Teddy has pretty much destroyed the base of his Ikea ‘bed’ (the standard dolls one that many bunnies have) so I’m going to pop down to our local wood supplier to get a replacement but just wanted to check what type of wooden base would be safe. On the IKEA website it simply says fibreboard – so I’m keen to know best option to go with. Thanks in advance!

Hi! Pine and cedar are very toxin to buns if ate. Aspen wood is the safest to use but I’m not sure where it’s available in long boards, I know it’s available as shavings I’m litter.

Pine as a dried wood used for building is fine to use, as long as it’s not treated. I’d go for a piece of pine over fibreboard or plywood which have harmful added chemicals to bind them together. Do you mean the thin flat piece that the bedding sits on, or do you mean the frame of the bed itself?

If you mean the bottom of the bed, it’s a bit tricky. If it’s a small rabbit, I think I’d go for thick cardboard. You could do double layers. Cardboard would be harmless, it wouldn’t last very long but it’s easy to replace and the bun has fun destroying it. The various types of board have chemicals in them. The type IKEA uses must be safe for children because Duktig is a toy and IKEA most likely doesn’t want to be sued, but I think it’d be difficult to find a child-safe one at a wood supplier? You can always ask though.

That’s a good point, and If you used two separate pieces of sturdy cardboard with the corrugations going in perpendicular directions that would make it pretty sturdy for a small rabbit.
