Around midday today, I noticed iris wasn’t eating and seemed to be less active than usual. She was pressing her sromach against the floor and refused to get up and walk. I was not able to take her to the vet until 6:00, when all the rabbit savvy vet offices were closed and my only option was an emergency clinic. The vet helping iris knew very little about rabbits and didn’t know what GI stasis was until she checked a book of hers. She gave iris fluids and pain medication and said it should help, but hours later iris has still not eaten or used the restroom. The worst part is that my mother won’t let me take iris to a rabbit savvy vet in the morning because the emergency visit was so expensive. What can I do to help her? I’m so scared, I don’t want to lose my baby.

          Hi

so unfortunately you will need to take her to a rabbit savvy vet. They will need to make sure there is no blockage. It’s good she got pain meds and fluids but she needs to be force fed with oxbow critical care with a syringe and she also needs baby gas drops to help break up any gas bubbles she may have. What pain med did she give, and how much fluids? Did the vet say she had any gut sounds? A complete shut down is serious.

Offer her all of her favorite treats and all veggies, escpecialy safe herbs like basil and mint to get her wanting to eat. If you don’t have critical care, wet pellets and put into a syringe-sometimes you can buy them at grocery stores in baby isles but you might need a wide tip for the pellets to pass through. Make sure you keep her warm and massage her belly too.

Bunnies are very expensive to take care of when they are sick. You can see if the vet will offer a payment plan or if they offer credit cards like care credit that let you pay the amount over a couple of months, but since a non rabbit savvy vet saw her, a rabbit savvy vet will need to see her because they know exactly how everything should feel and sound and the vet you saw may have missed important things.

I found an old bag of critical care in the cabinet and gave her 2 syringe fulls, she refuses to take anymore. She is drinking normally but has yet to eat anything. I believe they gave her medicam, and I’m not quite sure how much fluid. The vet said she didn’t detect any blockages or stomach noises and said the x-rays looked pretty much normal. But that still doesn’t explain why she won’t eat. I will tak to her about getting to a rabbit savvy vet, but she will need a lot of convincing.

Well I’m glad nothing showed up on the X-rays. Make sure to not feed expired cc or it can make them sick, use mashed up wet pellets if you can instead.

But she still needs to go, tell her that if she doesn’t take you that your bun could have a slow and painful death. See if you can borrow money from people if you have to.

Don’t stress her out by pushing the force feed on her. The feed alone in a couple of hours could start her tract moving again but just monitor her every couple of hours and see how she is doing but try not to handle her too much besides the feeding, medication and tummy massages.

              Good luck with your baby

Good news, I woke up to check on her, to see that she had eaten all her lettuce and some of her hay I was able to work out a way to get her to a better vet in the morning so hopefully we can get her back to normal asap! She has yet to use the restroom, but is definitely acting more of her spunky self than the slumped tired bunny I was seeing hours ago. Thanks so much for your help!

It’s great that she’s voluntarily eaten hay! It sounds like the emergency vet did all the right things. X ray to check for a blockage, pain killers and fluids are a pretty standard treatment (although lots of vets will wait on the X-ray! That’s probably what made it expensive). Some vets may give zantac too.

You can also give her Simethicone at home, which is sold as baby gas drops. If she has gas that’s making her uncomfortable, it will help and may encourage her to poop. It won’t do her any harm if she doesn’t have gas, and it won’t affect any of the other medicines You can give her 0.5ml of it, once an hour for up to 3 hours.

BH, while critical care that’s been mixed with water can go off and be dangerous, if it’s in a packet and hasn’t been mixed with water yet, it won’t do any harm. It’s definitely better to give slightly out of date CC than nothing.

S&L, that’s why I mentioned mashing up pellets as it still gives the fiber. I know my buns get sick if I feed them out of date cc that’s why I mentioned it.

The second vet visit went very well, and they didn’t even charge for the visit! The vet looked her over and concluded there’s not much more that can be done, and she should get better from here on out. She’s doing better now, back to herself. She is eating hay and greens voluntarily but wouldn’t accept any berries or watermelon. She is pooping although it is a bit smaller than usual. I am closely monitoring her food/water intake and bowel movements, as well as her behavior, in case any more issues surface. Thank you for your help!
