We just got our first bunny today and I set his cage up for him. I could use some expertise on how to arrange it. It’s a plastic pet pen with a kids play mat as the bottom. This is what I have in there so far:

        Water and food bowls
        Hay hanger
Hideaway (Amazon box w 2 holes cut out)
        Litter box
        Chew toy balls

Is there anything that should be put close together? Anything that should be far apart? What else should I add to keep him happy and comfortable. He’s free roaming so he won’t be in there all the time, but I still want him to be comfy when he is in there. Thanks!

          Hi there, welcome

I usually like to put the water bowl as far as possible from the litter box, to prevent it from getting soiled constantly. I also like to hang the hay rack so they can only access it when sitting in their box. Most bunnies do their business while they eat hay, so this helps with litter box habits. Other than that your bun will probably “redecorate” as they see fit! My buns always toss their food bowls and toys around.

If the top of the pen is open, you might want to make sure the hideaway box is not up against the pen edge, otherwise bun might use it as a step to jump out.

Congrats on the bun! *silently mumbles* One of us..One of us..

Pay close attention to his behaviour. Some bunnies are the perfect pet: Never noisy and never messy. A lot of buns are destructo-bunnators though! They will dig and chew at everything. With the pen being plastic there is a chance he will chew through, so just keep an eye on him and the pen. Also, some buns are jumpers. My Monster does not jump out of the pen but Muffin can jump out, and this is a 70 cm tall pen I’m talking about! If you catch your bun jumping out you can hang sheets over the top of the pen and secure them with something like clamps. Usually when they see there’s a “ceiling” they won’t try to jump out.
