I’m in the process of changing up what kind of hay I feed my Buns. For me oxbow doesn’t really work as well, being in the desert my local pet stores don’t really have the best quality, and not only that but my buns don’t really like the coarser hay. So the past week they’ve been eating the 2nd cut small pet select and they love it! They eat through it like crazy. The only problem is how expensive it can be since they eat 2x as much as the oxbow. Plus I want to get honest opinions before actually buying a huge load of it next week.

Which country are you in? US west coast, for example, can get KMS Hayloft for decent prices, while US east coast can get Sweet Meadow farms hay for equally decent prices. Both sources have great quality soft hays.

I recently abandoned Oxbow for the same reason. Quality has gone down a lot. Even the orchard grass is really stalky now.

I’m in Canada and recently ordered a half bale of orchard grass from a local farm. It seemed a nice heap of hay, but turned out to be very stalky nearer the center and full of hay moths, so we’re back to SPD 3rd cutting from Amazon (for now).

Tell us what country you’re in and members from there could give you ideas.

I guess that would’ve been important lol, I’m from the US west coast. Does the hayloft have pretty good quality?

Yes! And when there’s a bad harvest, they give a heads up on their site.

American Pet Diner Timothy Gold is a second cutting of Timothy that is always soft and not stalky. My rabbits like it a lot. I get mine from Drs. Foster and Smith. They have free shipping when you buy $19 or more of merchandise. They have a 24 oz. bag and a 5 lb bag. Occasionally, they have free shipping with any amount. If you get on their newsletter list, you’ll get an announcement when that happens. You could then try out the 24 oz. bag and see if your bunnies like it.

They sell APD Timothy Gold in the BB store here, but it’s more expensive. I used to see it at  my local Petco too, but they stopped carrying it when they recently started carrying Oxbow hay.

Q8bunny – I’m in Canada too – Could you specify what you mean by SPD 3rd Cutting so I can search for it on Amazon?
I have also been not as impressed with Oxbow – the last bag had tones of bundles of thin dried out dark brown hay stuff in it and my bunnys wont touch it. At $26 a bag its frustrating.

Small Pet Select (the D was a typo)

They have first cutting (very crunchy, lots of stalk), second cutting (a balance of stalk and soft leaf), and third cutting (mostly leaf, very soft). My bun prefers leaf, so he gets 3rd cutting.

I have always had to get Rabbit Hole Hay, Second Cut Timothy since that seemed to be the only hay Bun would eat. However, it is expensive and the consistency in quality has gone progressively down hill… the last box I recieved, they shld have been ashamed of… so I am, once again, trying to switch over to other brands. At this time, Small Pet Select seems to be an almost doable option, as she will eat it a bit… but not the same active munching as Rabbit Hole… I have also happily seen that she is a bit willing to eat the Oxbow Timothy Hay Stacks, this surprised me big time bcz she wouldn’t even look in any Oxbow hays direction months ago.

I am wondering if all the US grown west coast hays are really all showing a decline due to the weather and is this a sign of things to see all the time.

I forgot to mention, the Small Pet Select seems to be the only hay so far that comes with no brown in it… although it isn’t as leafy as Rabbit Hole Hay… but I rather have a bit more stalks and tops than leaves and still have green fresh smelling hay than have a ton of leaves and have half the box be brown, dust or both
