So Milo is an 8 month old angora, I groom him at least every other day and he’s super patient. The only thing he tolerates very little is his face. I recently shaved part of his neck area cause he had some mats here and there. Today when I was petting him, I realized he has some rather tight and hard long mats across both cheeks, I don’t think he’s in any pain cause he was letting me get at them with my hands for quite some time. I don’t think I’d be able to get them out just by hand so my question is: should I try to cut them off? What about his whiskers? Does your angora or fluffy bunny get mats on his face/neck and how do you deal with it?

I don’t have any great bunny vets around but maybe worse case scenario I take him to the vet to get them trimmed?

        Thank you!!

If he’s being so tolerant about your having handled the mats, you could cut them out, I expect. You’d want to get in there daily and comb the new growth so it doesn’t mat also. You might get away with cutting lengthwise down the mat to help break it up, then be able to comb it out more rather then cut off completely. There are some special grooming tools that help break up mats too. I’d try leave the whiskers where possible.

For trimming in this area, I’d advise using rounded tip scissors.

I suppose their cheeks would be more prone to picking up hay seeds, getting wet from water bowl or bottle. Do you see him grooming he’s face often?

FluffyAngora, one of our newer members here, might have some advice. I’ve sent them a PM.
