        Hi Everyone

Yesterday we had our beloved Nugget neutered and he passed during the operation. Nugget was 6 months old, perfectly healthy boy. He weighed 3kg, Lop x Rex bunny. The vet did a quick check prior to the surgery (weighed him and listened to his heart) and said he should be fine. We weren’t offered any pre blood tests or scans. There is only one veterinary clinic in our area so I couldn’t choose where to go. I have owned many rabbits before and never had them desexed. Nugget was our baby and I was quite concerned about him being neutered but the vet had previously said it was the right thing to do. They had finished the surgery when his heart slowed and then stopped, they gave him adrenaline, he came back and then crashed again. I just need to know if this is common? I am so devastated by this and unsure why this happened to him.

        Thank you

I’m not 100% sure on what could have been wrong with him, I think sometimes it’s sadly just one of those things that happens!
Either way, I’m so so sorry for your loss <3 <3 xxxxx

I’m very sorry for your loss. This is not common, but it does happen. It can happen to humans too with simple, routine surgery. There’s no guarantee that pre-surgical blood work would have shown anything.

It’s very sad though. The vast majority of buns cope with modern day anesthesia without a problem, but that’s of course of little comfort to you. But it does mean you didn’t do anything wrong by opting for the surgery.

On the Internet, there are comparatively many stories about spay/neuters gone bad, but you have to keep in mind that when a neuter goes according to plan, people rarely feel the need to come to a forum and write about it.

I can understand the frustration and grief. I believe you were doing the right thing having him neutered. Like bam said, the vast majority cope fine. It’s a pretty routine surgery. Such a very unfortunate circumstance. Sorry again.

I am so sorry you lost Nugget this way. This is really heartbreaking.

You thought you were doing the best thing for him.  And you were – of course!

As others have said, this is rare but it does happen. And when it does under these circumstances,  it is always deeply tragic.

                I feel for you. xxx

OH No!! I am SO Sorry for your loss!!

I am going to be having my bunny neauterd soon – he is 7 months old, but he “boys” haven’t dropped yet. When I asked my vet what her success rate was she said out of all of the spay’s and neuters she done she has only ever lost one boy.

She said that nothing came up in the physical or when she listed to his heart. – she told me that they did an autopsy after and found out that he had a heart condition, a murmur that was so small that that they couldn’t even hear it with a stethoscope.
Sadly these things do happen – but not that often.

Sending so much hugs your way!!
