I want my little baby bun to be my ESA(emotional support animal) what training would he need that I can do myself? What requirements does he need to meet. I have MDD(major depressive disorder)  and my bun has helped a lot and kept me from suicide. Its been rough and I want to get him certificated. What do I need to do? I have talked to my therapist and psychiatrist and they have given me a note for the okay as dezzie as a ESA but what training can I do to make him a better ESA?

        Love,

        Desmond and Kiiara

Legally speaking, all you need is that note (and once a year it needs to be updated) Training is really only needed if you plan to leave the house with your bun. Training would be making sure your rabbit is harness trained (to ensure safety while youre holding them), making sure they dont become stressed when in crowds, training out any aggression (sadly, nips count as aggression even though rabbits use it as a way to communicate).

As Mikey said, all you need for an animal to be classified as an emotional support animal is a note from a medical professional (therapist, psychologist, etc.). My Cinnabun is an ESA. I’m in college currently and my dormitory does not allow pets, but since Cinnabun is an ESA, I am allowed to have her.

ESAs do not require any type of training. There is a big difference between ESAs and service animals. Emotional support animals provide support and comfort via their presence, which service animals, on the other hand, are able to perform specific tasks. I believe in the United States, only dogs (and some miniature horses – maybe?) are recognized as service animals under titles II and III of the ADA. Are you trying to bring your bun with you when you go out?

You can bring an ESA with you and most of the time places will be ok with it as long as its not disrupting anyone. ESAs can be kicked out of public places though, where as service animals (dogs and mini horses with special training) cannot be kicked out without major backlash and likely legal action. Ive brought my Blue and my Badger many places with me and have never been kicked out ESAs are only protected for living conditions and plane rides, so if youre traveling by plane, your rabbit is allowed with you. Likewise, if you move to a place with a “no pets” rule, or stay at a hotel with a “no pets” rule, your bunny is still allowed with you. Youll need a copy of your letter with you as proof.
