Someone stepped on Bleu and we took him in to find out his lower jaw had been broken. He’s currently at the vet and we have a plan to go forward with his care (8 weeks with super tight sutures or wire; a few days treated as a GI stasis bunny; and forced feeding and fluids under the skin).

He won’t be home for a few hours so I’ve been cleaning the pen and splitting the kitchen since Bleu and Guinness will have to be seperated for a few days and it’s been an emotional crash. Guinness isn’t happy because she’s not allowed in ‘her’ pen (since Bleu’s going to need it) and because Bleu didn’t come home with us so she’s been looking for him. I know Bleu won’t be happy penned up either, let alone getting force fed and iv stuff, and more than a little panicked since I’ll be only one who can take care of him during the day.

I’m just, a little freaked about next few days since vet says that’s the worst for making sure Bleu doesn’t actually develop stasis. And afterwards for how to integrate Guinness and Bleu living in same space again. And other complications.

I’m so sorry to hear that. That must have been quite scary at the time. I’m glad that the repair seems to have gone well, here’s hoping that he recovers quickly and he and Guinness can resolve their differences regarding their separation in a calm manner

I’m guessing he’s on soft foods only (critical care?) for the time being until his jaw has strengthened up a little.

Bleu says thanks for the vibes! He’s taking the critical care at least (he tried eating his softened pellets and had to give up because he was too sore), so now we pray for poop.

It’s…a lot of mixed news. According to the vet, Bleu basically got the bunny injury lottery because he not only broke his jaw but he also broke it in the one spot that two rabbit dentists she consulted were like “UM. WE HAVEN’T EVER DEALT WITH THAT HONESTLY” so they wired him like a cat. Brightside, it’s apparently the “best” place a bunny could break his jaw since it’s just bone. Downsides, he’ll likely have permanent dental issues in the future . Until then, though, he’s got like, 7 meds to keep us and him busy for a while so fingers crossed he gets through jaw stuff first.

He also has to be seperated from Guinness for 2 weeks instead of a few days. Guinness isn’t happy but it’s promising she ran up to see him and has been sitting closeby him a lot through the bars. It’s jsut, a little too early for hang outs, even for supervised visits.

I’m sorry this happened. Bunnies are generally very good at bone-renewal. I’m glad he’s taking the CC, it is good stuff. Maybe add some canned plain pumpkin for extra fiber and palatability? Guiness presence will help even if they have to be separated by bars.

Goodness, at least it’s only broken in the one spot though.

@ bam: That’s an interesting idea. Will ask vet if it’s okay to give when I see her tomorrow, since Bleu’s eating the CC but I feel bad since he clearly WANTS to eat other things like his hay and pellets, he just can’t.

                              @meridiian
: It’s so hard not to let her visit! She sometimes circles the bars of the pen and follows where he’s sitting. I let her see him briefly for 15 seconds while he was dozey and she seemed confused by his scent and state but still tried giving his ears a lick.

Bleu’s pooping at least! He’s also been trying to flop but he has problems getting comfortable. Somewhat sad and amusingly, he tried flopping around the pen and couldn’t seem to keep comfy (especially since he has a neck yoke) so he ran to his litter box and flopped there into some nicely padded hay he hasn’t been able to eat

Bleu’s decided he’s tired of getting nothing but critical care every day (jokes on him, he’s still getting some)! He’s taking a valiant effort of getting down whatever hay he steal from Guinness’ rack and slowly but determinedly chewing down what he can and dropping the strands he can’t. We actually bought him some alfafa hay and lined his box with orchard since that’s softer than timothy but he’s strongly made clear he wants his timothy.

He’s also starting to get a small veggie plate now. It’s not much since he can’t completely eat it himself but cilantro leaves, shredded romaine, and parsley leaves are his favorite treat atm.

Disheartening update. Bleu got his wire stuck on his yoke and pushed the wire up in his mouth, so it’s not holding his jaw properly. We couldn’t get surgery redone right away because a storm of bad timing, from them not having a proper wire in stock to the vet who does these procedures not in till Monday. Our regular vet offered to try but she wasn’t confident she could succeed so we decided to hold off and see what the damage is and get it fixed properly, since not even emergency clinic had anyone who could do it.

However, Bleu’s still spirited and functioning on three painkillers. We got some stasis signs due to injection slowing down his gut but we’ve still got poop and he’s determined to eat his hay and veggies (and suffer through as much critical care as necessary ). The longshot hope is he didn’t misalign the bone too much if he’s okay enough to eat hay on his own, since redone procedure still pushes back his recovery time but if he’s made some progress despite that it’ll still help.

                                            Thanks, he’s certainly trying!

We took him to the vet’s for a checkup to prep for his surgery appointment and he got to run around the room for a bit while we waited. There was many, many foot flicks when he realized where we were.

Worse news. I’m not sure how to go now or how to prepare mentally…

The vet took him in for surgery but they found he had an infection in the bone, which they said could’ve been from a lot of things since the mouth’s a dirty place and infection was always a concern of this procedure. They gave us two options: finish putting the wire back in and take a culture to see if they can help him; or put him down. Even the former didn’t look good they said, as they said his quality of life would go really downhill even if procedure works.

We’re tentatively doing culture anyway but I’m now terrified for him. I was really hoping since he was fighting hard and he had so much energy and will to live that I thought he was getting better and now there’s this. I also just don’t know what to do about Guinness. She’s been with Bleu for about two years now. If we have to let go out him, I’m thinking of how she’ll take it. She’s had to watch him leave to go to the vet a few times alone but he’s always come back.

I’m just sad right now. Bleu’s too young. He would’ve been about 3 this November and now there’s this.

                                                EDIT:

We got an update from vet. There’s nothing we can do.

We’re keeping him sedated until we get there. We’ll bring Guinness with us so we can say goodbye together

Bleu’s gone now. He continued to fight to the very end. The vet had to give him three shots to help him slip away since he hung on for over an hour after the first shot. It hurt but we were told the infection was just too far and it’d basically eaten away the bone already and he likely only made it through to this far thanks to being on so many painkillers. I wish we’d had one more day with him to spoil him and tell him he was loved but knowing how much pain he was in made it feel selfish to force him on.

I don’t think Guinness fully understands he’s gone yet. She did see the body but I don’t know if she thinks he was just in a very deep sleep or what. Right now she’s eating and seems normal and is back in her pen but I don’t know how she’ll be in the following days once she realizes he’s not coming home.

I might do a proper post in Rainbow Bridge later. I don’t know. But thanks every so much for the vibes and well-wishes.
