So I started a new job working at a CBD company, [not naming brand for privacy] and we make pet treats that people typically give to their cats and dogs with success. (I did give it to my dog for her pancreatitis with success but this is a bunny forum so I won’t go into that right now unless someone asks)

I’ve told a lot of my coworkers about my bunnies, and how they are pretty skittish, and they have all said, oh give them some CBD!

I’m a CBD advocate of course, but I am hesitant to give it to them because:

        1) I don’t think their skittishness is a big problem

        2) CBD is an oil, and normally bunnies don’t eat oil

        3) I can’t find a lot of info on peoples experiences giving it to their bunnies

Even though I don’t think my bunnies need it on a regular basis, it would be nice to be able to give it to them if they have to get their nails trimmed, or if it’s fourth of July or something. Plus since I work here and spend a lot of time volunteering with HRS, I just want to know so I can be more knowledgeable in case someone asks me.

So yeah, I already know a lot about CBD in general, and legality, and how there haven’t been clinical trials and whatnot.

I just want to know if anyone has any experience using it with their bunny for stress or arthritis etc. and if it was a success or failure.

        Thank you!!! <3

Hmm… I might be mistaken, but doesn’t CBD oil contain phenols? I’m pretty sure hemp does.

I have given CBD to my dog, for her back pain. The recommended dose was a tiny, tiny drop. She’s a German Shepherd dog and a suitable dose for a rabbit would be a fraction of what she got. (The CBD we get here is so low in THC it’s not classified as a narcotic even here, where cannabis is traditionally viewed as a very heavy and dangerous drug).

It is in an oil-base but with the minute amounts we’re discussing here, it would be less than the oil contents of one sunflower seed. Most bunnies can eat one sunflower seed without ill effects.

I think rabbits can eat rope-hemp. Hemp string and cord is considered bunny safe. It would have CBD, but practically no THC.

There was a worry that rabbits in Utah would eat medicinal hemp if it was legal to grow it commercially there. Then the rabbits would get high and cause traffic problems. But that would’ve been an effect of the THC in the hemp, not the CBD.

                  I remember that one.

I know it can help with pain, but I haven’t heard of it being given to animals for behavioral issues before. I would think in tiny amounts it could help, but I guess it would be different from rabbit to rabbit. Very interesting question for sure.

I recently spoke with a veterinarian (not an exotic specialist) about trying CBD for my partially paralyzed rabbit. She has gone down hill over the past year. I can not afford the constant acupuncture, chiropractic and laser therapy treatments that were helping her. As a result, she is “down” more than she is up. She cannot get herself upright (lost a ton of muscle mass in her back) and is having issues with urinating and defecating on herself. I was hoping to try CBD as I can only give her so much Meloxicam per day. I heard it can help with inflammation and pain, however there is not much study data on rabbits. Anyone use CBD in rabbits with success? I am planning on talking with the exotic specialist and possibly asking around at the local rabbit rescue as well. Thanks in advance!

Thank you everyone for your responses! I did try giving them a small amount, I have an oral spray for people (it has just a few ingredients) and I squirted it into a small glass and then put in about 15 pellets (they love ’em) and shook it up so they would be evenly coated.

It’s so hard to read their mood but they seemed pretty much the same, but they did drink a lot of water I think. Either way, we didn’t have any issues with it so I think so far, for my bunnies it is safe. Next time we go to the vet I will ask as well. I feel like they can benefit from it for car rides in the future.

aspen has had head tilt since last saturday,, i had her on an (old) supply of panacur & meloxicam until i got new supply from the vet on tuesday. the stable moments are becoming less and less frequent and she is doing an awful lot of rolling. I got some cbd oil for dogs and am trying this out at a tiny dose.

longhairmike, I’m very sorry to hear about aspen. I hope the CBD oil will do some good. My mum swears it does wonders for her restless legs. (Unrelated condition of course, but still a neuro issue).

I know you know lots more about rabbits than I do, but I just wanted to mention that some of our members have in recent times been given oxibendazole instead of panacur (fenbendazole) for their EC buns. Oxibendazole penetrates the blood brain barrier, fenbendazole doesn’t. Oxybendazole thus works quicker (although stilll not very quick) and more effectively. There are some risks though, specifically bone marrow suppression. I know that our member Asriel and Bombur had oxibendazole for their EC rabbit Bombur. https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/165252/Default.aspx

Here is an article where oxybendazole is suggested for treatment of EC in rabbits: http://www.mspca.org/angell_services/management-of-head-tilt-in-rabbits/

I just wanted to check back in because something kinda awesome happened.

I made myself a blend of cbd oil and jojoba oil, for my skin as a moisturizer. I put it on all over after a shower, and for the first time ever, spice actually licked my hand!!

I’m guessing it was the cbd because I use plain jojoba all the time without this result!!

It was already absorbed pretty well into my skin so I don’t think he consumed too much, he was acting normally. It was so nice to hear him purring his teeth and to finally get a little bunny kiss :’)

Sugar inspected my cbd jojoba skin on another occasion, she didn’t lick but she clucked her teeth like she was happy

Another thing I’ve come across in my research is that some people say it’s good to put CBD on a cat’s ears rather than orally. I’m assuming this is because of the blood vessels on the ears?

I know cats and bunnies aren’t the same but since cbd for bunny resources are so limited I wonder if this is a better way to give it to bunnies as well. Less risk of an upset stomach right? It could be a good method to try for bunny parents who are trying cbd

Another update: I took sugar & spice in for their annual check up (clean bill of health yay) and i asked what they thought about cbd oil for bunnies, and the vet tech said there is research that says it’s bunny safe yippee! They also have a specialist who can give dosage info available on wednesdays which is cool. They said veterinarians aren’t allowed to talk about it (in california) but vet assistants/techs can. weird

anyway, might make some bunny treats using a raw cbd oil for them just for overall wellness and anxiety

Hi! I am brand new to this forum. I was just now googling info about CBD use with rabbits and I’m so happy to found you all!

I’m so glad you’re having success with Sugar & Spice! I recently took my cats to the Vet and discussed the use of CBD oil. My vet (in VT) says that she is also not legally/professionally allowed to recommend CBD oil (yet). But we did discuss the studies being done at Cornell for dogs and CBD. And that researching your product is most important. The source of the CBD, the extraction process of the CBD oil, and the recommended dosage by weight. If the product does not provide this info, look elsewhere.

Back to bunnies. I’ve been treating my cats with CBD oil for 4 months and I have noticed great results with their anxiety and arthritis. I recently discovered a tumor on my 7 yo female doe, she’s intact and probably has a mammary tumor. We will be taking a trip to the Vet very soon for a true diagnosis (always see a vet!!). And I will be discussing CBD oil for my bunny! Hoping for the best ❤
