We took him in at 0830 on Thursday but he had a wee complication where once he came round, his blood pressure sky rocketed and he bled through the ligatures. The vet put him under again and tightened them. He’s got various medications to take (but the vet administered them and he was dosed up enough for the evening – baytril, metacam, emeprid and something else that i’ve forgotten the name of!) We took him home at 1845 and he seemed OK – took a while to get going but he eventually started eating some greens, hopping, flopping. Not a great deal of poop though (and what I saw seemed cecal).

He had to go in for a scheduled check up this morning at 0830 – When she weighed him this morning, he’d lost 0.02kg since yesterday – the vet wasn’t worried about this though…in fact, she thought that could just be “testicle weight”
I called the vet this afternoon and they said he’s doing alright but is refusing the Critical Care (who wouldn’t, it’s nasty!) but he’s eating his salad. The problem is that he hasn’t pooped yet. So they want us to take him home tonight but bring him back again in the morning for hopefully a final check up.

I’m not sure what to make of it to be honest; is there a chance that he’ll be more likely to poop in his own home? I’m obviously worried about stasis (and I assume the vet is too and that’s why she wants him in again tomorrow). I figure that 2 lots of anaesthetic in the 1 day is probably a lot for the wee guy and it’ll just take a wee bit longer to bounce back.

Sounds like the little guy had a tough time! It’s great he came round so well and is eating though. It’s not super unusual for bunnies to take a while to poop after a neuter, so don’t be too concerned.

I’m not sure what they mean by refusing critical care though – most vets should be experienced in force-feeding critical care – when most bunnies need it, they don’t WANT it, but it’s important. However, if he’s eating salad by himself that’s great. As long as he’s eating something, then hopefully he won’t go into full stasis.

Some rabbits are more comfortable at home, some do better (fight less) if they’re being force fed by strangers, Since the vet is advising you to take him home and bring him back, perhaps they don’t have anyone to monitor him there overnight. I would take him home, keep a close eye on him, and fingers crossed you’ll see poop soon!

Completely agree with S&L. Critical Care comes in two flavors, the original and apple/banana. Not surprisingly, the apple/banana is more popular with bunnies. So try to get that one if you’re buying CC. It’s good to have CC at home, an opened sachet can be kept in the freezer for longer shelf life.

If you don’t have CC you can syringe feed pellet mush, but seeing that he is eating, hopefully it won’t come to that. It’s actually not a thoroughly bad thing if a bun puts up a fight when being syringe fed. It’s impractical for the human, but it means the bun is strong and has fighting spirit.

Many buns do feel better in their home environment, but as S&L also says, they might want you to take him home because they don’t have overnight staff at the clinic.

You can help his tummy with a little bit of massage like in this video: http://youtu.be/JnuxGLa2reg

We picked him up a couple of hours ago….all day while at the vet all they got from him was 4 measley poops. He’s in the door 25 minutes and I have counted (yes, counted) 39 poops!

“What did you do with your Friday night?”…”I counted rabbit poop!” ?

He’s eating like a champ and flopping in his house. So relieved!
