We got a bunny a few weeks ago and the first thing we introduced her was iceberg lettuce (and i know that rabbits shouldn’t be fed iceberg lettuce because it contains too much water) and she has been eating that ever since then i started reading some posts on here and discovered that iceberg lettuce is bad and i also noticed that my bunny is getting fatter too. So today i went to the store to get some kale because i read it’s a bunny favorite and so i got a large kale. Then when i came home i gave it to my bunny and didn’t like it and just ate the lettuce instead so im very worried. I also have to mention that when i noticed she was getting fat i told my mom and she said it was because of all the hay we give her (just a hay rack full of hay). So i have questions to see if you could help me with my situation and the answers would be much appreciated.
        1. Is my bunny getting fat of the lettuce or the hay?
        2. Should i keep giving my bunny iceberg lettuce even though she loves it?
        3. How can i make my bunny to eat kale?

(If you can’t answer all of the questions is fine i just would like some help in the first question and the last question, thank you!)

          Hi Hufflepuff Luna : )
          Welcome to the forums.
          How old is your bunny?

          To try answer your questions-
          1) What type of hay does she have? I doubt a grass hay and lettuce along would make a bunny fat. What are you noticing about her that makes her appear fat?
          2) Definitely stop with the iceberg lettuce. Have you tried romaine lettuce? That would be better.
3)Sometimes we need offer a rabbit a new food many times, before they’ll sample it and develop a taste for it. So keep offering small amount of kale, chop it up perhaps.
It’s best to introduce things in small amounts and not feed only one type of green. If she ends up liking kale, feeding only kale would not be good for her.
Check out the diet tips under the BUNNY INFO tab at the top of the page for more idea on what to give, how much and at what age.

My bunny is around 2-3 months old.
            1. She has alfalfa hay because she is still a baby and i read that alfalfa is the best for baby bunnies. And i’ve notice that her belly appears full but she eats anyways so i don’t thinks that’s anythin to worry about.
            2. I have not, i was about to but my mom said only one kind of veggie so i chose the kale to see if she like it.
            3. Okay, i’ll see what i can do
            Thank you!

I was concerned the iceberg may be making her a bit bloated. If your Mum is limiting how much greens you are allowed to buy for her, it’s okay at this stage. She’s young and you can stick with just hay and pellet diet for longer.
She may want to eat more veggies around the time she is weaned off alfalfa hay.

In the meantime, you could always ask your Mum if you can buy seeds and start growing some varieties of lettuce and herbs and other type greens.

I agree with everything Jersey says. When you do start her on veg you could perhaps plan her vegs around what your mum buys for the family’s dinner. I give my bun pieces of the vegs I like to eat myself. That way nothing gets wasted. One small bun couldn’t finish a head of kale before it wilted, if the kale is served in appropriate amounts.

Cutting up the kale could entice her to try it, the scent would be much stronger and more appetizing. But start with a small piece, always start with small amounts of new food.

She actually said that we should buy seeds and i agree with her. And about the iceberg getting her bloated, that’s what i think but she still thinks it’s the hay because i always have the hay rack full of hay for her.

I forgot to mention that she ate all the kale i left her over night (i added tiny bits of lettuce to see if she could get interested in it and some bits of cauliflower too). Now she likes kale, over the whole day i have given her tiny bits of kale and she east, she doesn’t ignore it anymote which is great! Thanks for the advice, I’ll stop with the iceberg now that we have other veggies that we can give her. Thank you lots.

Hay doesn’t make a bunny fat because it’s just a lot of fibre and bunnies poop them out within a day or two. It helps their guts move and digest. Pellets and sweet things like fruits make a bunny fat most of the time.

Seeds are also not necessary and are most of the time harmful to a bunny. Like Jersey said, bunnies as young as 2-3 months don’t need veggies, but if you absolutely want to give them, stick with small portions of fresh greens for now since she’s still so young and monitor if she gets sticky poop after eating – if she does then you may have to stop giving it altogether until she’s old enough to take it.
