Hello, I was wondering if anyone here has had a rabbit recover from SERIOUS sludge issues?
I knew my older rabbit (mini lol, Cleo, approx 11+ years old) had some bladder sludge because it was seen in an X-ray she got about 6 months-1 year ago. She had a UTI AT THE TIME THAT SHE RECOVERED FROM, and also received fluids. Well I noticed Monday night she didn’t want her dinner so I gave her some buprenex and took her to the vet the following morning. She got a shot of penicillin for UTI, and more sub q fluids because she had sludge and muck stuck all over her behind. Since Monday night she has passed clump after clump of sludge I’m honestly shocked by the amount. If I stuck it all together it would have to be approaching the total volume of a golf ball. How big are rabbit bladders? How much more can come out? I’m giving metacam and buprenex and she’s still eating greens on her own but nothing else. She stopped pooping for 3.5 days but has started pooping again as of this morning, and I’m also syringing water and a little critical care, plus metaclopramide (I only did this last night). She’s also mobility compromised due to ecuniculi infection many years ago when she was young. She’s still eating greens on her own, but being very picky about which ones. I feel like I’m torturing her. Will this sludge clear out? I’d rather euthanize her than have her go through the agony of passing so much sludge every day. Advice?

I only have second hand info about thick sludge, but a Facebook friend of mine had a bunny that passed ample amounts of really thick sludge. It did clear up. The rabbit was about 4 at the time, and age does matter, so the prognosis is not as good for an 11 + years old bun, but that’s rather natural.

Try to encourage water intake. A little bit of cranberry juice (preferably unsweetened) can help acidify the urine. Some buns will drink more if you add a bit of unsweetened apple juice to their water. Always serve plain water as well, some buns won’t drink at all if their water tastes funny.

Here’s a bit of Medirabbit info about bladder stones and sludge in rabbits:

Just wanted to update in case it helps someone else. Cleo is back to herself again. She’s eating, has regained her mobility and passing stools. It was a rough week for sure, she passed SO MUCH sludge, and in total it took about 5 -6 days from the first day I noticed something was wrong until she was better. So if it happens to someone else, there’s hope in some cases. She received/ was treated with: a penicillin injection, sub q fluids, metaxam and buprenex, simethicon, critical care/ water in a syringe as needed.

Also, the sludge was thick…. thicker than toothpaste i would say.

Thank you for the update! This is very helpful for other members and readers of the forums!

I’m so relieved to hear she’s back to herself again.
