chair had to go back to the down position and that would release the bars and when he did that Tony came free I put him on the couch and he was in total shock his eyes were ioen and he was just sitting there I was worried he broke his back or neck I picked him up and held him and he perked up and came aware again I set him on the ground and he moved very gingerly.  I quickly gave him some of his emergency Metacam and too him to the vet.

        The Emergency Vet

On the way to the vet Tony was aware and looking around at things acting very much how he does on car rides, We got him to the vet had a very short wait and the vet looked him and said that for our relief after checking all his leg movements head and neck movements, that he didn’t have any broken bones and that she didn’t see a need for xrays

         Since We’ve Been Back Home

Tony has been very still not moving around much we’ve given him some critical care and fluids by mouth (have been to scared to give him SubQ Fluids because we don’t want to cause any more issues with his neck  shoulder area)  as a precaution just incase the stress caused a GI Issue he has eaten a bit of Oat Hay and Carrott Tops, but we haven’t noticed any or much poop from him( Hard to tell with his Bun Wife shes a little piggy and poops everywhere) his digestive sounds are a bit quieter than normal but nothing that really worries us too much. He dosesn’t seem to be in pain he’s not squinting his eyes or grinding his teeth he’s just very still and not moving around very much.  I have noticed him cleaning his wife and doing what I would consider normal behavior other then-then the things mentioned above.

         Questions I have

        1. So if he has a bruised shoulder or bone how long is the recovery of something like that what signs or symptoms should we be aware of?

        2. Soft Tissue injury, if he bruised or hurt a muscle whats the recovery time of something like this?

        3. Whats has been your experiences with injuries with rabbits is there a symptom or something else I should be watching for? to take him back to the vet emergency today (Sunday)

        Future Plans with Tony

        1. So Monday no matter what I’m going to get him into my rabbit savvy vet to him checked out, I wish I could find a Doctor that’s as amazing as she is I’m very grateful to have such a knowledgeable and great vet like her.

So sorry he got hurt, it sounds like he did get very lucky…

I don’t have any personal knowledge on these types of injuries in bunnies, I think the fact that he is grooming his wife is a good sign, and the supportive care you are giving is a good thing.

Your normal vet will know more… such as maybe whether x-rays should be taken as a precaution. I know in humans bruised bones are very painful and take a while to heal (weeks??), so I think continued pain management would be a good idea.

As you know, rabbits hide pain very well. I think after that ordeal, I would expect him to be more quiet than normal for at least a day. If he isn’t eating his normal amount, do keep up with the critical care, and if you think he might still be in pain I would personally keep up with his metacam if you aren’t already.

          ((Vibes for Tony))
