I’m ashamed to say this, but my rabbits currently live in large store bought cages. Before you attack me, I understand its bad. I want to change that.

Is there a a type of cage we could use that is cheap, doesn’t take up a lot of space, and I can easily find? o let me explain, we have these cages because my parents brought them and we don’t have much space for a cage.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Cages are not bad, in general. Some types are not ideal (ie. too small or have wire flooring with no rest area) but cages can be a good, safe habitat for a rabbit. In some homes, it’s the better option. The issue is when the rabbits are never let out of the cage so they can hop around a larger range and use all their muscles.

You might like to check out the Habitats Section of this site. Perhaps building your own “NIC” condo or converting a large dog crate would interest you?

Are you able to bunny proof a room and allow your rabbit to free roam? I’m concerned if you don’t have a lot of space, you’re not going to be able to provide an appropriate size enclosure.

Look into getting a large doggy exercise pen I got a nice big, tall one on Amazon for about $30. Whenever we visit my mom’s or sisters, the buns go there. They’re also great bc they’re collapsible and easy to transport!

I have a NIC-based two-story condo cage, custom built for me last year, augmented by a large 42″-high dog exercise pen that’s set up for overnight every evening, which has served Panda and Fernando excellently all this past year. If I should be able to get a larger apartment anytime in the near future, this will likely become a permanent, round-the-clock arrangement depending on how much floor space is available, so that I’ll need to buy a second X-pen for trips.

I have a xl dog crate… my home is quite small so I understand the lack of space… the one we have for bun is 42”. I know that this is 6” less than the preferred 48” that seems to be what the majority say a rabbit needs, but I custom built a hide house that also serves as a partial second story. I am also so glad that I purchased this size off Amazon bcz when it arrived I was shocked at just how large it actually was, especially in comparison to the available space I had in my apartment to allot to it. With all this said, BunBun is usually let out of her “Den” first thing in the morning and only goes back in for bed time. Other than that, she will be put in if we plan to be out of the home for long periods during the day. Her nickname is Miss Mischief, after all.
