Hi Y’all!!! I have stopped at Binky Bunny soooo many times for info! It’s been a long time since I owned a bunny and have been using this site as a refresher course! We will become proud owners of our 2nd adopted bunny next week. Our current adopted bunny will hopefully find a bun friend he can bond with. Our back story with Rico is kind of a misadventure with a happy ending. I’ll recap on the past 8 months for us if anyone is interested.

In September, after hurricane Irma hit us, my mother found 3 destroyed metal cages outside that were fit for a hamster. She searched all over to see if she could find any animals. She came upon one bunny. Underweight, dehydrated and terrified. Couldn’t find the other 2. ? she did all she could to make this bunny comfy and called me in a panic. She knew I would instantly take the bunny in and give it a happy home. She searched for a couple weeks to see if anyone was searching. We imagined that if you were the kind of person to leave your pets locked in a tiny rusted cage outdoors during a cat 3-5 hurricane you probably weren’t searching for them. Upon meeting the bunny I knew it’d be a lot of work. It was incredibly intimidated, shaking and fighting to hide but the good news was, the bunny seemed quite young. I attempted to identify gender and concluded it was prob a girl without being to invasive. We named her Irma. For 8 month my family and I have been doing all we could to bond with this bunny and brought it back to good health. The progress has required major patience but baby steps were def being made. Health wise = amazing! Free roaming and litter trained with zero issues! Which I found amazing considering it was caged and unkempt. Last week we decided to bunny date and meet a possible forever friend that Irma could bond with. The night prior to our meeting Irma had finally bonded with me. She let me pet, hold and kiss her for the first time without fighting! I have a feeling the carry cage I set up brought the fear of god into her! Haha! As we were waiting in the car to meet with the bunny rescue I took a quick look back at the kids and the bunny. She was licking herself and with shock i said, “OH MY! I’m pretty positive Irma is a boy guys!” The kids asked me how I could tell. I didn’t get to far into details. At the rescue we confirmed she was a he and within an hour I was at the clinic getting “cane” (new name) neutered. We also determined the bunny was around a year and a half. The surgery went well and Irma’s had about 10 names since we found out she was a he. I think we’ve settled on Rico in regards to Puerto Rico being shocked by Irma. It felt fitting. So now we’re on day 5 post surgery. In 7 more days we will try again at the rescue to see if he will find his forever bun pal! Wish ya luck!!!

Thanks for reading our story and I’m hoping to get to know quite a few of you as our new journey begins with a 2nd bunny in our home! We are very excited!

Hi And a big welcome to you and your family and Rico!!!! What a great story and a lucky boy. Such a shame about the other two bunnies let’s hope they found loving homes too.
It will take a couple of months for his hormones to calm down. If you’re beginning the bonding make sure you go through a good pre-bonding process and the time that is over with he should be ready to have a friend.
How exciting!! Please keep us up-to-date please and photos photos photos

Thank you all!!! He’s an amazing bunny and I’m so glad we’ve given him the home he deserves! He’s such a playful little guy and the rescue I’m working with is amazing so I know they will be helpful during the bonding process. I love suggestion and sources for info though so please feel free to share away!
