I want to upgrade my bunny’s housing. I would love to build a grid condo with wood levels then add her x-pen on it. However, due to room dimensions it need to have it fit in a 40 inch wide niche. All the Wire grids is find are 14×14, so three equals 42, two inches too big. 13 would be perfect, total 39 inches, but I can’t find them. I don’t want to go as small as 24. Do you think I can somehow overlap the grids? I considered using x-pen panels, but they are all 24 or 26 wide, so similar size issue. Suggestions?

Yes you can certainly overlap the grids I’ve not done it but have seen plenty of people who have.

These are pretty expensive, so I’m not sure what you’re looking to spend, but here is an ex pen with 36″ wide panels! (Precision Pet Products Courtyard Kennel Exercise Pen, 38″H).

If possible, I’d recommend using an ex pen instead of overlapped NIC grids because the grids don’t overlap into one smooth surface, and it’s a hassle to zip tie all of them together. Not to mention the pain of cutting the zip ties if you realize you messed up!

I had the same problem as you, but in reverse—I needed a 24″W condo, but the only grids I could find in stores were 14″. I initially went with the grids, but half way through building the walls, decided on the ex pen  The grids come in handy for many other purposes, too, so they weren’t a complete waste. I’ve attached two pictures if you would like ideas!

You can overlap the grids, but I have to agree that xpens are less expensive and much easier to manage. I have both a complete xpen setup and a NIC condo with an cpen “patio”, and the xpen setup is so much easier to clean. Kieko’s NIC grid condo is 4 grids wide, 4 grids tall, and 2 grids deep, with literally over 500 zip ties and two wooden levels plus wooden base, and casters underneath.

I overlapped grids in an old guinea pig cage I had and it worked just fine. Doesn’t look as clean as it could, but worked well.

I’d love to use the X-pen. I’m still in my planning stages. I have an X-pen set up clipped to a three level wood/NIC grid condo I bought used. It’s OK,, but they put screening on the outside of the grids and stuff gets stuck there. I could tear the screening off, but it’s just a little smaller than the area and I need to make sure she doesn’t get back behind, there is a 2×3 area of rug missing already. I could just put down a plywood base. Plus the Xpen can get “rearranged” by the battering ram that is my Basset Hound when he decides the bunny’s piece of banana or parsley looks yummy. I should probably post pics (if I can figure out how) and get suggestions on how to improve the setup.

                  Thanks for the ideas!
