  One of our boys has had quite a couple of weeks with bunny boarding, being spooked in the garden, moving hutch into a new room and building work starting. He doesn’t seem to be able to relax, eats less than usual, and this evening has started making strange noises like a dog toy. Our other bun doesn’t seem too phased, though is letting us stroke him which is very out of character! We have put a plug in calming scent recommended by the pet store and I have an appointment with our vets in the morning, but I am really worried that the accumulation of stress is too much. Any recommendations for how to calm him down? The building work is going to be lasting for several months ? they don’t enjoy any human contact really, which is hard because I just want to cuddle him to make him feel better!

  Not sure thos calming scents are a great idea, I’ve heard that certain litters with strong odours can give them respiratory infections, but im not sure if it applies to this. I’d say leave them alone for a week or two and only go near them when necessary eg. cleaning feeding. And of course let them out for playtime. Give them time to recover and calm down. Im not an expert, I just know that when my bun gets stressed out interacting with her just makes it worse.

  Squeakiness could be a symptom or a respirstory infection or pasteurella (which could be stress related.) Good thing you have a vet apt.
  
  And I agree with Boo. There are really no scents that are good for bunnies. Pet stores often give uneducated advice and not everything they sell is good for bunnies.

  Thank you. The vets gave him a good check over this morning and couldn’t find any medical concerns (teeth, gut, URTI) so we are just keeping a close eye for now. The squeaking continues though…

  How is he doing now that the big changes (other than the home repair work) are over?
  is he more settled?

  He seems to be a lot more settled. No more squeaking! Neither of them are leaving the hutch at all, however much we try and tempt then out, but both are eating and drinking normally. I think they are just going to take their time to build up confidence again.

  So Glad to hear it!! and yes, just keep leaving the hutch door open when ever you want them to come out and hopefully they will get around to wanting to come out
