I found a domestic bunny covered in 50+ ticks and with a larva living in a puncture wound on its rump 2 weeks ago, she was wandering around my neighborhood in central VA for at least 10 days prior. Given that no one has claimed her and she was in terrible shape, I’m guessing she was “released” by a family (neighbors reported seeing a few domestic bunnies over the past 12 months). Seeing as no one has claimed her, I guess she’s my rescue bun.

Vet estimates she’s 8-12 weeks old, 3-4 lbs, not sure what breed she is (any ideas?: https://ibb.co/nmNdqp). We removed the ticks + the nasty larva, and she just finished up 14 days of antibiotics. She’s eating/pooping/drinking normally, and extremely affectionate (seriously, I can’t walk through the kitchen without getting licks and chin rubs). Still needs to be spayed, but past that — happy as a clam.

I started showing symptoms that were alarming similar to Lyme/Tularemia this past weekend, so my doctor put me on some antibiotics just in case I caught something from one of the ticks (I didn’t have any tick bite marks on my body as far as I could tell, but better safe than sorry). Ironically she finished up her antibiotics just as I started mine . Has anyone who has rescued a bunny caught wandering in the wild experienced similar issues or symptoms?

Are there any other known risks to humans of rescuing a domestic bunny that’s been wandering in the wild, especially one that’s covered in ticks like she was? Two of the ticks did “pop” and get blood on her fur, I cleaned it off with rubbing alcohol though. Any handling procedures I should take into account? Her cage/domain is in my kitchen (only hard flooring in my house), and while I keep my food/dining spots away from her cage, I want to make sure there aren’t any risks I’m missing here.

Any advice about proper hygiene, handling, risk factors (both for her and me), etc. would be greatly appreciated — I’m a first time pet owner.

How kind of you to take her in. It sounds like she was in a very bad way indeed. I’m afraid I can’t help you with her breed, she’s terribly cute though. Probably a mix of quite a few things in there.

As for the illness, I’m afraid I can’t be any help there. I don’t know enough about Lyme disease to comment on that, but maybe somebody else here has some experience or advice to give in that regard.

Thank you for the response @Azerane! I figured she was some sort of a beautiful mutt
