anyone have specific recommendations for vets in the dallas/ fort worth area?

I posted a thread a while ago about my rabbit choking, and i found this link while researching

that is **EXACTLY** SPOT ON **exactly** what happens to my rabbit. saliva can be anywhere from clear, green, green with specks of hay etc. I am pretty sure that the vet i go to should consider that dental issues may be a huge factor. my rabbit got 2 teeth trimmings each appointment i went to (aka in the past 3 months from today) but she had another episode again last night, and 1 a few weeks ago (after the 2teeth trimmings). she acts totally normal when it’s all over, and she snaps out of it more quickly if i do the bunny heimlich than if i dont do anything except wipe her saliva.

i wasn’t told of any other dental issues besides the molar spurs, but then again im not sure if my vet considered the options that i read in the article as were considering many other things as well. I currently see Dr. Effie in City Vet in dallas – i know she is highly recommended across the board for rabbits, and i agree she is an amazing vet and  i have been going to her for years. but she is always so busy, and ive already been twice with no real diagnosis. 

is there anyone on here who has a specific rabbit vet they see that is very personal and extremely rabbit savvy and would totally recommend? in the DFW area of texas*. should i see another vet – if so who do you recommend? or should I continue staying with dr effie?

I know I live in College Station (A&M vet teaching school) and I go to them, they are amazing! I know its a far drive for you but if you need a real savvy bunny doctor they are the ones, and they are so inexpensive( other vets I been to charge 2x more).

If you are okay with the drive, I highly recommend them

It’s actually funny you mention that, I am actually going there in the beginning of June after being referred by this new vet i went to today – who did not know what was wrong with mabel at all or even try to diagnose her….

So you’ve had really good experiences with Texas A&M? I have to admit I was a little… skeptical cause these are students and I know they have a real doctor watching over them… but still LOL. I do like the fact that they have many specialists on site which is what I feel like is needed now

Hi lifeasweknowit – Jerseygirl emailed me concerning helping you find a vet. Dr. Effie is excellent but I agree that office is always so busy. I have used her in the past and she knows her stuff.

However, I am currently using Dr. Erin Tate at another Cityvet location (Preston Hollow) and i have been using her for many many years for my rabbits. She currently see’s my rabbit, Bobby who is approximately 10 years old and get’s regular dental trims around every 3 months. I know I was concerned too but they have resident doctors (Ones who have been a doctor for a couple of years) and then they have the senior clinicians that the residents talk to about each case. The student doctors basically just shadow the vets and they are on two week rotations so they get a lot of experience. My lop is getting her teeth trimmed once again there. They are so great, I love Blair and Griff

Sarita, thank you so much – I will definitely need to check out Erin Tate… seeing as how 2 vets could not diagnose my rabbit I have decided to take the referral and get my rabbit a CT scan or whatever else is necessary. I will definitely reach out if I have questions but i appreciate and will most definitely remember the recommendation!

Bunny house, thank you so much! is it like.. an actual professional looking institute? or like a glorified vet office? because the way the new vet i saw today described it… was… they had all these specialists and machines capable of doing a lot of diagnostics and the specialists to properly read the tests to see if theres anything wrong etc. instead of a vet who kind of dabbles in everything – if that makes sense.? just wondering what to expect and if it is worth the effort to go for both me and my rabbit!

lifeasweknowit, Oh my gosh it is the nicest, most professional office I have been to, since the Vet School owns it, they want it to be nice and they don’t have doctors that are rude(like most all vets Ive gone to). Like most vets, you take a X-ray or something and other items and it can take days to send off and get results, but here, they do it the same day, so I mean personally, I won’t go to any other vets because I have finally found these that actually care about my buns and not about the money(as they are way cheaper than other vets, but very good quality).

Well in my experience, it is better to have a specialized who knows 100% about a species than a vet who knows 50% of each species as it is too difficult to keep up with all the new knowledge of each species. From my experience, it is hard to find a vet that dabbles in everything. Did I understand your question right?

They are always up todate on new procedures and new ways of treating. I mean yes, they do have amazing technology that helps diagnose what is wrong ( my baby has had many CT’s to see the status of her abscess). I am a different kind of patient, I like them to tell me all about her illnesses and then we go into detail on treatments and different kinds (medicine or surgery) to fix her issues, we even think outside of the box and they are always so willing to do what the patient wants to do if it will have a good outcome ( I am kind of pushy but its lead Caramel to where she is now).

I would honestly recommend you to get an appointment at least one time to get to see the exotic doctors and talk with them! And you know, buns develop illnesses quickly and sometimes without a cause that can be determined, but they have saved Caramel from being euthanized when many other vets said that she will just die because they didn’t wanna do anything about it. It wouldn’t hurt to get an appointment, you might be surprised by what you find and let me know if you do go see them! I would love to hear what you thought about them!
