My little bunny Milly is very inconsistent with her poops. Sometimes they’re very large, egg shaped and occasionally strung together with hair; other times they’re a normal size and nice and round. Her poops have been like this since she’s been an adult bunny (she’s 18 months old now)  and i’ve never thought too much of it as she is a chunky bunny (3.2kg Mini Lop), she has regular vet checks and she’s always so playful and eats everything.

Last week though she got very ill. I’m used to dealing with ill bunnies as her brother Theo is prone to GI stasis but it’s unusual for her; she has once had a blockage back in February which we dealt with, but then on Tuesday she had what I thought at the time was GI stasis. I called the emergency vet number straight away and they ran through the medication I have at home for them (Metcam, Metoclopromide, Ranitidine, Cispride) and the vet said there was little point in bringing her in as asides from giving her fluids there was little else the vet can do that we couldn’t. The vet said to give the medication immediately, tummy rubs, hot waterbottle, critical care feeds etc. and to call them if I felt she deteriorated a lot. After giving the medication I spent hours sat with her giving her tummy rubs, but her tummy felt huge and so swollen. I could see her heart going very quickly even for a bunny. She was shuffling around clearly in a lot of a pain, but weirdly of GI stasis she was still pooping. Every half hour would be a nice round good sized poop. She even got up and did a little wee on her blanket. Anyway by 11.30pm (this all started at 7pm) she just got up wandered around, started to eat food and played with her brother – basically acted completely normally. She’s been fine character wise ever since but i’m now so nervous of these odd large egg shaped poos she’s doing and am wondering if there’s some underlying problem? I think she might have had bloat that evening rather than GI stasis?

I am taking her to the vet when I can get an appointment (Probably next weekend) and will of course be asking their advice (they are rabbit specialists) but in the meantime I wondered if anyone here might have some idea of what’s going on?

Her diet is 20g of pellets morning and evening, no veg due to Theo’s tummy troubles, unlimited high quality timothy hay and of course unlimited water. She and her brother are brushed daily to minimise the amount of ingested hair.

I’ve attached a photo of her latest concerning poop incase it helps anyone give me advice.

That is a string of pearl poop, which is a result of too much fur consumption through grooming. How often do you groom your rabbit? When rabbits groom, they ingest their fur. A little bit is harmless, but if they eat too much (molting season) it can block them up and cause conditions like GI stasis.

Feeding a bit of pineapple once a day will help get the fur through. Continue encouraging water consumption and hay consumption as you can.

I find that changing Luna’s water bowl more often helps as well because the fur always finds its way into the bowl.
